‘Disgraceful': Rugby rocked by foul play by Lions captain as Wallaby concussed
The acting Lions captain will be forced to front an Independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) hearing on Sunday after an ugly clean-out left Wallabies fly-half Tom Lynagh concussed.
It was a sad end to a hard-fought engrossing series as the Wallabies showed impressive courage to win 22-12 in a chaotic third Test interrupted by lightning.
However, the win has been soured somewhat by the ugly scenes of Lynagh failing his head injury assessment (HIA) following a shoulder to the head from Sheehan.
Commentators, including Wallabies great Tim Horan, and fans were left flummoxed that the cleanout from Lions player Dan Sheehan that led to Lynagh's injury went unpunished.
Many were stunned the incident was not looked at by the Television Match Official (TMO).
Leading Irish rugby journalist Rúaidhrí O'Connor wrote on X: 'Dan Sheehan is incredibly lucky this wasn't a red card'.
Aussie sport journalist Mark Gotlieb posted it was 'unforgivable by the TMO'.
The Times rugby reporter Will Kelleher pondered if it was a 'dodgy clearout'.
Rugby journalist Tom Decent wrote: 'Disgrace. Red card every day of the week. So dangerous.
'You can see Lynagh brace as he knows it's coming.'
Veteran rugby reporter Iain Payten posted: 'Match officials do nothing. Ya kidding at this point'.
Incredibly, Lynagh remained on the field for several more minutes before he was called off to undergo the HIA.
Irish hooker Sheehan faces a potential suspension.
World Rugby said in a statement: 'British & Irish Lions player Dan Sheehan will have a citing complaint reviewed by an Independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) after being cited by the independent citing commissioner Adrien Menez for an act of foul play'.
In bouts of torrential rain at Sydney's Stadium Australia, the hosts went to the break with an 8-0 lead after an eighth-minute try before showing steely nerve to finish the job.
Dylan Pietsch and Max Jorgensen both dotted down to put them 15-0 clear. The Wallabies had thrown away an 18-point advantage to lose the second Test in heartbreaking fashion last week, but learned their lesson.
They largely controlled the contest in front of 80,312 fans, swift at the breakdown and with plenty of attacking flair despite atrocious conditions.
'It was a disappointing week after such a tough loss,' Wallabies captain Harry Wilson said.
'To bounce back the way we did, I'm so proud of everyone. To get the win was so special.'
The teams were forced from the field two minutes into the second half because of a lightning warning, with play suspended for 35 minutes.
'We spoke about that before the game, that it could happen,' Wilson said.
'We had a few plans in place. We just wanted this game so badly, whatever we had to do we were going to do.'
Victory ensured the Lions' six-week visit ended in disappointment after winning all eight previous tour games.
'Our goal before the series was to try to win 3-0,' said Sheehan, who was the Lions acting captain after skipper Maro Itoje went off concussed.
'We gave it everything under harsh circumstances. The Wallabies have been in every Test and I thought they deserved the win.
'It was a bit disappointing on our end to finish with this.'
The Lions won the first Test comfortably 27-19 in Brisbane before clinching a controversial 29-26 series-winning victory in the last minute last week in Melbourne.
That loss was gut-wrenching for Joe Scmhidt's Australia, the head coach rallied his injury-hit troops to bank the biggest win of his tenure.
In doing so, they denied the Lions a first unbeaten series since 1974 and gained some much-needed confidence heading into the Rugby Championship this month.

In 2024, Kade won his category at the Darwin Supercar Indigenous round, significantly marking the team's first-ever race win and podium finish. With a blend of determination and skill, Kade is steadily progressing toward his goal of becoming a professional racing driver. KARLAI WARNER, 18, QLD Mob: Kabi Kabi / Wakka Wakka Sport: Motorsport/Car Racing Achievements: Top 5 finish in The Qld State Excel Championship Karlai Warner is an inspiring young race driver with her sights set on becoming the first female GT3 champion or Supercar driver. Notably, she was the only Indigenous Competitor in her age group. Her outstanding performance continued in Team Kumite where she claimed second position in Australia, a remarkable achievement. JULIANNA-BREE TALBOT COOKE, 18, QLD Mob: Kuku Yalanji Nation Sport: Soccer Achievements: Successfully competed at Local, Regional and State levels Julianna Bree is a rising talent in soccer. Her skills on the field have resulted in invitations to train with several national-level clubs. In 2022, Julianna-Bree played for the Australian Indigenous Koalas football team subsequently moving to Brisbane to play for the Under 23 Peninsula Power NPL side, which serves as a feeder competition for the NWSL Brisbane Roar. LINKYN MACMILLAN, 18, QLD Mob: Kalkadoon Sport: Boxing Achievements: 2024 World Youth 75kg Bronze Medallist, 2 x Australian Champion, 3 x QLD State Champion, 2 x Golden Glove Champion, 1 x Trans Tasman Cup Champion, 1 x SE QLD Champion Linkyn started boxing at 9-years-old to improve his fitness for Rugby League. Through daily training and climbing he quickly rose through the ranks placing 1st in his Division at the 2024 Youth Nationals. This qualified him to compete in the 2024 Youth World Championships in China. This experience showed him how he compared to the international athletes and further increased his love and drive for the sport and to improve. His next goal is to make the Open National team in order to be able to compete in World Cups. From battling chronic fatigue to becoming a state champion in indoor rock climbing, this 18-year-old is determined to scale to new heights with his sights set on the ultimate peak: the Olympics. JENNIVAMOOSE (11) chased well at Sandown and has won at The Valley. SUGGESTED BET: Karburan each-way. TAKEKO (6) led and was only grabbed late when resuming but looks to have the perfect run at The Valley and 1200m is her best distance. JENNI THE FOX (1) is a talented mare that should be strong late. ENNA'S DREAM (8) won well at Geelong second-up and could measure up to this. VAIN CHAMPAGNE (10) finished strongly from the rear at Caulfield and could is worth including again. SUGGESTED BET: Takeko to win with a saver on Jenni The Fox. MARKET MOVER: Enna's Dream $4.20 – $3.80. MORNINGTON GLORY (1) is the class horse of the field as a Group 1 winner and his jump out showed he's going well. OAK HILL (3) is a smart sprinter that will be running on well late. BEAST MODE (6) is honest and will be fitter for two runs this time in. MIDWEST (2) is speedy and should be in this for a long way. SUGGESTED BET: Mornington Glory to win. Tricky race but MARTIAL MUSIC (6) could represent a bit of value, stepping up in class after a strong second-up win at Cranbourne. DREAMZEL (5) led and boxed on well to salute at Sandown and has drawn well here. BIG ME (2) is down in grade and is yet to miss a place at The Valley. RATTLE AND BANG (3) did a good job at Sandown and races best at this trip. SUGGESTED BET: Martial Music each-way. Plenty of talent engaged here but ESHA (11) looked a smart filly in the making on debut in SA and has trialled well leading up to this. OYSTER LANE (4) has gone well behind smart types at both runs to date and should be prominent. ANGEL LADDER (12) improved significantly to score second-up and will again be better for that outing. HELLO ROMEO (1) was sound in Sydney and should again have every chance. SUGGESTED BET: Box trifecta 1, 4, 11, 12. MARKET MOVER: Esha $2.25 – $2.10. Getting to The Valley could suit NELLIE LEYLAX (9), which went well from a tough draw at Flemington and meets his rivals on much better weight terms. SAYEDATY SADATY (5) is going well and will again be the hardest to beat. SMOKIN' ROMANS (2) is fresh for this and has the quality to be thereabouts. BERKELEY SQUARE (1) will give a start but will be fitter for two runs in. SUGGESTED BET: Back both Nellie Laylax & Sayedaty Sadaty. RESET THE JAZZ (2) has shown plenty of heart to get home at his last two starts and should again have every chance from barrier three. PRIVATE JUMBO (10) led and wasn't far away at Sandown and has raced well at The Valley. PRINCEOFNOTTINGHAM (6) has steadily improved at his last couple of runs and is unbeaten at The Valley. NANA'S WISH (5) is consistent and drops in grade for this. SUGGESTED BET: Reset The Jazz each-way. Tricky finish to the meeting but APACHE SONG (1) will find this easier than her first-up outing at Group 3 level and she loves The Valley. GREAT MAXIMUS (4) ran on well at Flemington and could settle closer. ELOUYOU (2) has struggled in harder races at his last two but could improve back to The Valley. LUNA CAT (10) was sound at Caulfield and should go well again.
