A young man who died in a double-drowning tragedy off the Co Donegal coast has been remembered for his quiet but sociable presence, smiling face and ability to always listen and respond with a deeply respectful and generous heart.
Matt Sibanda, 18, was laid to rest following his funeral mass at St Mary's Oratory in Buncrana today.
He was due to begin sitting his Leaving Certificate exams in the coming days at Crana College in Buncrana.
It is two weeks to the day since Matt's friend, Emmanuel Familola, 16, was also laid to rest in the same church after the pair perished in the same tragedy in Lough Swilly.
Both young men were understood to be trying to retrieve a ball from the water while swimming during the recent good spell of weather off Buncrana on May 10th.

Another friend who also got into difficulty managed to swim ashore.
Matt's body was found hours after he went missing following a huge search by the emergency services and local volunteer vessels.
His friend Emmanuel was plucked from the sea earlier in the day and rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital but tragically passed away a few hours later.
Emmanuel was laid to rest on May 17th.
However, Matt's funeral was delayed until today to allow family members travel from their native Zimbabwe.
Included among the traveling group was Matt's beloved grandmother Josephine.

Earlier this week, Matt's family traveled to the scene of the tragedy to see where their beloved son, brother and grandson died.
A small ritual took place at the pier which was overseen by Matt's grandmother in her role as head of the family so they could release his soul and allow him to go to heaven.
A large crowd attended today's funeral to say a final farewell to the young man who had carved out a special place in the heart of the local community despite his short time there.
As well as Matt's beloved mother Bonnie, his brother Thembalethu and sisters Modest and Sandy, were present to say a final farewell to the young man who have played such a huge part in all their lives.
Before Matt's mass began, a member of Matt's family thanked the local community for their support and friendship for the family since Matt's tragic passing.
Fr Francis Bradley, parish priest, said Matt was undeniably wise and good beyond his years.
He said "From his earliest days in Zimbabwe through to his time here in Buncrana, Matt has always been recognised for his quiet but sociable presence, his smiling face and his ability to always listen and respond with a deeply respectful and generous heart.
"In the Old HSE Building which became his home since his arrival here in late 2023, Matt was the eldest child, and with his great gifts and talents, particularly the respect he showed to everyone but most especially to his mother, he became a natural leader – a first among equals.
"He was undeniably wise and good beyond his years with an ability to sit with other children reading, debating and learning with great enthusiasm, always curious to know a little more.
"His surname, Sibanda, means 'Lion'. Our new Pope has taken the name Leo, which also means 'Lion'. Pope Leo and Matt Sibanda shared something important in common – their ability to listen to all sides of the debate, never judging, but helping all sides to reach a better solution.
"All of this stemmed from his profound respect for his mother. He always listened to her and he never ever spoke back to her even once throughout his eighteen years. A man of few words, a good and kind boy, a humble kid who would play with the other children, always looking out for his sister Sandy.
"He adored her, and she him. He would watch her when his Mam was working; he taught her to ride a bike; he would play piggy back with her and chase her after school – always kind and happy.
"He had the perfect balance in life, for he loved food, healthy food, and loved exercising, lifting weights; ironically, he was a powerful swimmer."
Fr Bradley added that while the world is now moving on from the terrible tragedy of May 10th, the local community in Buncrana and Donegal is still coming to terms with it.
He added "While some distance has been drawn now from those terrible moments, the loss of Matt and Emmanuel is still an open wound, a sore blow for all of us, but most especially for his grieving family.
"We are all struggling still to come to terms with the loss, still speechless at the suddenness of it, still heartbroken at the enormity of it. While the world has moved on in some respects, we are nevertheless still numbed by the sadness of what happened.
"For these reasons and more we feel the need to reach out in hope to one another and to God in a search for peace more than answers, and for the healing consolation which can only ever come from the heart of God alone."
Among those present to support Matt's family was Commandant Joe Glennon, Aide de Camp to An Taoiseach, representing Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, Kate Gillen of IPAS, CEO of the Donegal Education Training Board Anne McHugh as well as various public representatives.
Many of Matt's teachers and fellow pupils from Crana College as well as Principal Mr Kevin Cooley were also present.
A huge bloom of white flowers reading Matt's name lay at the foot of the altar accompanied by a photo montage of Matt and a football made from flowers to reflect Matt's love of the game.
As well as traditional hymns, songs from Matt's native Zimbabwe filled St Mary's Oratory as both communities came together to remember a fine young man taken too soon.
Matt's heartbroken family led his white coffin out of St Mary's church to the haunting sounds of 'Amazing Grace' before his burial in the nearby Cockhill Cemetery.
Outside, dark clouds hung over Buncrana on the last day of May as a town which has seen more than its fair share of tragedies, closed the page on another sad chapter.

Aidan was airlifted to Cork University Hospital, following the collision. However, he passed away on Wednesday August 6. No other injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The teenager was travelling alone at the time of the incident. The local parish priest and GAA club chairman have led tributes to the "fine young man". Parish Priest Fr Anthony O'Sullivan said "the entire community are devastated at the news of the death of a fine young man." Locals said that Aidan was a keen sportsman and played hurling with the local Lixnaw GAA club. As a mark of respect all club training has been cancelled this week. Lixnaw Club Chairman John McElliogtt said: "He was a lovely young lad to deal with. Gardai and RSA measures aimed at driving crash deaths on Irish roads "He usually played in the forwards and would always chip in with a few scores." Aidan and his family are also well known in athletics circles in Kerry. The teenager's former school, where he sat his Leaving Certificate exams last summer, have also paid tribute to him. They remembered him as a "quiet" but engaged member of the school community. Causeway Comprehensive School said: "Staff and students of Causeway CS were shocked and deeply saddened at the sudden passing of our former student Aidan Forristal. "Aidan just completed his Leaving Certificate exams in June 2024. He was a quiet student but also engaged in all aspects of school life. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends." Currently, the local community is rallying around Aidan's parents, William and Tara, and his siblings. INFORMATION APPEAL Gardai are appealing for any witnesses of the incident, in particular those who may have dash-cam footage and who were travelling in the area on 2 August between 5.15pm and 5.45pm. Donegal man (63) sexually assaulted five boys and showed them pornography
Martin Joseph Cullen was accused of touching the boys' genitals and buttocks while he was also charged with showing some of the boys pornography on a phone. A Co Donegal man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting five young boys over a 14-year period. Martin Joseph, known as 'Joe', Cullen, 63, was found guilty of seven counts of sexual assault on various dates between 1993 and 2007 at locations in County Donegal. Cullen, from Colehill, Newtowncunningham, had denied assaulting the boys during a trial that lasted five days at Letterkenny Circuit Court. A jury of six men and six women took under two hours of deliberation to find the former delivery driver guilty on all seven counts against him. Cullen remained emotionless in the dock while his victims and their families cried and hugged each other at the back of courtroom number 1 at Letterkenny courthouse as each verdict was read out. All of the seven charges were contrary to section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990 as amended by section 37 of the Sexual Offenders Act, 2001. Some of the incidents occurred while he was engaged in various activities with the boys One of the complainants alleged that he was 'about seven or eight years' old when Cullen was teaching him to play a game. The defendant was alleged to have reached down the boy's trousers before touching his genitals. The victim said he remembered Cullen telling him that he would buy him something new and this comment 'was something that stuck with me for years'. After the incident, Cullen was said to have 'just fixed himself up and left' after hearing a door closing nearby. Another of the victims told how Cullen would shake hands tightly with them until they would say "I am your friend." Some of the complaints said they were between eight years old and 13 years old when Cullen showed them pornography on an old Nokia phone. He would then ask them if they were 'hard' before reaching for their private areas. The witnesses told how it was only in later years that each discovered they had been sexually assaulted at various times by Cullen. The trial also heard from retired Garda John Harkin, who outlined his attendance at the address of the accused and photographs collated from the site, as well as some family members of complainants. Photo: North West Newspix The mother of one of the victims told the court that when the incidents were disclosed, she did not tell her husband as he would have "gone mad." She said she also kept the incidents to herself as she did not think other people would believe them. One mother said that her son informed her that Cullen had touched his penis over his trousers after showing him pornography on his phone as well as "researching for him." The woman said she also did not tell anyone what her son had told her as she felt he were now old enough and that Cullen would not prey on him again. Barrister for Cullen, Mr James McGowan, SC, with Peter Nolan, BL and instructed by solicitor, Mr Donough Cleary, asked the woman why she did not tell anyone that her son had been assaulted by Cullen. She replied that she didn't tell anyone because she also felt sorry for Cullen's family. She added that she simply didn't know what to do but that perhaps she should have gone to the authorities. She said: "I was hoping somebody else would tell but that it wouldn't have to be me." A sibling of a victim told how Cullen would always have been "touchy, feely" but that she didn't realise at the time that it was wrong and always thought he was just a "big child'. She said that she was not personally making a complaint against the accused as she did not remember anything specific happening to her. Another complainant recalled he was between 11 years and 13 years old when he awoke to find Cullen in a bedroom he was staying in. The accused, who was holding his own child in his arms at the time, had his hand on his penis and as the boy awoke fully, Cullen took his hands away. On another occasion, the boy was sleeping on a sofa but had wrapped himself tightly in a duvet to prevent being touched again by Cullen. However, Cullen managed to get his hand inside the duvet to touch his privates. The man later told his mother and in 2017 made an official complaint to Gardai. Cullen was first arrested at his home in December 2017 for an offence under the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act for sexual assault and questioned a number of times about the allegations. The investigation was conducted by Detective Garda Bobby Carey and his colleague Detective Garda Eoin Waters. During all interviews, Cullen denied that anything had happened with any of the complainants. At one stage, Cullen said the accusations were false and he told the detectives: "I refuse to answer questions that I know nothing about." Both counsel for the state, Ms Fiona Crawford, BL, and counsel for Cullen, Mr McGowan, addressed the jury of six men and six women. Ms Crawford told the jury that this was a case of five young men outlining to strangers what had happened to them many years ago at a time when they never thought they would be big enough or brave enough to make such a complaint. Photo: North West Newspix Mr McGowan asked the jury to decide how reliable were the accounts of any of the witnesses in the case now up to 25 years later pointing to changes in their stories. Judge Roderick Maguire read his charge to the jury in the case and directed them to go away and deliberate. Exactly one hour and 38 minutes later, the jury returned and said they had reached a verdict. They found the accused guilty on all seven counts. Judge Maguire remanded Cullen in custody for sentencing until the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court in October. He extended the legal aid certificate to allow for both a psychological and psychiatric report to be carried out on the accused. Cullen was led away to holding cells by prison officers while his victims and their families emotionally hugged each other and cried at the back of the courtroom.

Donegal road remains closed in wake of two-car crash
A road where a two-car crash occurred yesterday in Co Donegal remains closed to allow for an examination by forensic investigators. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the collision on the N13 Letterkenny-to-Ballybofey road in the townland of Listillion, shortly after 5pm yesterday. The driver of one of the vehicles, a woman aged in her 60s, is being treated for life-threatening injuries at Letterkenny University Hospital. No other injuries were reported. The Garda Press Office indicated that diversions are still in place this morning. READ MORE Anyone who was on the N13 at Listillion between 4.50pm and 5.15pm who may have witnessed the crash should contact gardaí. Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity at the time, and who may have camera footage including dash cam, are asked to make this footage available to gardaí. Gardaí can be contacted at Letterkenny Garda station on 074 9167100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station. Investigations are ongoing.
