Israel attacks southern Syria after Damascus airstrikes
Israel has launched the military campaign after members of the minority Druze community and Bedouin tribes clashed in southern Syria, prompting the interim government to send troops.
The Israeli forces attacked military headquarters and other targets in the capital and southern Syria.
Israel says the military campaign is aimed at protecting the Druze community as some members live in Israel.
Arab media have reported that the Israeli forces carried out strikes against an armed Bedouin group in southern Syria on Thursday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on the same day, "We have set forth a clear policy: demilitarization of the region to south of Damascus."
Netanyahu stressed that Israel will not allow Syrian forces to enter the southern Syrian region near the border with Israel.
Israel appears to be prepared for further action amid growing concerns for escalation.
A US State Department spokesperson told reporters on Thursday that "the United States did not support recent Israeli strikes." The spokesperson called for a ceasefire.

Netanyahu says he will direct military how to achieve goals in Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will convene his cabinet this week to instruct the military how to proceed in the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu said on Monday that he will direct the military how to achieve the objectives of the war his government has set, including defeating the enemy and getting Israeli hostages released. This comes as ceasefire talks between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas are stalled. An Israeli media outlet quoted a source as saying Netanyahu is "pushing for the release of the hostages through decisive military victory." US broadcaster CNN reported that Netanyahu is leaning towards expanded military operations. The Israeli military has ramped up its aid delivery efforts in Gaza since last month, but the enclave is still facing severe food shortages. Israeli military operations continue in Gaza. Local health authorities on Monday said 94 people had died over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 60,933 since the conflict began in October 2023.

Netanyahu renews resolve to continue fighting in Gaza after hostage videos
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has renewed his determination to continue military operations in Gaza, saying that Hamas is not interested in a deal. Netanyahu made the statement in a video on Sunday in reaction to the release of videos showing two Israelis held captive by Hamas. The clips show two extremely skinny men. One of the clips carried a caption that says, "The occupation government has decided to starve them." Netanyahu called the videos horrifying. Hamas was apparently attempting to pressure Israel to increase delivery of food and aid supplies to Gaza. Scores of Gazans have died from malnutrition and starvation amid acute food shortages in the Palestinian enclave. Netanyahu asked the International Committee of the Red Cross on Sunday to swiftly provide food and medical care to hostages in Gaza. Hamas said it is ready to cooperate with the Red Cross if Israel opens humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to all the residents in Gaza and halts airstrikes during distribution.
