Legendary trainer D Wayne Lukas dead aged 89 as grieving family say he's now at peace ‘reunited with late son'

LEGENDARY horse trainer D Wayne Lukas has died aged 89.
His grieving family say the iconic handler is now 'at peace' and reunited with his beloved late son.

Lukas, who passed away surrounded by loved ones in Kentucky, was rushed to hospital last week with a 'worsening' serious illness.
He refused all treatment because he wanted to spend his final days at home.
A statement from his family read: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather, D. Wayne Lukas, who left this world peacefully on Saturday evening at the age of 89, surrounded by family.
"Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry – developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner's circle.
"Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport.
"His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.
"As we grieve at his passing, we find peace in knowing he is now reunited with his beloved son, Jeff, whose memory he carried in his heart always."
Jeff suffered horrendous injuries when trying to stop a loose colt at Santa Anita in December 1993.
The horse smashed into him, shattered his skull and left him in a coma for several weeks, resulting in permanent brain damage.
Although he showed enough signs of recovery to work again, it was short lived.
Jeff, who was his dad's best mate and favourite assistant trainer over the years, passed away aged 58 in March 2016.

Orioles' Zach Eflin returns to IL; Brandon Young recalled

July 1 - For the second time this season, Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Zach Eflin has been placed on the injured list. The Orioles recalled right-hander Brandon Young, and, according to reports, he will start Tuesday's game at Texas. The scheduled starter, Charlie Morton, has been pushed back to Friday at Atlanta. Eflin was removed after one inning of work vs. the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday due to lower back tightness, and his IL designation is listed as "lower back discomfort." The veteran right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and a long home run to Jonathan Aranda while throwing 28 pitches. He did not return for the second inning in an 11-3 Rays victory. After a pair of solid starts to open the season, Eflin went to the IL with a low-grade lat strain on April 9. He returned on May 11 and got the win in a 7-3 victory at the Los Angeles Angels. His ERA stood at 3.13 at that point. Eflin has made eight starts since and his ERA has ballooned to 5.95. He has struggled terribly in last three appearances, allowing 17 earned runs on 27 hits and six home runs in nine innings of work. Eflin is a pending free agent after the 2025 season. Young (0-2, 7.11 ERA) was most recently recalled on June 25 and started vs. the Rangers in Baltimore that evening. He allowed four earned runs in four innings, including a three-run home run by Josh Jung. He was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after the game, but will not face Texas twice in the span of seven days. --Field Level Media

Report: D Evan Bouchard signs four-year deal with Oilers

July 1 - The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed Evan Bouchard, locking up one of the league's most versatile defensemen for four years, multiple reports said Monday. TSN reported the contact extension is valued at $42 million. Bouchard, 25, debuted with the Oilers in 2018-19, but has become a mainstay over the past four seasons. He has played in 326 of a possible 328 regular-season games and recorded 52 goals and 180 assists in that span. In the 2023-24 season, he totaled 82 points in 81 games played (18 goals, 64 helpers). The 2018 first-round selection has been a key figure in Edmonton's dynamic offense and back-to-back Western Conference titles. He has a blistering right-handed shot and amassed seven goals and 23 points during the Oilers' playoff run in 2024-25 after 32 points in 25 playoff games the year before. Additionally, Edmonton re-signed forward Kasperi Kapanen to a one-year deal worth $1.3 million, according to reports. The Oilers picked up the veteran of three other NHL teams after St. Louis released him 10 games into the 2024-25 season. He provided a spark in the playoffs, scoring three goals in 12 games, including the overtime game-winner in Game 5 vs. Vegas to propel Edmonton into the Western Conference finals. He added two goals in that series vs. the Dallas Stars. --Field Level Media
