Stanley Druckenmiller ramps up health-care stock exposure, gets back into Microsoft
Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller 's top three biggest holdings at the end of June were all health-care stocks and he also invested back into one of his favorite artificial intelligence plays, Microsoft , according to a regulatory filing. The former lead portfolio manager for George Soros' Quantum Fund, who now runs his own Duquesne Family Office, hiked his stakes in Teva Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical company Insmed last quarter, making them his fund's second and third largest holdings, the filing showed. Clinical genetic testing company Natera remained Druckenmiller's top bet, worth more than half a billion at the end of June. The legendary investor, who has never had a down year in the markets, took a $100 million stake in Microsoft in the second quarter, after exiting the tech position in the third quarter of 2024. Druckenmiller was applauded for his big win on key AI player Nvidia in 2022 as he was one of the earliest investors to see the potential in the burgeoning industry, comparing the power of AI to the internet. He once called Nvidia and Microsoft his favored names to play the theme. However, he exited the winning bet last year, later admitting it was a "big mistake" as Jensen Huang's company continued its rally. Still, Microsoft is outperforming the market again this year, up 22% year to date. The stock topped a $4 trillion market cap on July 30 for the first time ever. Druckenmiller shot to fame after helping make a $10 billion bet against the British pound in 1992. He later oversaw $12 billion as president of Duquesne Capital Management before closing his firm in 2010.

Roth cuts gas stocks as oversupply threatens natural gas prices into 2026
-- Roth Capital Partners said U.S. natural gas stocks are facing renewed pressure as oversupply builds, with prices expected to weaken through 2026, in a note dated Monday. The brokerage downgraded several gas-focused exploration and production companies, citing forecasts that Henry Hub prices will fall below futures expectations. Production has risen sharply in recent months, with volumes climbing to 109-110 billion cubic feet per day from spring levels of 106-108 Bcf/d. That increase has pushed the market from balanced conditions to oversupply. Domestic storage now sits 196 billion cubic feet above the five-year average, and Roth expects the surplus to expand as the shoulder season approaches. The brokerage projects 2026 supply growth of 2.5 Bcf/d, nearly matching expected demand growth of 2.75 Bcf/d. Despite strong consumption trends, including liquefied natural gas exports and power generation, Roth sees the market remaining oversupplied. Its model points to a Henry Hub average of $3.25 per million British thermal units in 2026, below the current futures curve near $3.85. As a result, Roth cut its ratings on Antero Resources, EQT, EXE, CNX Resources Corp and Range Resources to 'neutral' from 'buy,' and lowered Comstock Resources to 'sell' from 'neutral.' The brokerage said gas equities are likely to remain in a trading range until supply growth slows. 'Supply ruins the party,' the analysts said, pointing to producers' continued plans to increase volumes, supported by a higher futures strip. While demand is on track for one of the strongest growth years in decades, rising by 4.5 Bcf/d in 2025, the supply trajectory is expected to keep prices capped. The brokerage also noted that the global LNG market could become oversupplied by 2027 as new capacity comes online in Qatar, Australia, Mexico and Africa, potentially curbing U.S. export demand. Roth's forecast shows a modest 0.4 Bcf/d surplus in 2026, suggesting that absent a colder-than-expected winter or a slowdown in drilling, gas prices will struggle to reach the $4 mark. 'We expect domestic gas supply to grow to 110-111 Bcfgpd or more in 2026 even with less associated gas in a weaker oil market, which we think will be too high and will lead to gas prices closer to $3.25 per mmbtu range next year,' the brokerage said. Can Elon Musk's Tesla Shake Up The U.K. Electricity Market?
Elon Musk's automotive and engineering firm Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is back in the U.K. electricity market frame, after it applied for a licence to supply power to British consumers. The application for the licence was filed with the U.K. market regulator Ofgem late last month by Tesla's European division. It is currently open for public consultation and comments until August 22. Then it may take up to nine months to issue the licence after which things get serious. The company and Musk's interest in the British market isn't new. It started the process at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in April 2020 by approaching the U.K.'s Gas and Electricity Markets Authority, the board that oversees Ofgem, for permission to generate power. If granted final approval, both generating and selling electricity in the U.K. is unlikely to be easy. The country is one of the toughest markets to operate in Europe riddled with political demands for price caps and onerous regulations. It's dominated by suppliers known as the 'Big Six', namely – British Gas (owned by FTSE 100 company Centrica), EDF Energy, OVO Energy, Octopus Energy and ScottishPower – controlling much of the market. In 2019, tough operating conditions saw over a dozen independent U.K. energy suppliers bite the dust. Is A Shake Up Really Possible? The Big Six themselves have seen seismic shifts in recent years. SSE, a former member of the dominant group, exited the residential power supply market after selling the business to OVO Energy. Npower - another dominant residential power brand - was absorbed by One of the biggest U.K. independents – First Utility – was acquired and rebranded by oil and gas major Shell as one of its divisions. But unable to make it work in line with a changed post-Covid strategy, Shell subsequently sold it on to Octopus Energy, which itself has become a market force to reckon with. Alongside acquiring Shell's U.K. power business, Octopus Energy's growing business has also seen it acquire Exagen and ENGIE UK's household supply unit, as well as the customer portfolio of Bulb Energy after the supplier entered administration. Octopus Energy's market share was just shy of 24% at the end of last year, making it the largest U.K. household electricity supplier. That too, a mere eight years after it entered the market. Tesla Has Pedigree However, the move may be viewed or Musk and Tesla's ultimate objective, no new U.K. energy independent's pending entrance has created such a market buzz in the past. And Tesla could crack it, perhaps based on the belief that if Octopus Energy can get the operational balance right, so can it. Tesla will not be starting from a blank canvas. It already operates a power supply unit in Texas for owners of its EVs to charge their cars and compensates them for feeding the surplus electricity back to the grid. In 2017, Tesla built one of the world's largest lithium-ion batteries for the Australian state grid. The move came after South Australia was plagued by blackouts in 2016. It prompted Musk to step in saying Tesla would get the battery storage systems installed and working within 100 days of the contract being signed or the $50 million renewable energy project would be installed for free. It was a target Tesla met quite comfortably in the end. However, supplying power to U.K. homes might be a whole new ball game, and anybody's guess on how it may play out.
