Israeli attacks kill at least 81 people including aid seekers in Gaza

Al Jazeera19-06-2025
At least 81 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip as desperate Palestinians continue to seek food amid an ongoing hunger crisis.
Among those killed since dawn on Thursday, 59 were in Gaza City and the north and 16 others were waiting for aid assistance near the Netzarim Corridor, which splits north and south Gaza.
Starving Palestinians have gathered in the area daily to receive packages from the United States- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which the United Nations has condemned for its 'weaponisation' of aid.
Bassam Abu Shaar, who witnessed the Israeli attack at the aid site, told the AFP news agency that people had gathered overnight in the hope of receiving food.
'Around 1am [22:00 GMT Wednesday], they started shooting at us. The gunfire intensified from tanks, aircraft and quadcopter bombs,' he told AFP by phone.
'We couldn't help them or even escape ourselves,' he said, adding that the size of the crowd had made it impossible for people to flee Israeli fire near the Shuhada Junction.
In recent weeks, Israeli attacks on Palestinians attempting to receive food aid have increased, killing dozens of people.
Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum said the attacks on people at aid sites are becoming a 'daily routine'.
'More than three months of full [Israeli] blockade on border crossings has turned Gaza into a hunger point where people have run out of all kinds of humanitarian supplies and now found themselves to be forced to move to these designated centres to get bags of flour, bottles of water and alongside food boxes that, according to nutritional experts, contain low nutritional value,' Azzoum explained.
'These attacks are still unfolding, turning all humanitarian corridors into killing grounds,' he said.
According to the Reuters news agency, the Israeli military claimed, without providing evidence, that there were attempts by 'suspects' to approach forces in the area of Netzarim in a way that had endangered them.
The army added that forces fired warning shots to prevent suspects from approaching them, and it was currently unaware of injuries in the incident.
Separately, an Israeli drone attack on a charging point in Shati Refugee Camp killed 19 people. At the same time, an Israeli aircraft launched intensive air strikes and bombarded several homes in Jabalia, northern Gaza.
Over the past 24 hours, 69 bodies, including two that were recovered after an attack, and 221 wounded people were admitted to hospitals in the besieged enclave, medical sources said.
Since the war began in October 2023, at least 55,706 people have been killed and 130,101 wounded, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

Burkina Faso's junta expels top UN official

Burkina Faso's junta has expelled the UN's top official to the West African nation over a report about children caught up in the conflict. Carol Flore-Smereczniak was declared 'persona non grata' because of her role in drafting the report that came out in March. Covering a two-year period, the study detailed more than 2,000 cases of reported child recruitment, killings, violence and abuse - blaming Islamist insurgents, government soldiers and civilian defence forces. The military government, which came to power in September 2022 and is led by Capt Ibrahim Traoré, said it had not been consulted by the UN, saying the report contained unfounded allegations. It did not cite any documentation 'or court rulings to support the alleged cases of violations against children attributed to the valiant Burkinabé fighters', the government's statement said. Flore-Smereczniak was appointed in July 2024 - more than 18 months after her predecessor was expelled. The UN representative before her, Italian Barbara Manzi, was declared 'persona non grata' by the junta in December 2022. (Agencies)

US expands sanctions targeting International Criminal Court

The United States has announced a new round of sanctions targeting members of the International Criminal Court, the latest instance of a pressure campaign against the court that previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes in Gaza. In a statement on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that two judges and two prosecutors were being added to a list of ICC members sanctioned by the administration of President Donald Trump. 'The Court is a national security threat that has been an instrument for lawfare against the United States and our close ally Israel,' Rubio said in a statement. The ICC previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. In a statement on Wednesday, Netanyahu welcomed the new sanctions as a 'decisive act against a smear campaign of lies against the State of Israel'. The new sanctions target Kimberly Prost of Canada, Nicolas Guillou of France, Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. Guillou is an ICC judge who oversaw a pre-trial panel that issued the arrest warrant for Netanyahu, while Khan and Niang are the court's two deputy prosecutors. The US Department of State cites the role all three played in issuing and upholding the Israeli arrest warrants. The ICC is also probing possible war crimes by US forces in Afghanistan, although it said it will prioritise abuses by the Taliban and ISIL (ISIS) in that investigation after fierce US pushback. Prost, according to the State Department announcement, is being sanctioned for 'ruling to authorize the ICC's investigation into US personnel in Afghanistan'. Neither the US nor Israel is a party to the ICC, but the court maintains it can issue arrest warrants for citizens of such countries because the places in which the alleged crimes took place are parties to the court. The US has been a longtime critic of the ICC and has bristled at the prospect that its own officials could someday face prosecution for alleged war crimes, but under previous administrations had stopped short of extreme steps, such as sanctions. An initial round of sanctions targeting several ICC officials by the Trump administration earlier this year met widespread condemnation and criticism that the US was undermining international law to protect a close ally. The US accused those officials of taking part in 'illegitimate and baseless actions' against Israel and the US. Two of the individuals sanctioned on Wednesday are from France and Canada, two countries among several that recently announced that they would recognise a Palestinian state in response to Israel's abuses in Gaza and continuous efforts to seize lands in the occupied West Bank through the expulsion of Palestinian residents. France expressed 'dismay' at the most recent round of US sanctions.
