Man orders a latte in Spain and 'unfair' bill leaves him floored
A latte ordered at a Spanish restaurant has left a man floored by an "unfair" bill which has split opinion online. Members of the public were stunned to see the price of the drink, particularly the charge added to the receipt after the man requested a different type of milk.
A screenshot of a message sent to a bar in Oviedo, northwest Spain, has been shared online and has since gone viral. The customer sent the well-known content creator a message, and moaned that it was "unfair" not to warn people of charges for substituting ingredients to the coffee.
The man, who is lactose intolerant, had asked for lactose-free milk, and the charge has left him feeling ripped off.
The customer wrote: "Hello, I'm writing to you from Oviedo (Asturias), specifically from the Fontán neighbourhood, an old and popular area of the city.
"I'm sending you this complaint about being charged a supplement for lactose-free milk; if they're going to charge extra, they should warn you."
Attached to the message was a photo of the receipt showing that they were charged an extra 30 cents for having lactose-free milk.
The furious customer continued: "I think it's unfair; it's an intolerance, not a whim, and lactose-free milk costs the same as any other milk."
@soycamarero posted this to his social media, and asked: "Are you for or against this extra charge on the bill?" Members of the public were split on how to feel about the excess charge.
One user wrote: "Then they wonder why people don't go to bars/cafés and instead grab a sandwich and sit in a park."
Another shared: "I'm vegan. I know that having soya or oat milk is an additional expense for the business. Opening a bottle just for one coffee isn't worth it or you risk it going off. My alternative? Talk to the waiter to see if they mind you bringing your own oat milk."
A third wrote: 'Against it; the price difference between a litre of regular milk and lactose-free doesn't reach that amount; besides, the profit made from coffee is significant."
But some found themselves wondering whether the cost of lactose-free milk was the reason behind charging more. One person considered the overheads and found themselves in favour of the extra charge.
They explained: "Lactose-free milk is quite a bit more expensive than normal depending on brands; if it's own-brand there might be a difference of 12-15 cents; if we're talking about branded ones, regular milk can cost nearly one euro per litre while lactose-free ranges between €1.20 and €1.80 depending on brand."
Another added: "If I open a litre of lactose-free milk for someone and at the end of the day I have to throw it away that would be a loss."
A third suggested: "If the establishment complies with regulations, this shouldn't surprise the customer. It must be listed, fixed and visible to customers before ordering. On the other hand, people aren't used to checking prices but do complain afterwards."

In attendance were Kiko Argüello, one of the apostolate's initiators, and two other members of the organization's international team: Maria Ascensión and Father Mario Pezzi. The meeting, held at Tor Vergata — the same place where Pope Leo XIV presided over the vigil and celebrated the closing Mass of the Jubilee of Youth with more than a million souls Aug. 3 — was presided over by Italian Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the pope's vicar for the Diocese of Rome. Also present were five other cardinals and some 30 bishops. According to the Neocatechumenal Way website, the meeting took place in an atmosphere of celebration and communion, with young people from some 50 countries in Europe, 30 countries in the Americas, 11 countries in Africa, and 20 countries in the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania. After Reina's greeting, accompanied by 100 priests from Redemptoris Mater seminaries of the Neocatechumenal Way, an icon of the Virgin Mary was set up on the large stage along with a large crucifix to be the visual focal point of the gathering. A photo of Carmen Hernández, the Spanish servant of God who was also an initiator of the Neocatechumenal Way, was also placed on the stage. The apostolate is now present in 138 countries around the world. Ascensión then spoke about St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, before moving on to the day's readings from the Gospel of St. Matthew (Mt 9:35-10:1) in which Jesus says 'the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.' Then Argüello addressed the young people, asking: 'What is God's deepest desire? To give you the gift of the Holy Spirit, of his life, of his happiness. But to give you this gift, God needs your freedom, because as St. Augustine reminds us: 'God, who created you without you, will not save you without you.'' Looking at the crucifix, Argüello then said: 'I invite you to look at this cross: This is the image of freedom. The cross is the image of freedom. Here is a man who has given himself up for you, who will set you free to give yourself to others and stop offering yourselves only to yourselves. How can you receive the Holy Spirit today? If you accept that your self be crucified with Christ.' The initiator of the Neocatechumenal Way then reflected on Jesus' call to Peter, and Peter's response to the Lord, to his love for the journey toward holiness. The call to a vocation In these types of gatherings, Argüello encourages those who believe they may have a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life to come forward in what the Neocatechumenals call 'the call to a vocation.' 'First the boys — 5,000 of them stood up! — and then the girls — 5,000 of them stood up! — and went to the stage to receive the blessing of the cardinals and bishops. For those who responded to this initial call, a process to discern and mature their vocation will then take place at the various vocational centers,' the Neocatechumenal Way website explains. To conclude the event, which lasted approximately three hours, Reina told the young people present: 'After accepting the kerygma, aspire to greater things, to holiness.' 'May this be the response to Pope Leo's call. The Lord has addressed this invitation to us; the Lord calls all of us to holiness. Always leave room for the Word of God, because God takes nothing away from our happiness,' he added. The country's military said the helicopter took off from the capital, Accra, and was heading northwest towards the Ashanti region when it went off the radar. The wreckage was later found in the Adansi area of Ashanti. Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were killed, as well as Samuel Sarpong, vice-chair of the National Democratic Congress ruling party, Muniru Mohammed, a top national security adviser, and the four crew members. Parents dump 10-year-old son at airport in Barcelona and board plane after finding his passport had expired
Nothing was going to stop these parents getting away on a holiday. Not even their young son having an out of date passport — so they left him at the airport. The parents abandoned their 10-year-old on finding out that his Spanish passport had expired on checking in at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Desperate for a holiday, they boarded their flight anyway, hoping a relative would eventually turn up to pick up their boy. With his mum and dad preparing to jet off, the boy was comforted by an air-operations coordinator only known as Lilian. She took to TikTok to blast the parents. 'The kid told police that his parents were on the plane, on their way to their home country for vacation,' she said in Spanish in the video. 'The explanation given to the authorities was that the child was travelling with an expired passport from Spain and needed a travel visa. 'Since he didn't have a visa, they left the kid in the terminal and called a relative to pick him up. 'I didn't see it as normal. The police didn't see it as normal either.' Lilian went on to say that it was one of the most bizarre experiences she had ever had. Directing her question to the parents, she said: 'Hallucinating? 'I'm an air traffic controller and as a controller, I've seen a lot of things but this has been completely surreal. 'I'm amazed to think how parents could possibly leave their 10-year-old son at the terminal because he can't travel due to documentation issues.' Lilian continued to berate the parents, wondering how they could be so selfish. 'They call a relative, who might take half an hour, an hour or three hours, and they calmly board the flight and leave the child behind,' she said. 'As a mother, I'd freak out.' It is believed that the parents were ultimately escorted off the plane before departure They were taken to a police station for questioning. It is not known if they have been charged. It is not the first time a child has been abandoned at an airport — deliberately or accidentally. In May, a two-year-old was swept away in a luggage conveyor belt in New Jersey after wanderiong off from her mum. And in 2018, a German couple forgot their five-year-old daughter at Berlin's Stuttgart Airport. They each claimed that they believed the other had taken charge of the girl.
