Andrew Lansing posthumously awarded as Ohio Corrections Officer of the Year
A Chillicothe corrections officer who was brutally beaten to death by an inmate on Christmas Day has been posthumously awarded Corrections Officer of the Year, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction announced in a news release.
Andrew Lansing, 62, was named as ODRC's Ronald C. Marshall Corrections Officer of the Year, an honor bestowed on correction officers who "personify the agency's core values," the department said in a May 9 news release. Each of ODRC's 28 institutions names a corrections officer of the year. Then, the 28 officers are in the running to be named the ODRC'S Ronald C. Marshall Officer of the Year, according to the ODRC.
Lansing was beaten to death on Christmas Day by an inmate while he was working in a guard shack at the Ross Correctional Institution, The Dispatch previously reported. In the days leading up to his death, he had already been named correction officer of the month.
Rashawn Cannon, 27, has been accused in Lansing's death and faces three counts of aggravated murder.
'Officer Lansing trained many staff members,' Ross Correctional Institution Warden Bill Cool said in a prepared statement. 'He took great pride in teaching new staff how to be firm, fair, and consistent. Andrew was a true leader. His heart was larger than his body, and he was always willing to help anybody. We continue to grieve his loss at RCI.'
Lansing was also posthumously honored by RCI after they changed the name of their Roll Call room to the Andrew Lansing Roll Call Room, the Chillicothe Gazette previously reported.
Lansing began working at RCI in 1994 after serving as an infantryman and sergeant in the United States Army. He also served in Iraq and helped with prison operations there, the ODRC said.
'Officer Lansing represented everything good about us – he was loyal, professional, served as a role model and mentor, a husband and a father, a friend, a veteran and a trusted colleague,' ODRC Director Annette Chambers-Smith said in a prepared statement.
'The way that he greeted everyone, staff, volunteers, contractors, incarcerated people, was exactly how we hope all of our officers treat the people they interact with. He was always pleasant; he knew everyone's stories and had an interest in their lives. His murder was a senseless and unimaginable tragedy, one that shook the very foundation of our agency. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to his family, friends, and loved ones every day. He was very deserving of this honor, and he will never be forgotten.'

Lansing-area teen dead, another injured, after a power line electrocution incident
One teenager is dead and another hospitalized after a power line electrocution incident near Lansing, Michigan. The accident happened Tuesday near an apartment building in Leslie, according to a report from Leslie Police Chief Evan Bennehoff. While the incident is still under investigation, officers learned "the boys touched the power line with a metal pole," the police chief said. The Leslie Fire Department responded to the call on Worthington Place Drive. 11 years in prison for man who shot grocery store worker and assaulted correction officer
A 21-year-old Magnolia man has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison for shooting a teen grocery store employee in 2023 and for assaulting a correctional officer later that year. In addition to his 11-year prison stint, the Delaware Department of Justice said Jay'Mere Matthews will have several levels of probation to go through after he is released. Matthews was charged after the Aug. 22, 2023, shooting of a 19-year-old Redner's Markets employee near the grocery store located at 2500 S. DuPont Highway in Camden. The employee, according to the DOJ, was unarmed. Matthews was being held at Sussex Correctional Institution for that crime when prosecutors said he assaulted a correctional officer on Christmas Day of that same year. Matthews pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree assault, second-degree assault of a correctional officer and a weapons charge. He was sentenced on May 27. He will receive a mental health evaluation and may serve a portion of his sentence at the Delaware Psychiatric Center new New Castle before being remanded to the state Department of Correction. A Man Was Arrested After Breaking Into the Grounds of Windsor Castle
A man has been arrested after sparking a security scare at Windsor Castle. The intruder entered the restricted grounds of the castle on Sunday where he was detained on suspicion of trespassing and possession of drugs, police told news outlets today. 'A man in his thirties has been arrested on suspicion of trespass on a protected site and possession of Class A drugs after entering private grounds at Windsor Castle,' a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police, who are responsible for royal protection, told media in a statement. 'Officers in the grounds spotted the man just after 13.00hrs on Sunday, 1 June and quickly arrested him. He was then passed into the custody of Thames Valley Police.' Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest to media, pointing out that the man did not enter the inner grounds at Windsor Castle. The man has been bailed and an investigation is ongoing. The Sun, which broke the story, quoted a source as saying the incident 'caused quite a stir,' but that 'at this stage it appears there was no intent to cause any serious harm.' Windsor Castle is one of the King's official residences. However, last weekend he was photographed at Sandringham in Norfolk where he waved to those gathered as he made his way to church. Prince William, Kate, and their three children live in Adelaide Cottage, which is on the grounds of the Windsor Castle estate. It is not known if they were home at the time of the incident, however their cottage is not situated next to the castle itself where the intruder was detained. Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment. This is not the first time that an intruder has made it into the castle grounds, and previous incidents have at times been serious. On Christmas Day 2021, a man was arrested after breaking into Windsor Castle armed with a crossbow. He was later charged under the Treason Act and apologized to the royals.
