Independence Day: CM slams Manuvad, backs Samvidhanvad
Comparing Manuvad to Social Darwinism, the CM warned that allowing such thinking to shape governance would undermine democracy and social justice. 'Our Constitution enshrines liberty, equality and fraternity. To ignore this is to betray the freedom struggle,' he said, invoking Dr B.R. Ambedkar's call for political democracy to be grounded in social democracy.
He linked this philosophy to the state's Guarantee Schemes, saying they are designed to counter extreme economic inequality — with the wealthiest 10 percent holding 80 percent of India's wealth yet contributing just 3 percent of GST revenue, compared to the 97 percent borne by ordinary citizens.
Since May 2023, schemes like Anna Bhagya, Shakti, Gruha Lakshmi, Gruha Jyothi, and Yuva Nidhi have received over Rs 96,000 crore, boosting women's workforce participation by 23 percent and raising per capita income.
Siddaramaiah also highlighted record agricultural arrivals, Rs 51,339 crore in farm allocations, Rs 10 lakh crore in industrial proposals, Rs 1.35 lakh crore in Bengaluru projects, expanded health and education infrastructure, renewable energy capacity rising to 24,000 MW, and digitisation of land records.
He reiterated the government's commitment to eliminating regional disparities, strengthening welfare for marginalised groups, and protecting Karnataka's share in central resources.
The CM said Karnataka now ranks first in per capita income, with a 101 percent rise in the past decade, and is spending over Rs 1.12 lakh crore this year on welfare measures. The state has also received more than 250 national awards in two years, and ranks first in justice delivery according to the India Justice Report.
In agriculture, the government reversed previous privatisation moves, strengthened APMCs to record 164 lakh metric tonnes in arrivals — a 447 percent rise — and supported farmers with MSP for mango and copra, plus compensation for Togari crop failures.
This year's budget allocates Rs 51,339 crore to agriculture, but Siddaramaiah urged the Centre to resolve urea supply shortages. The 'REWARD' scheme has delivered soil resource cards to 8 lakh farmers, while incentives worth Rs 3,283 crore have gone to dairy farmers.
On industry, the CM said 18 Special Investment Regions covering 44,166 acres have been declared, Rs 10 lakh crore worth of proposals are in the pipeline, and Karnataka ranks second nationally in FDI. The manufacturing sector contributes 23.6 percent to GSDP, while tourism policy reforms aim to create world-class infrastructure.
The education budget stands at Rs 65,000 crore, with 500 Karnataka Public Schools being set up, new hostels, improved mid-day meals for 53 lakh children, and expansion of technical education. The state is framing its first Karnataka-specific education policy based on recommendations from the Sukhadeo Thorat panel.
In health, super-speciality hospitals have been completed in Belagavi and Kalaburagi, the Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyothi scheme expanded, and maternal mortality reduced by 26 per cent. Cancer care centres now operate under a hub-and-spoke model, while the Gruha Arogya Scheme has widened screening for non-communicable diseases.
Urban development includes Rs 1.35 lakh crore worth of Bengaluru projects, e-Khata expansion, resolution of the B-Khata issue, and wastewater reuse to replenish lakes. Irrigation plans include completing the Yettinahole project by 2027.
The CM also announced Rs 5,000 crore annually for Kalyana Karnataka's regional development, projects to combat sea erosion, renewable energy growth to 24,000 MW, digitisation of 100 crore land records, and upgrading 3,300 hamlets into revenue villages.
Concluding, the CM urged citizens to reject divisive ideologies and unite in safeguarding harmony, democracy, and constitutional freedoms. 'Let us make Karnataka a garden of peace, rooted in the values of the Constitution — not in the hierarchies of Manuvad,' he declared.

US-India Trade Talks Face Setback As American Delegation Postpones New Delhi Visit
The upcoming round of negotiations for the India-US bilateral trade agreement faces an uncertain timeline as the American delegation is expected to postpone its planned visit to New Delhi scheduled for later this month. According to an unnamed official speaking to PTI, the sixth round of discussions, originally set for August 25-29, will likely be rescheduled due to mounting trade tensions between the two nations. This development occurs against the backdrop of deteriorating trade relations, with Washington implementing punitive tariff measures on Indian exports. Since August 7, the United States has maintained a 25 percent duty on Indian goods, and an additional 25 percent penalty is scheduled to take effect from August 27. This second tariff serves as punishment for India's continued purchases of crude oil and military equipment from Russia, despite ongoing international sanctions. The combined impact of these tariffs will result in a substantial 50 percent duty on Indian exports entering the American market, creating significant challenges for Indian exporters and potentially disrupting established trade patterns. The timing of these measures coincides with America's sustained pressure on New Delhi to liberalize access to politically sensitive sectors, particularly agriculture and dairy markets. India has maintained a firm stance against such demands, categorically refusing to make concessions that could jeopardize the economic well-being of small-scale farmers and cattle rearers. The Indian government views these sectors as crucial for rural livelihoods and food security, making them non-negotiable areas in trade discussions. Despite the current diplomatic friction and trade disputes, commercial relationships between the two countries continue to demonstrate resilience and growth. Official commerce ministry statistics reveal that India's exports to the United States experienced robust growth of 21.64 percent, reaching USD 33.53 billion during the April-July 2025 period. Simultaneously, imports from America increased by 12.33 percent to USD 17.41 billion during the same timeframe. The United States has emerged as India's most significant trading partner during this period, with total bilateral trade volume reaching USD 12.56 billion. This figure underscores the substantial economic interdependence between the two nations, despite ongoing political and policy disagreements. Both governments have previously committed to completing the initial phase of the bilateral trade agreement by fall 2025, with ambitious long-term objectives of expanding bilateral trade from the current USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030. These targets reflect the enormous potential for economic cooperation between the world's largest democracy and its most powerful economy. Following President Donald Trump's announcement of additional tariffs on Indian exports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address to advocate for increased domestic production and consumption of Indian-made products. The Prime Minister emphasized his government's unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of India's agricultural community. Modi declared his resolute opposition to any policies that could harm Indian farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers, stating that his administration would serve as a protective barrier against detrimental foreign trade demands. He reinforced India's position of refusing to compromise on policies affecting these vulnerable economic sectors. Recent diplomatic developments may influence the trajectory of trade relations between the two countries. A significant meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Alaska over the weekend, raising speculation about potential improvements in Washington-Moscow relations that could indirectly benefit India. During discussions about the Ukraine conflict, Trump adopted a more measured approach toward sanctions, suggesting he might reconsider additional punitive measures in the coming weeks. His statement that immediate secondary sanctions were unnecessary and could be "devastating" for the targeted countries has generated hope that the additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods might be reconsidered. The postponement of trade negotiations reflects the complex interplay of geopolitical considerations, domestic political pressures, and economic interests that characterize modern international trade relationships. Both nations must navigate these challenges while maintaining their strategic partnership and shared democratic values. The delay also highlights the difficulties inherent in negotiating comprehensive trade agreements between major economies with different development priorities and political constraints. As India continues to protect its agricultural sector and rural communities, and the United States pursues its own trade and foreign policy objectives, finding mutually acceptable solutions becomes increasingly challenging. The rescheduling of the American delegation's visit represents a temporary setback rather than a permanent breakdown in negotiations, with both countries likely to resume discussions once immediate tensions subside and diplomatic conditions become more favorable for productive dialogue.

Congress Leader's RSS "India's Taliban" Remark, BJP's Mahatma Gandhi Reply
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad's "Indian Taliban" remark for BJP's ideological parent, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has drawn a sharp response from the ruling party. The BJP has said that the Congress abuses every nationalist organisation and loves banned radical outfits such as PFI and SIMI. Speaking to news agency ANI, Mr Hariprasad, former MP and currently a member of the Karnataka legislative council, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising the RSS in his Independence Day address. "They (RSS) are trying to disturb peace in the country. I will only equate RSS with Taliban, they are Indian Taliban and the Prime Minister is appreciating them from Red Fort," he said. "Did any 'Sanghi' participate in the freedom struggle? It's a shame that RSS is not a registered organisation. We don't know where they get funds. Any NGO that wants to work in the country should register, as per the Constitution," the former Rajya Sabha MP said. Mr Hariprasad said the BJP and RSS are "masters of twisting history". "BJP and RSS are the masters of twisting history, and they are trying to rewrite history. It was AK Fazlul Huq (Bengal Prime Minister before Independence) and (Sangh ideologue) Syama Prasad Mookerjee who moved the first resolution in Bengal for the Partition. (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah and (Vinayak) Savarkar were of the opinion that both religions need a separate state. They are trying to blame Congress for it," he said. Delivering his 12th Independence Day address, the Prime Minister on Friday congratulated the RSS for completing 100 years. "Today, I would like to proudly mention that 100 years ago, an organisation was born - Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Hundred years of service to the nation is a proud, golden chapter. With the resolve of 'vyakti nirman se rashtra nirman', with the aim of the welfare of Maa Bharati, swayamsevaks dedicated their lives to the welfare of our motherland... In a way, RSS is the world's biggest NGO. It has a history of 100 years of dedication," Prime Minister Modi said, ahead of the Sangh's centenary celebrations on September 25. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla responded sharply to Mr Hariprasad's remarks and said the Congress sees goons in Indian forces, surrender in Operation Sindoor, Taliban in RSS and considers Pakistan its own. "Insulting the forces, constitutional institutions, social organisations and Sanatan has become Congress's identity. Courts have pulled them up multiple times because of targeting nationalist organisations," he said. "The Congress's mindset is Taliban. Why did Mahatma Gandhi and Jayaprakash Narayan praise RSS? Why did (former President and Congress veteran) late Pranab Mukherjee visit the RSS headquarters?"
