RSS did not oppose Emergency all the time, says LDF convener

The Hindu25-06-2025
Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener T.P. Ramakrishnan, MLA, has alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) did not oppose the Emergency all the time.
He was opening a seminar titled 'Memories of the Emergency and neo-fascist threats' here on Wednesday. It was organised by the Keluettan Centre for Study and Research to mark the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Emergency on June 25,1975.
Mr. Ramakrishnan claimed that there were documents showing that the RSS top brass had offered their help to then Union government led by Indira Gandhi to implement the Emergency. 'We need to understand the reality in this regard,' he said. Mr. Ramakrishnan, a local committee secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] during the period, was imprisoned and tortured by the police at that time.
Meanwhile, he also objected to the observation that the current BJP government was a fascist one. 'It has not become fascist as yet, but certainly the government is exhibiting some fascist tendencies. It is another form of fascism,' he said. Mr. Ramakrishnan alleged that the Union government was implementing a 'new form of Emergency' in the country. It was giving a free hand to the corporates and curtailing the rights of the labour class. 'The new labour codes that have replaced some of the age-old labour laws are detrimental to the interests of the working class,' he said.
Sebastian Paul, former MP, delivered a lecture recalling the horror of the Emergency. Mr. Ramakrishnan later released Vilakkukal Ananja Rathri, a book on Emergency authored by Mr. Paul, by handing over a copy to V. Vaseef, State president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India. Some of the political activists who were jailed and tortured during the Emergency were honoured. K.T. Kunhikannan, Director, Keluettan Centre for Study and Research, was present.

Brinda Karat voices concern against Chhattisgarh's approval for mining in Hasdeo region

In a letter to Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat has opposed a recent Chhattisgarh government's approval of diversion of a large forested land in the Hasdeo region of the State for mining purposes. In her letter, the former MP and Special Invitee, CPI(M) Central Committee, wrote there was no public interest involved in the project and it would only lead to exploitation of mineral resources for private gain. A recommendation letter dated June 26, in which the Forest department has approved the proposal for diversion of forest land for non-forestry purpose — coal excavation work in the Kete Extension Coal Block Open Mine Project of the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam or RNUVL, surfaced online on August 4. In the letter uploaded on government's PARIVESH website, Forest department official from Surguja district Abhishek Jogawat has based the recommendation on a survey done by him. The approval has also faced criticism from the Opposition Congress and environmentalists in the State. Demanding its cancellation, they have accused the ruling BJP of sacrificing the interests of the people of State as well as ecological concerns for the benefit of their capitalist friends, specifically the Adani conglomerate that is the mine developer and operator for RVUNL. Echoing similar concerns, Ms. Karat in her August 6 letter sought Mr. Yadav's intervention to 'reverse the destructive decision of the Chhattisgarh Forest department to give the green signal for the operationalisation of the Kente Extension Coal Project which requires the destruction of 1,742 hectares of dense forest land.' The approval follows the so-called inspection of the site by the Surguja District Forest Officer in June this year, she added. Ms. Karat further wrote that these projects were being taken up ignoring the opinions of the gram sabhas involved and the provisions of the Constitution and legal frameworks that made consent of the gram sabhas mandatory. 'Open cast mining affects a very large geographical area beyond the actual project. So even though human habitation in this specific area is negligible, many villages outside the area will be deeply affected. Earlier, more than 1,500 written objections from local communities were given to the government. But these have been ignored,' she wrote.

Haryana govt notifies new Mansa Devi Shrine Board

1 2 Chandigarh: The Haryana govt's notification of the reconstituted Shri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board (SMDSB), comprising regular and associate members, has surprised many, including the heavyweights of Panchkula BJP. Notably, the list of board members notified by the ULB department includes former Speaker Gian Chand Gupta at the top, followed by Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma, Panchkula mayor Kulbhushan Goyal; Banto Kataria, a BJP leader and widow of former MP Ratan Lal Kataria; Kalka civic body president Krishan Lamba, former Panchkula BJP leader R P Malhotra, former city BJP leader Devender Dhawan, Hari Pal Gupta, and Ambala businessman Rishabh Gupta. The associate members include Ishwar Jindal, a staunch RSS worker, and Dr Puneet Bedi, an educationist-turned-politician and head of the intellectual cell of the Panchkula BJP district unit. Though the nomination to the board is a prerogative of the chief minister's office, this time, the induction of RSS men, namely Rishabh Gupta and Ishwar Jindal, along with the induction of Panchkula mayor Kulbhushan Goyal and Krishan Lamba, has surprised and shocked certain BJP leaders, especially those who are eyeing the party's candidature for the Panchkula and Kalka assembly constituencies. In the past, there was a precedent of inducting active visitors and contributors to the shrine. Those associated with the shrine for decades have put a question mark on the criteria. "Barring one or two members, we have hardly seen majority of nominated members visiting Mansa Devi shrine or other shrines. They only come during a CM's visit, or Navratras. This is really beyond our understanding, as the recommendation of heavyweights too has been sidelined," one such disheartened aspirant said. However, businessman Rishabh Gupta said, "This is a sewa given to me and our family, who have been visiting the shrine for many decades. This decision has come from the CMO after detailed deliberation, and we take it as blessings of the deity." Sources informed that district and state-level BJP leaders were lobbying for their respective candidates. "The list was prepared by the CMO, in consultation with CM Nayab Saini and RSS ideologues of the district as well as the state. Former Speaker Gupta, Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma, Banto Kataria, Kulbhushan Goyal, and Krishan Lamba are learned to have been inducted due to their stature in public," sources added. Ishwar Jindal, Dr Puneet Bedi, Rishabh Gupta, R P Malhotra, and Haripal Gupta are said to be backed by RSS. MSID:: 123143273 413 |

CM: TN has double digit growth of 11.19%

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin said TN has become the fastest growing state in the country overcoming multiple challenges. Citing a Union ministry of statistics report, Stalin said on Wednesday that TN's economic growth rate has touched 11.19%, surging past the previous estimate of 9.69%. State has achieved the double digit growth rate after 14 years, he said after distributing appointment orders to youth recruited by state municipal administration department. "We have reached the milestone after crossing multiple hurdles and slander," Stalin said. He said DMK would not remain content with this accomplishment, but would take efforts to reach higher up, through concerted efforts in Dravidian model govt 2.0. It's too ambitious, they said. But with growth like this, what once seemed distant is now well within reach," he posted on X. State finance minister Thangam Thennarasu attributed the double-digit growth rate to financial prudence. "Double digit growth rate in real terms is yet another feather in the hat of Dravidian model govt. The growth was possible due to our financial prudence. We have not only boosted our GSDP but boosted the economy of the country as well," Thennarasu told reporters at Anna Arivalayam.
