S&P 500, Nasdaq hit new closing highs on rate-cut hopes

The Dow rose 463.66 points, or 1.04%, to 44,922.27, the S&P 500 gained 20.82 points, or 0.32%, to 6,466.58 and the Nasdaq gained 31.24 points, or 0.14%, to 21,713.14. NEW YORK: The benchmark S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices hit new closing highs for the second straight day on Wednesday on hopes that the Federal Reserve was getting close to a monetary easing cycle. But the market reflected weakness in some technology stocks after the previous day's strong gains. Signs that US tariffs on imports have not fully filtered into headline consumer prices came as a relief for investors this week as they seek insight on the impact of trade uncertainty on the economy. Some large technology stocks including Nvidia, Alphabet and Microsoft – among the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks – closed lower as investors searched for new growth drivers. "Valuations are elevated. I do think, though, at the end of the day, the key will be the delivery of earnings, and that's what we're seeing," said Katherine Bordlemay, co-head of client portfolio management, fundamental equities at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. She said the dispersion of stock-level returns in the US is at one of the higher levels of the last 30 years. Apple rose 1.6% after Bloomberg News reported the company is plotting expansion into AI-powered robots, home security and smart displays. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 463.66 points, or 1.04%, to 44,922.27, the S&P 500 gained 20.82 points, or 0.32%, to 6,466.58 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 31.24 points, or 0.14%, to 21,713.14. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks rate-sensitive small-cap companies, rose almost 2% to hit a six-month high. Traders are now fully pricing in a 25 basis-point interest rate cut, according to the CME's FedWatch Tool. The central bank last lowered borrowing costs in December. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday he thought an aggressive half-point cut was possible, given recent weak employment numbers. Investors were also taking notice of other sectors following the recent tech-led rally in US stocks that has pushed valuations of the S&P 500 above long-term averages. Healthcare stocks, which have been beaten down for much of the year, rose 1.6% to rank among the leading sectors in the 11 S&P 500 sectors. Chicago Federal Reserve president Austan Goolsbee said on Wednesday the US central bank is grappling with understanding whether tariffs will push up inflation just temporarily or more persistently, which would inform its decision on when to cut interest rates. CoreWeave, which is backed by Nvidia, fell almost 21% after the AI data center operator reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly net loss. Paramount Skydance jumped 36.7% as the company won exclusive broadcasting rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship for seven years. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 4.05-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 630 new highs and 56 new lows on the NYSE. On the Nasdaq, advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 2.53-to-1 ratio. The S&P 500 posted 40 new 52-week highs and 2 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 149 new highs and 69 new lows. Volume on US exchanges was relatively light, with 16.9 billion shares traded, compared with an average of 18.3 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions. — Reuters

FBM KLCI climbs to four-month high on optimism

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia extended its winning streak to seven consecutive sessions, with the FBM KLCI closing at a four-month high, driven by US July inflation data that came in slightly below expectations at 2.7%, boosting hopes of a Federal Reserve (Fed) rate cut in September. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI jumped 18.70 points, or 1.19%, to close at 1,586.60 from yesterday's close of 1,567.90. The benchmark index opened 1.17 points firmer at 1,569.07, marking its day's low, and hit a high of 1,590.61 during the mid-morning session. The broader market was positive, with advancers trouncing decliners 686 to 390, while 491 counters were unchanged, 955 untraded and 18 suspended. Turnover improved to 2.71 billion units worth RM3.07bil from 2.53 billion units worth RM2.15bil on Tuesday. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the prospect of US monetary easing has directly influenced sectoral performance on Bursa Malaysia. 'The FBM Technology Index and the FBM Financial Services Index led the broader market, each advancing more than 1%. 'Among the FBM KLCI constituents, telecommunications stocks were the top gainers, benefitting from investor rotation into defensive, high-dividend plays amid a stronger ringgit and a softer US dollar,' he told Bernama. He said that rising commodity prices lent additional support to palm oil and energy counters, underpinning the breadth of market gains. Meanwhile, market sentiment was also supported by upbeat regional market performance as well as easing trade tensions following the extension of a 90-day suspension on higher tariffs for Chinese goods. 'Investors are now turning their attention to the upcoming US producer price index and retail sales data due later this week,' he added. Among the heavyweights, Malayan Banking Bhd added 15 sen to RM9.86, Public Bank Bhd gained four sen to RM4.44, Tenaga Nasional Bhd perked up 22 sen to RM13.80, CIMB Group Holdings Bhd rose 18 sen to RM7.19, and IHH Healthcare Bhd put on nine sen to RM6.91. Of the most active counters, Sersol Bhd bagged one sen to 2.5 sen and Telekom Malaysia Bhd surged 23 sen to RM7.23. Meanwhile, Classita Holdings Bhd inched down half-a-sen to nine sen, Tanco Holdings Bhd fell two sen to RM70.5 sen, while Pharmaniaga Bhd was flat at 18.5 sen.

Avangaad divests RM45mil FSO

Avangaad Bhd executive director Datuk Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin. PETALING JAYA: Avangaad Bhd has finalised the sale of its floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel for US$10.5mil (equivalent to RM44.5mil), which will deliver an immediate gain of RM29.4mil. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said it had entered into a memorandum of agreement with MTC Energy Sdn Bhd for the sale of the vessel. The engineering services company said the proceeds will be strategically redeployed into higher-yielding and longer-tenured assets, in line with Avangaad's long-term strategy, while providing additional headroom for financial flexibility. 'The transaction is expected to strengthen the group's financial capacity to sustain a broad, balanced fleet and expand its service offerings across oil and gas (O&G) and non-O&G markets.' Executive director Datuk Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin said the transaction is about 'creating optionality.' 'We are monetising this asset at the right time to ensure Avangaad stays agile and well-capitalised. In asset strategy, success lies in aligning capability with contract tenure.'
