SAULT STE. MARIE — According to unofficial results, voters have approved a bond proposal for Sault Area Schools, allowing for renovations at the newly consolidated school buildings.
In the Tuesday, Aug. 5 election, voters in the school district approved the proposal with 1,892 yes votes to 1,523 no votes.

Sault Area Schools had proposed a millage that would not increase taxes but would allow them to raise an estimated $20,540,000. The district will levy a millage of 1.65 mills for the next 30 years, with the funds to be used for remodeling and refurnishing to make the newly consolidated schools a better fit for the students' needs.
As part of the consolidation, elementary students will move to the former middle school and middle school students will move to the high school, which will house both high school and middle school classes.
"We are absolutely excited to begin the new school year, the energy among the staff is unprecedented," said Kronemeyer. "They are working hard to get their rooms ready, all of their belongings have been moved to the new school buildings. We are really grateful for the opportunity to serve the students of Sault Ste. Marie. It's what we do, what we love and I have the most committed and dedicated staff that serves our students."

Planned projects include turning the unusable pool at the high school into a full-size indoor gym, updating the locker rooms and bathrooms, and adding new technologies for both educational and security purposes.
The district is also planning on renovating the library, multipurpose room and elementary playground area to fit the needs of the student population. Currently, there is no viable playground site at the new elementary school.
The school board is bringing the coalition back together to work alongside architects and engineers to plan the renovations. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, and most of the improvements will be ready for the 2026-27 school year.
"It's a long process but one that we will transparently publicize on our website so people can follow along," said Kronemeyer.

Live updates: Trump heading to Alaska for high-stakes summit with Russia's Putin

President Donald Trump is heading to Alaska on Friday for a high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending Russia's war with Ukraine. Trump has downplayed expectations for the summit, which the White House says is expected to start around 3 p.m. Eastern time. On Thursday, Trump suggested in a radio interview that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could join him and Putin in Alaska for a subsequent meeting. Trump said remaining in Alaska 'would be by far the easiest' way for the three leaders to hold talks. But Trump also cautioned that the meeting with Putin could go poorly, putting the odds of failure at 25 percent. Ukrainian drones attacked the Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region early Friday, sparking a major fire. It is the ninth such strike this month, as Kyiv hits Russia's oil infrastructure, in hopes of reducing the income powering the war. Ahead of talks in Alaska between President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin, pro-Kremlin analysts have raised the possibility of a partial ceasefire or air truce that would halt missile and drone attacks. ANCHORAGE — When President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin sit for a high-stakes summit on Friday, the two leaders will bring vastly different approaches to the encounter.

Will LA Just Be Hosting the MAGAlympics Now?

Los Angeles has been busily preparing to host the Summer Olympics and Paralympics three years from now, a process that will require billions of dollars in private and public investment. But there are new uncertainties, now that President Donald Trump has signed an executive order making himself chair of the task force charged with handling security, transportation and coordination with state and local officials for the Games. There are questions about how exactly the back-to-back megaevents will come together — and under whose authority. How expansive will Trump's role be? Will he send in National Guard troops to patrol the streets, scaring tourists and residents alike? Will there be daily federal immigration raids, with masked agents operating with impunity? How much gilded golden trim will adorn the opening ceremonies?

As Trump pushes a federal takeover of D.C. police, these are your rights

President Donald Trump's deployment of federal law enforcement in Washington has stoked alarm in the nation's capital, putting residents on edge and fueling a sense of fear and unease. The president mobilized about 800 members of the National Guard to the city's streets this week, alongside an unprecedented federal takeover of the D.C. police that he described as necessary to stamp out violent crime.
