Bedok road rage turns violent as Singapore man slashes driver with scissors, jailed five weeks
Sunny Tan Boon Heng pleaded guilty to causing hurt and committing a rash act that endangered the safety of the other driver, 61-year-old Lin Yansong, according to Channel News Asia in its report published today.
The incident occurred on January 10 along Bedok North Avenue 3 when Lin attempted to switch lanes in front of Tan's car, prompting Tan to sound his horn and flash his high beam.
After both vehicles stopped at a traffic light, Tan made a rude gesture seen by Lin in his rearview mirror, leading Lin to confront him.
Tan opened his car door but remained seated, and after a brief exchange, Lin pushed the door shut and walked away.
Tan then exited his car with a pair of scissors and engaged in a one-minute scuffle with Lin, resulting in a superficial 0.5cm cut on Lin's left middle finger.
Tan later attempted to drive away but Lin stood in front of his car to block him; Tan drove forward, causing Lin to retreat, although no additional injuries were reported.
The incident was captured on Lin's dashcam and later reported to the authorities.
Tan's lawyer argued for fines, citing that his client acted in self-defence and had stopped driving after the incident, but the judge rejected the plea.
Principal District Judge Victor Yeo ruled that the case constituted a clear act of road rage involving violence and a weapon, and that a deterrent sentence was necessary.

Couple nabbed over deadly Segamat blaze, allegedly hired by S'pore-based ah long for arson
JOHOR BARU: A couple, believed to be hired by a Singapore-based loan shark to commit arson, have been arrested for a house fire that killed a 72-year-old woman in Kampung Bukit Siput, Segamat, on July 25. Johor police chief Comm Ab Rahaman Arsad said the Segamat District Police Headquarters operations centre received an emergency call regarding a fire involving five houses at about 4.30am. "Investigations by the police and the Johor Fire and Rescue Department found elements of arson. "Johor police formed a special task force for the investigation and arrested the couple, a 21-year-old man and his 19-year-old girlfriend, in Subang Jaya, Selangor, a week after the incident. "Interrogations revealed that a loan shark syndicate in Singapore hired them to carry out criminal intimidation by setting fire to the house of a borrower who had failed to repay a loan," he said in a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters on Wednesday (Aug 13). Ab Rahaman said the couple were further suspected of actively committing mischiefs in Johor and Selangor since July, receiving RM1,000 per job. "At the time of the incident, the victim was alone. She had never received any threat, and it is believed that the loan was taken out by a family member," he added. Four investigation papers were referred to the Johor State Legal Advisor's office and have since received instructions for prosecution. Ab Rahaman added that the male suspect will be charged at the Segamat Magistrate's Court tomorrow with nine charges under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for causing death without intent, Section 436 for arson, and Section 507 for criminal intimidation. KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore commends Malaysia's leadership as Asean Chair in 2025 and credits Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his team for their swift and decisive actions during the recent armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Malaysia's mediation effort resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the two neighbours. Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon ( pic ), said the episode demonstrated that while Asean's consensus-based approach is important, a major crisis requires one to act without delay and with conviction. "Sometimes you need to act fast. Malaysia showed leadership by making the phone calls, bringing the two leaders to Kuala Lumpur and hosting them for talks that led to a ceasefire. "This is what we want to see, every government prepared to step in and tackle challenges head-on," he said on Bernama TV's The Nation, Diplomatic Dispatch programme titled "Malaysia And Singapore: A Bond Beyond Borders." Menon highlighted Malaysia's role in securing an agreement to admit Timor-Leste as Asean's newest member. He described the ability to bring parties with differing views on board as "a good sign of leadership." He said Asean continues to serve as a neutral and comfortable platform for major powers to meet, noting that the recent 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting brought together the foreign ministers of Russia, China, and the United States in various formats.
