Johnson on talk of Maxell pardon: '20 years was a pittance'
Johnson said during an interview on NBC News's 'Meet the Press' that it's up to President Trump to determine whether the former Epstein associate's cooperation is worthy of a pardon or commutation.
'If you're asking my opinion, I think 20 years was a pittance. I think she should have a life sentence at least,' Johnson told NBC News's Kristen Welker.
'Think of all these unspeakable crimes, and, as you noted earlier, probably 1,000 victims,' Johnson continued. 'It's hard to put into words how evil this was, and that she orchestrated it and was a big part of it, at least under the criminal sanction, I think is an unforgivable thing.'
'So again, not my decision, but I have great pause about that, as any reasonable person would.'
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met with Maxwel l for two days late last week amid calls for greater transparency surrounding the Epstein case. While some have suggested her testimony is invaluable, others have expressed concern about the reliability of her testimony, noting she is accused of making multiple false statements under oath during her 2021 trial.
Trump did not rule out the possibility of pardoning Maxwell, when asked about it last week, but said he has not given it much thought.
'It's something I haven't thought about it. I'm allowed to do it, but it's something I have not thought about,' Trump told reporters when asked about a possible pardon or clemency for Maxwell.
'I certainly can't talk about pardons,' he later added, while leaving the White House for a trip to Scotland.
When first asked in the NBC interview about a possible pardon, Johnson deferred to the president.
'Well, I mean, obviously that's a decision of the president. He said he had not adequately considered that. I won't get in front of him. That's not my lane. My lane is to help direct and control the House of Representatives and to use every tool within our arsenal to get to the truth,' Johnson said.
Johnson also stressed House Republicans' desire for transparency and said he hopes Maxwell is telling the truth.
'I hope so. I hope that she would want to come clean,' Johnson said, when asked whether Maxwell can be trusted. 'We certainly are interested in knowing everything that she knows. And as you'll note, in our House Republican majority, we're working towards that.'
He noted that House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has issued a subpoena for Maxwell's testimony and hopes to bring in the former Epstein associate to speak before the committee.
'I hope she's telling the truth. She is convicted. She is serving a 20-year sentence for child sex trafficking, and so her character is in some question,' Johnson said. 'But if she wants to come clean now, that would be a great service to the country, and we'd like to know every single bit of information that she has. I certainly hope she's telling the truth.'

Democrats Schumer, Jeffries demand meeting with GOP to avert government shutdown
Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries Monday called on their Republican counterparts to meet immediately to avert a government shutdown looming as soon as the end of next month. The Democratic congressional leaders, both of whom are from New York, called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, and Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, to sit down this week to discuss a plan to pass next year's budget, which would normally require negotiation with the minority party to secure the 60 votes needed in the Senate to avoid a filibuster. 'We have the responsibility to govern for all Americans and work on a bipartisan basis to avert a painful, unnecessary shutdown at the end of September,' Schumer and Jeffries wrote. The Democratic leaders noted they are willing to work with Republicans on a bipartisan basis to negotiate a budget deal that would keep the government open past Sept. 30. But they accused President Donald Trump and GOP leaders of plotting to govern without any input from Democrats and shut down the government if they don't get their way. 'Many within your party are preparing to 'go it alone' and continue to legislate on a solely Republican basis,' the Democratic leaders wrote. Government funding will expire Sept. 30. Lawmakers say to prevent a shutdown Congress will likely need to pass a stopgap funding measure when lawmakers return to Washington, D.C., after Labor Day. In exchange for their cooperation in passing new budget measures, Democrats want Republicans to agree not to turn around later in the year and pass a rescissions package cutting some of that same funding. Republicans recently voted to claw back $9 billion in previously appropriated funding and defunded the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, taking advantage of the legislative loophole that rescissions only require a simple majority in the Senate, not a 60-vote bipartisan supermajority. Schumer and Jeffries are also pressing for the administration to release funding it has unilaterally held up even though it was allocated by Congress last year. Republicans have suggested they may seek to pass one or more policy bills before the midterm elections using the arcane reconciliation process, like they successfully did with Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill. That measure, which polls say is very unpopular with voters, enacted draconian cuts to health care spending to bankroll tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations. _____

Donald Trump Insulted Taylor Swift While Praising Sydney Sweeney In A New Rant
President Donald Trump is continuing to respond very normally to news that Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican. The actor found herself amid backlash following her "great jeans" American Eagle ad, in which she said, 'Genes are passed down from parent to offspring, often determining traits like eye color, personality, and even hair color. My jeans are blue." Given the political climate, some criticized the ad as a racist "dog whistle." Related: This weekend, BuzzFeed was the first major outlet to confirm that Sydney is registered as a Republican in Florida, according to publicly available voter registration records. When Trump was seemingly told about her registration in an interview this morning, he responded, 'She's a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad!' Shortly after the interview, Trump hit Truth Social with another take: "Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em Sydney!" Indeed, Sydney's Ultra Wide-Leg Jean is currently listed as out of stock on American Eagle's website. Interestingly, the success of American Eagle sub-brand Aerie has been attributed to its emphasis on diversity in its branding. Related: Trump compared the ad to car company Jaguar's viral "Copy Nothing" campaign last year, which featured a diverse selection of models and was branded "woke" by the right: "On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil. Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad." Related: He further evoked the Bud Light boycotts, which began after transgender TikToker Dylan Mulvaney posted a less-than-a-minute-long video on Instagram promoting the company's giveaway. The President wrote, "Shouldn't they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed, in a short campaign, the Company. The market cap destruction has been unprecedented, with BILLIONS OF DOLLARS SO FOOLISHLY LOST." "Or just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift," he continued, taking another shot at the singer. "Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can't stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT. The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Related: Similarly, Trump posted (unprovoked) back in May, "Has anyone noticed that, since I said 'I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,' she's no longer 'HOT?'" It's worth noting that Taylor is reportedly enjoying some downtime after her record-breaking Eras tour. Cool! Very normal stuff from the President! California Republican to introduce bill banning mid-decade redistricting
Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) said he plans to introduce legislation on Tuesday that would ban all mid-decade redistricting efforts nationwide and nullify any new maps approved before the 2030 census. In a statement Monday, Kiley took aim at his own governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, who has said he is exploring several options for California to take on its own redistricting push, in response to Texas Republicans' move to redraw its maps. Newsom said he is working with the legislature to bring a new map directly to voters for approval in a special election this November. 'Gavin Newsom is trying to subvert the will of voters and do lasting damage to democracy in California,' Kiley said in his statement. 'Fortunately, Congress has the ability to protect California voters using its authority under the Elections Clause of the U.S. Constitution. This will also stop a damaging redistricting war from breaking out across the country,' he continued. Kiley, in his statement, did not mention Texas, which has proceeded with a midcycle push to approve new maps that would give Republicans in the state five more pickup opportunities ahead of the 2026 midterms. Texas Republicans proceeded with that plan at President Trump's urging. Any similar initiative in California could leave Kiley vulnerable, as a Republican congressman in a Democratic state. Newsom, who met with Texas Democrats late last month, said any move would be 'predicated on Texas moving forward.'
