AT&T is making cuts to its autopay discounts in April. Ways you can still save

Yahoo29-03-2025

AT&T confirmed this week it will cut its monthly autopay discount for some customers following similar moves by T-Mobile and Verizon, but there are still ways to save on your phone and internet bill.
Starting April 24, AT&T customers enrolled in autopay and the carrier's paperless billing discount program with an eligible debit card will receive a $5 rather than a $10 discount. Customers enrolled using any credit card that is not the AT&T Points Plus credit card will no longer receive the discount.
However, customers enrolled with a bank account will continue to receive the $10 discount for eligible internet plans and $10-a-month discount per phone line for eligible wireless plans, an AT&T spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY.
The move is the latest aimed at nudging consumers to pay with a bank account to avoid credit card processing fees and reduce credit card disputes, transaction failure and rates of fraud, Shikha Jain, a partner at the commercial growth consulting firm Simon-Kucher, told USA TODAY. It comes after the big three telecommunications companies already lowered autopay discounts for customers paying with a credit card.
"We are seeing businesses become more urgent trying to find ways to protect margins, drive up sell, reduce operational costs, while trying to minimize consumer backlash," Jain said. "It's easier to reframe a discount than to justify a price hike."

While the most obvious way for AT&T customers to continue saving money is to switch their payment method to a bank account, Shikha Jain, a partner at Simon-Kucher, said consumers also have other options to capture savings.
"These rules are all designed to cut costs, reduce risk and improve customer profitability without raising base plan prices," Jain said. "But savvy consumers still have levers that they can pull."
She suggested consumers should look for perks in the small print of their contracts and benefits they aren't taking advantage of. These might include making use of promotions bundling your internet and streaming services, or stopping payments for data features you don't need.
"Sometimes it's about calling customer service and finding ways to negotiate better rates and get deals but you have to ask," Jain said.
Similar surgical cost-saving measures as well as moves to boost customer loyalty are happening in other industries as streaming platforms like Netflix cut password sharing and airlines promote branded cards that come with discounts or perks.

Costco to make generous offer to frustrated phone customers

Costco (COST) , the largest warehouse club in the U.S., has been gaining a leg up on its competitors as its membership numbers continue to grow rapidly. During the first quarter of 2025, the number of Costco's paid household members increased to 78.4 million, up 6.8% compared to last year. This contributed to its net income of $1.7 billion, which is 2% higher than what it earned during the same quarter a year ago. Costco even outperformed its competitors by drawing in higher levels of foot traffic during the quarter. While Costco's foot traffic climbed by 6% year-over-year, Sam's Club's only increased by 2.7% and BJ's spiked by 4%, according to recent data from Image source: VIEWpress/Getty Images As Costco welcomes new members to its warehouses, it reportedly plans to launch a generous new deal next week that targets members who are frustrated with their current phone plans. According to a recent report from Costco Insider, Costco's July 2025 Coupon Book will feature a deal that offers members $450 if they switch to T-Mobile (TMUS) and purchase/activate a new phone on either its Experience More or Experience Beyond plan. Related: Costco quietly limits customer purchases of a beloved product Members who switch from AT&T, Verizon, Xfinity, Spectrum, USCellular, Claro, or Liberty Puerto Rico will receive a $200 Costco Shop card and a $250 Virtual Visa prepaid card, equivalent to $450. Customers can even stack the deal, meaning they can receive up to 12 $200 Costco Shop cards and a maximum of four $250 Visa cards if they add 12 lines to the account. The promotion is valid between June 18 and July 20. Costco's upcoming deal comes amid an exodus of T-Mobile phone customers after the provider implemented a series of price hikes. The phone carrier revealed in its first-quarter earnings report for 2025 that the number of customers who cut their phone service increased by 5 basis points year-over-year. Also, while T-Mobile added 495,000 new postpaid phone customers during the quarter, that number is 6% lower than the amount it welcomed during the same time period last year. "So overall, you saw across the industry churn was just on the margin a little elevated, and I think there's a number of dynamics there," said Sievert during the call. "That probably has more to do with kind of macro questions than with competition. You know, I think there's a certain element out there where people are in a time of uncertainty about the future, grabbing what they can afford now. And so you're seeing [more customer] upgrades and switching." Amid this concerning trend, many consumers have been flocking to cable companies to sign up for phone plans. Spectrum, Comcast, and Altice USA have added 886,000 new phone customers during the first three months of 2025, which is up from the 804,000 it added during the same time period last year, according to a recent report from MoffettNathanson. T-Mobile denies new data breach of 64 million records — Are your records safe?

Data breaches at major companies are, sadly, nothing new, but the latest one has an interesting wrinkle. This week, a hacking group claimed it stole 64 million records of T-Mobile customers, but T-Mobile denies there has been any new data breach. A Thursday report from Cybernews cited an unconfirmed dataset from a data breach forum popular for selling stolen data. The dataset contains 64 million lines of sensitive details allegedly siphoned from America's second-largest mobile carrier, T-Mobile. That includes: full names, dates of birth, tax IDs, full addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, device IDs, cookie IDs, and IP addresses. It's clear that data of this nature would be incredibly valuable to malicious actors. Details such as IP addresses can be used to craft highly targeted spearphishing attacks, while identifiers like full names, birthdates, and tax IDs open the door to financial fraud. Cybernews' security team also found that the leak included data points that were not revealed in previous T-Mobile leaks, such as the one in 2021 that T-Mobile just began rolling out settlement payments for. With a potential breach of this scale, most companies would be in crisis mode the moment such news became public. But T-Mobile is adamant that the data hackers shared has nothing to do with it or its customer base. 'Any reports of a T-Mobile data breach are inaccurate. We have reviewed the sample data provided and can confirm the data does not relate to T-Mobile or our customers," a T-Mobile representative told Tom's Guide. The representative described Cybernews' original article as misleading. They added that, given the data set's structure, naming conventions, and noticeable inconsistencies, it appears to be a synthetically generated compilation of outdated or unrelated data, which is a tactic bad actors use to deceive potential buyers. Notably, The Mobile Report highlighted that the popular hack-monitoring website Have I Been Pwned has not updated its website to include the purported data breach. That could mean that all of the information contained in those 64 million lines either was found in previous attacks or, as T-Mobile suggests, is outdated or unrelated to T-Mobile customers. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. For now, it remains unclear whether the hack is legitimate. And that leaves T-Mobile customers understandably on edge in the meantime. The claim could turn out to be false, meaning the data is from previously leaks or contains unrelated or outdated information. However, if this is a new breach under T-Mobile's watch, don't expect compensation anytime soon. As I said before, payouts for the 2021 hacks only started rolling out a few months ago, suggesting that any restitution from this incident could be a long way off. As for what you can do in the meantime, seriously consider investing in one of the best identity theft protection services or the best antivirus software. That way, whether this breach turns out to be real or not, you'll at least have peace of mind that you're doing everything you can to stay safe and secure online.
