Andhra CM Naidu seeks Rs 150 crore from Centre to buy 20 million kg of HD Burley tobacco
The Chief Minister specifically requested Rs 150 crore from the Tobacco Board to facilitate tobacco procurement, noting that the State is spending Rs 300 crore to purchase 20 million kg of HD Burley tobacco due to slump in market prices.
He urged the Tobacco Board to cover half of this expenditure to ease the State's financial burden, and support tobacco farmers.
Naidu highlighted that seven procurement centres have been set up in Bapatla, Guntur, Palnadu and Prakasam districts to streamline the tobacco purchases. He also proposed amending laws to regulate tobacco production, and marketing through the Tobacco Board.
The Chief Minister raised concern over the 10% import duty on palm oil, which has lowered prices, and hurt Andhra Pradesh's oil palm farmers. He urged Goyal to reconsider this decision, emphasising its conflict with the National Mission on Edible Oils' goals, and its adverse impact on farmers' incomes.

Tamil Nadu sanctions record payout of Rs 1,137 crore to settle transport staff dues
CHENNAI: In the largest one-time sanction for the transport sector in recent years, the Tamil Nadu govt on Monday released Rs 1,137.97 crore to settle long-pending terminal benefits of retired, voluntarily retired and deceased employees of all State Transport Undertakings (STUs). According to the order, the sanctioned sum will be distributed across the eight transport corporations including Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Rs 157.81 crore), and State Express Transport Corporation (Rs 54.41 crore). The sanction covers dues accumulated between July 2023 and April 2024. The transport department had originally sought Rs 2,450.83 crore to clear dues up to Jan 2025, but the govt has now advanced a significant portion to relieve the financial burden on former employees and their families. 'In the past, such dues were settled in smaller tranches of Rs150-Rs200 crore. This time, the govt has sanctioned the amount in one go, which is a major relief. Alumnus donates 30,000 sq ft land worth more than Rs 1crore to TN govt school
Govintharaju Ponnusamy THANJAVUR: An NRI octogenarian alumnus of a govt higher secondary school in a village near Thanjavur has donated 30,000 sqft of his land worth more than Rs 1crore for the expansion of the school, where he studied from 1948 to 1953. The donor, Govintharaju Ponnusamy, 83, is a native of Thirumangalakottai in Orathanadu block of Thanjavur district and is a citizen of Singapore. He studied at the Govt Primary School in Keelaiyur in Thirumangalakottai. 'Though I didn't study beyond Class VI, I wanted to contribute to education. I wanted the children in my village to study well,' said Govintharaju, who contributes to various charities. After his primary education, Govintharaju moved to Singapore in the erstwhile Integrated Malaysia to join his father in his spice business. He settled there with his family and received Singapore citizenship after its independence. After experiencing prosperity in business for decades, Govintharaju visited his hometown a few years ago and got to know about his school, which is now a higher secondary institution. On Aug 8, Govintharaju registered the land in the name of the chief educational officer of the district and presented the documents to the staff of the school and parents of students during Independence Day celebrations. S Valarmathi, the school headmistress, expressed her gratitude to Govindtharaju. She said, 'Our students are performing well academically. The land donation can improve their educational standards and aid their skills in sports.' The parents of students and villagers lauded their village elder and his family for their generosity. Thiyaga Ilango, president of the school parents-teachers' association, said, 'Land donation of such a scale is commendable. We are confident that our children will immensely benefit from it.'
