Local visitors and those from far and wide get a wee break from the regular day-to-day for a full day of whims and wonders of Scottish heritage, mixed in with Amanzimtoti charm.
For the great Highland bagpipe, there can be no rest between notes, and as such it takes passion and fierce pride to echo the power of the pipes. The Amanzimtoti Lions Club introduced some of the pipe bands whose dynamic performances underscore the Highland Gathering.
The Johannesburg-based African Skye Pipe Band returns to the greens of Hutchison Park, competing as not one, but two powerful units in both Grades Three and Four. Their dynamic performances bridge the gap between African roots and Scottish tradition. If you hear thunder on the horizon, it's probably African Skye warming up.
With roots dating back to 1943, the Jeppe Pipe Band holds the title of Johannesburg's oldest school pipe band. The band plays formal parades, moving memorials, live concerts and community events, each echoing the power of pipes that echo through generations.

South Africa's oldest pipe band, the Drums and Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders, was founded in 1889, with a legacy rooted in military tradition, much like those of the Highland Games in Scotland's rich history. The band is made up of South African Reserve Force volunteers and civilians. Most notably, the band has played for Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday.
Durban Caledonian Society Pipe Band is a relatively new band, however, they have been a regular sight and sound at concerts, events and competitions across the country. Their Grade Four band will be collaborating with the Pietermaritzburg Pipe Band under the banner of the KZN Callies Pipe Band, making their debut performance at this year's gathering.

‘It's not like before': DJ Maphorisa opens up about the changing Amapiano scene

Yet, beneath the surface, lies an intensely competitive world that few truly understand. In a candid revelation, DJ Maphorisa has slightly pulled back the curtain on the industry, offering a raw and unfiltered look at the realities of the Amapiano scene. During his recent interview with Metro FM's Tbo Touch, the music heavyweight opened up about how the dynamics in the industry have shifted dramatically over the past few years. 'It's tough now, it's not easy - it's not like before,' Maphorisa admitted. Touch immediately responded, 'Wait, wait, wait. I'm getting a headache. If I'm an upcoming artist listening to this conversation and the biggest artist says it's tough, I'm going to give up. How is it tough, Phorry?' Maphorisa didn't shy away. 'There's too much competition. People have short attention spans. They may love one song from you and stick with that for about six months. But if you release 10 hot songs, not all of them will get the reception you expect.' He went on to explain how this shift affects the way artists release and market their music. The emotional and creative toll is significant when audiences only latch onto one hit from an entire album. Using his latest project as an example, Maphorisa shared, 'I dropped an album called 'Ngomoya'. So far, I've released 28 songs, but they only really like one.' Maphorisa's candour comes ahead of the highly anticipated 'Scorpion Kings Live with Friends' set to take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday, August 29. The event is expected to draw fans from across the country, underscoring the duo's status as Amapiano royalty. Amapiano itself has experienced meteoric growth since emerging in the townships of Gauteng in the early 2010s. Initially an underground movement, it has since become a global phenomenon, dominating charts, festivals and playlists worldwide. Artists like Maphorisa and Kabza De Small have played a central role in shaping the genre, blending deep house, jazz and kwaito to create a uniquely South African sound that resonates far beyond the country's borders. Yet with its rise comes gatekeeping and challenges within the industry. As Amapiano becomes more mainstream, the competition intensifies and staying relevant requires not just talent but strategic releases, collaborations and constant engagement with a fickle audience.

His father was not impressed by his son's behaviour and alcoholism, prompting him to send him to a rehabilitation centre. Divya (Nimisha) is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, making it difficult for her family to get her married. Once Anand returns from the rehab centre, his father, fully knowing Divya's condition, agrees to get her married to him without telling Anand her situation. However on the wedding day, when Anand finds out, he agrees to marry her and the couple lead a happy life. Divya becomes pregnant and delivers their child. However, she suspects the child has been taken from her and swopped for another child, while those around her attribute this behaviour to her condition. Anand becomes suspicious of the situation and believes Divya. With the help of Sub-Inspector Chinnasamy (Balaji Sakthivel), Anand goes in search of his newborn, uncovering a syndicate that has been running for many years. Atharvaa, once again in a psychological thriller, delivers a great performance proving he is an under-rated actor that deserves more praise than he receives. He champions the romantic and action lead well. Sajayan in her third Tamil movie outing, delivers her best performance, channeling a mother's emotion and silent suffering well, while Sakthivel gave a realistic character performance. The screenplay is well arranged and DNA keeps you well engaged from the beginning. The movie highlights a key social issue and shocking reveal on how newborns are used as a business. DNA also serves something fresh by having five music directors making up its album, each composing and singing their songs in the movie. The film is available on Simply South.
