Tour de France: Sarah Gigante falls from second to sixth in final stage
Victory in the penultimate stage on Saturday had put Gigante, 33, within touching distance of joining Cadel Evans as the only Australians to take out the classic race.
But the toll of her solo climb played out in the final stage, losing ground on the Joux-Plane descent to finish the stage seventh.
It knocked her off the final podium as France's Pauline Ferrand-Prevot claimed victory.
'It was two hours of pain, heartbreak and hope all in one,' Gigante said at the finish.

'It was a super hard day, I was already feeling not so strong physically going up the Joux Plane,' she said at the finish.
'I was hoping to get away and have a head start before the downhill, but I was pretty much getting dropped by the top.
'And then of course the descent was just so hard. It was a long day out.'

Gigante had been with Ferrand-Prevot and a few others when they tackled the mammoth 11.6km climb up Col de Joux Plane.
But known to have trouble descending, Gigant was dropped on the long downhill and couldn't regain her place with no teammates to help her,
She ended up nearly seven minutes behind the winner when the final stage was complete.
The other Australians to complete the Tour de France Femmes were Neve Bradbury (71st), Lauretta Hanson (75th), Ruby Roseman-Gannon (78th) and Emily Watts (114th).

Cocky cyclist causes mass pile-up in closing stages of championship race
This is the embarrassing moment a cocky cyclist celebrated too early and crashed metres before the finish line. The incident happened during the final stage of the Iraqi Cycling Championships in Erbil, The Sun reports. Cyclists from more than 20 clubs featured in an individual race at the junior event. The action was coming to an end in routine fashion as a rider dressed in orange cruised to victory. Riding well clear of the chasing pack and with the finish line in sight, the rider sat up in his seat and threw his arms into the air to being the celebrations. Then it all went wrong. The bike began to shake and the youngster then lost control as the wheel appeared to fall off. He tumbled to the floor and skidded across the road just metres from the finish line. The two riders behind managed to avoid the incident with both crossing the line to take up the top two spots on the podium. The third rider however wasn't as lucky, while he managed to avoid the tumbling bike … he collided with the crashed rider and was sent flying over the handlebars as his bike soared into the air. To really rub salt into his wounds, he was passed by another rider just centimetres away from the line as his body slammed over the finishing line. Sadly even if he crossed in third he likely wouldn't have been awarded a spot on the podium thanks to a little-known rule that states riders must have their hands on the handlebars at all times. For the rider who had come so close to capturing victory, he was left sitting on the road in disbelief as to what had just unfolded. He pushed his bike away in disgust before the rest of the chasing pack closed in on the finish line to complete the race. Footage of the chaotic race ending quickly whipped around the internet with fans left stunned by the scenes. One wrote: 'There is a lesson to be learned here.' Another added: 'This is why stay low-key until it's done.' A third wrote: 'Only hurt was the embarrassment.'

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina reveals online hate she received after Canadian Open loss to Naomi Osaka
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has spoken out about the deluge of hateful abuse she received online from frustrated gamblers after losing a match in Canada, including messages wishing her death and celebrating Russia killing her compatriots. Following her straight-sets loss to Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open, Svitolina posted screenshots of the messages on Instagram. The abuse was directed at her, while other racial slurs also targeted her husband, the French tennis player Gael Monfils, who is Black. One abuser hoped that Russia "kills all you (expletive) Ukrainians" in the war raging in Svitolina's country. "To all the bettors: I'm a mum before I'm an athlete," Svitolina wrote in her Instagram story. "The way you talk to women — to mothers — is SHAMEFUL. If your mothers saw your messages, they'd be disgusted." Earlier this year, British player Katie Boulter said she received death threats during the French Open targeting her and her family, while the WTA and ITF called on betting companies to do more to stem the flood of online abuse players face on social media. Boulter told the BBC in an interview that online abuse has become the norm and that she thinks many of the messages are sent by people who are placing bets on tennis matches. Her comments coincided with the WTA and ITF publishing a first season-wide report into online abuse, showing that 458 tennis players were targeted by more than 8,000 abusive comments and posts on social media in 2024. The report said 40 per cent of the abuse came from "angry gamblers". Last month, AFL footballers Jase Burgoyne and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera revealed the racist messages they received on Instagram, sparking outrage from their clubs and the league as they looked to identify the culprits. Wayne Bennett called out for sad act towards star playmaker as Latrell Mitchell detail emerges
English playmaker Lewis Dodd has been ruthlessly dropped by Wayne Bennett once again, leading many to call out the veteran coach's actions. Dodd's time at Redfern has been difficult to say the least. Since joining the NRL club ahead of the 2025 season, Dodd has featured just six times, many of which he has come off the bench. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1. Offered a salary of $650,000 per-week, Dodd took a chance on the Rabbitohs, leaving England to play under Bennett. However, despite Souths' injury crisis - which Bennett says is the biggest he's ever seen - Dodd has barely been given a chance since arriving at the Rabbitohs. Bennett was asked about Dodd's future before a 60-14 defeat to the Brisbane Broncos last weekend, and simply said he 'couldn't answer at the present moment' whether he would even see out his three-year contract, a hammer blow for the young half. And it only got worse for the 23-year-old on Tuesday as Bennett dropped him to the NSW Cup, instead opting for untested 21-year-old Ashton Ward. Bennett's decision has been met with swift criticism from the NRL world and saw former NRL player Joel Caine advised the youngster to leave the club to save his career. 'You've got to feel for Lewis Dodd. Just get out of there, mate,' Caine said on SEN. 'What a rollercoaster ride it's been for him. 'He came out here and won a World Club Challenge against Penrith (with St Helens), and was very close to man of the match. And now he's found himself behind Ashton Ward. Bennett is just not a fan of him.' Many fans were equally unimpressed. 'Lewis Dodd once again hard done by. Bennett has lost the plot,' one fan wrote on social media. 'Bennett has lost his mind,' another added. 'Dodd gone again. I give up at this point,' a third said. Could Wayne Bennett make a late switch? There is a chance Bennett may move fullback Jye Gray into the halves instead of Ward, if Latrell Mitchell – who was listed in the reserves in jersey No. 22 – is declared fit and ready to play against the Titans this weekend. Bennett could also return his superstar fullback to centre, in place of Tallis Duncan, who has been filling in as an outside back due to the Bunnies' extensive injury list. Mitchell's return would be a huge boost for Souths and Bennett in his quest to avoid his first-ever wooden spoon. The Rabbitohs are equal on points with the Titans (16) after just six wins in 2025, but their inferior points differential means they are currently last on the NRL ladder with just six rounds to play. A loss to the Gold Coast on Sunday would make Bennett's Bunnies the favourite for the spoon, hence why this weekend's clash is largely being declared the 'Spoon-Bowl'.
