50 years of tillage tools celebrated by Pottinger

Agriland07-05-2025

The agricultural machinery giant Pottinger started off life with Franz Pottinger in 1871 when he built a forage cutting machine.
From then onwards, grassland equipment became the staple of the company for over another century.
It was in 1975 that Pottinger acquired Bayerische Pflugfabrik, or Bavarian Plough Factory in Landsberg, a town situated in South West Bavaria, 40 miles west of Munich.

The plough factory is one of the oldest manufacturers of soil preparation implements in Germany and, with this acquisition, Pottinger acquired 85 years of experience along with the expertise to develop high-quality arable farming machinery.
Since then, Pottinger has launched numerous new ranges of machinery, including the new Servo generation of trend-setting ploughs launched in 1981, the built-to-last Lion power harrows in 1991, and the Synkro linkage-mounted stubble cultivator.
Bernberg
A further acquisition was the purchasing of the Rabe seed drill plant in Bernburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, in 2001, marking Pottinger's entry into the crop establishment market, and expanding its tillage portfolio to include mechanical, pneumatic and mulch seed drills.
Another investment of €4.5 million was made by Pottinger in 2021, as it bought out the mechanical crop care division of CFS of Switzerland.
The Pottinger Rotocare is more often used to break the crust of continental fields than for weed control
This brought in the expertise to develop and market mechanical crop care machines such as rotary hoes, row crop cultivators, and light tine harrows,, which were subsequently added to the product portfolio.
In 2022, Pottinger took over the Italian MaterMacc company, which is known for its expertise in precision planting technology, mechanical and pneumatic seed drills, crop care machines, and other original equipment manufacturers components.
Anniversary website from Pottinger
Pottinger consider 2025 as a major anniversary year that will feature numerous activities, retrospectives, and special anniversary offers on tillage farming equipment, crop care machines, grassland implements, and digital agricultural technology.
The company has launched a specially created anniversary website which takes the visitor through the developmental history of Pottinger's arable side, with notes, reviews and comments upon the various machines that it has developed over the past half century.

Mike Lynch's sunken superyacht to be lifted in late June as debris is found

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch's sunken superyachtis set to be lifted from the seabed in late June, the salvage team says, after debris from the boat was recovered. Maritime and investigatory authorities in Sicily approved the final recovery plan following surveys of the seabed and wreck. The stern section of the Bayesian will be temporarily lifted using Hebo Lift 10 — one of Europe's most powerful sea cranes — allowing crews to attach the straps needed to raise the entire yacht later this month. It was originally expected to be raised last month, but salvage efforts were delayed after a diver died during underwater work on May 9, prompting greater use of remote-controlled equipment. The sea crane Hebo Lift 10 which will be used in the recovery operation to retrieve the vessel (TMC Marine/PA) To lift the 56-metre (184ft) vessel, eight steel straps will be attached beneath it, with four messenger lines already fed under the front. The 72-metre mast will be removed using precision cutting tools, and the yacht will be rolled upright and lifted using a custom steel cable system. A full underwater survey around the wreck using remote-operated equipment found 17 possible pieces of debris, including a life raft casing and deck furniture, which have been recovered and brought to nearby Termini Imerese – a town where Italian prosecutors investigating the sinking are based. Marcus Cave of British firm TMC Marine, which is overseeing the salvage efforts, said: 'Following detailed engineering assessment and discussions with the authorities, the works on site are now progressing towards the recovery of the wreck. 'The salvage teams will now hopefully be able to make more systematic progress in preparations for the ultimate safe recovery of Bayesian, whilst ensuring that the safety of those working on this very complex lifting and recovery operation and environmental protection continue to be prioritised.' Billionaire Mr Lynch, 59, and his daughter Hannah, 18, were among seven people who died when the Bayesian sank off the coast of the Italian island on August 19. Hannah and Mike Lynch (Family Handout/PA) About 70 specialist personnel had been mobilised to the fishing village of Porticello from across Europe to work on the recovery operation, which began last month. Inquest proceedings in the UK are looking at the deaths of Mr Lynch and his daughter, as well as Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71, who were all British nationals. Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) investigators said in an interim report that the Bayesian was knocked over by 'extreme wind'. The yacht had a vulnerability to winds, but the owner and crew would not have known, the report said. The others who died in the sinking were US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, and Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the vessel. Fifteen people, including Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued. Mr Lynch and his daughter were said to have lived in the vicinity of London, and the Bloomers lived in Sevenoaks in Kent. The tycoon founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was cleared in June last year of carrying out a massive fraud over the sale of the firm to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011. The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal in the case in the US.

Stellantis offers voluntary redundancy scheme at Turin plant

Stellantis has started a voluntary redundancy plan for 610 workers at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, after introducing the scheme at other Italian facilities, the automaker said today. Stellantis is so far cutting up to 1,600 staff in total across Italy this year through the voluntary redundancy scheme. At Mirafiori, the scheme "is aimed at supporting early retirement or different career opportunities," a company spokesperson said, adding workers at Mirafiori can sign up for it until the end of July. The Mirafiori plant will have a stable workforce from August to prepare for the launch of the new hybrid version of the Fiat 500 city car, the spokesperson said. Full-scale production of the new model is expected to start in November. Luigi Paone of Uilm, one of the unions which agreed the voluntary redundancy plan with Stellantis, said it would be aimed at workers closer to retirement age. The plan "should serve to pave the way for the hiring of young workers as we approach the production start-up of the hybrid 500," Paone said. Between April and May Stellantis agreed similar packages at other assembly plants in Italy, including Melfi and Pomigliano, for a total workforce reduction of up to 1,660 workers this year. The company has fewer than 40,000 staff in Italy, down from 55,000 in early 2021 when the group was created through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA.
