What has the ‘pornification' of pop culture done to women?
For me, there is a little too much about reality television, but it's a big part of the culture so there's no way of avoiding it, from Big Brother and An American Family. And Gilbert introduces me to one I'd never heard of before: Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire, which she describes as 'the beginning of reality TV's determination to view twenty-first century women through a nineteenth century frame: Jane Austen heroines who, deprived of agency or power of their own, could only compete to claim status and self-betterment through their looks, their alliances and their rivalries'. Pretty much.
Or, as Jerry Hall said in 1985, 'My mother said it was simple to keep a man, you must be a maid in the living room, a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom.' Hall updated it: 'I said I'd hire the other two and take care of the bedroom bit.'
But by far the most striking, most frightening, aspect of the book is the way in which Gilbert has both drawn on, and expanded, the work of philosopher Amia Srinivasan, The Right to Sex and Gail Dines' Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality. Porn trains us.
Porn trains us in how to be women. And worse, it trains men in how to treat women. 'It has trained a good amount of our popular culture ... to see women as objects, as things to silence, restrain, fetishise, or brutalise,' says Gilbert. The fleshed-out concept of pornography as a textbook for how women must be in their lives is terrifying. Now I've read Gilbert's persuasive arguments, I'm embarrassed I've ever been persuaded otherwise. I've never felt so wrong in my life. There is now, she argues, a 'pornification' of everything, including music.
We saw, in the 90s, a distinct shift from angry, abrasive and 'thrillingly powerful women' (Madonna, for example) who were suddenly replaced by, ah, girls. Soft, sweet, compliant. But what about when the anger, directed at women, appears in the lyrics of male artists?
Gilbert cites a 2006 German study that revealed that those who listened to sexually violent and aggressive songs, including Eminem's Superman and The Offspring's Self Esteem, were more likely to have negative thoughts about women. Sure, it's fine to think what you want, but the men in these studies were also far more likely to have 'thoughts of vengeance' directed at women.
What about when men go further than just thinking about vengeance? In 1995, an electrician fired from the home of Pamela Anderson and her first husband Tommy Lee broke into their home, stole a video of the couple having sex and spread it everywhere. It became the 'Pamela Anderson' sex tape, the first of its kind, revenge porn before we even had a name for it, says Gilbert.
Yes, appalling when Anderson's sex tapes were broadcast and sold for all to see. But now that kind of thing happens frequently. The victims aren't always famous, but they are just as stripped of agency as Anderson was all those years ago, but they don't have the same back-up. They wear their shame in private and maybe their parents aren't even convinced it wasn't the fault of the victim.
Gilbert explains how we got to the stage where exploitation is the fault of those who suffer it. And as she points out, 'The logical extension of objectification is dehumanisation.' Why would anyone care about the non-human?

Gilbert's book is bleak, well-argued and compelling. And unlike many in this genre, there are no real recipes for hope beyond small sites of forward lash. She writes: 'I have no idea what happens next. But history suggests that women will be much harder to sideline than the Trump‐Vance administration may anticipate.'
I hope she's right. But will we ever really get to post-feminism? Sure, when we get to post-patriarchy. As Gilbert makes clear, we've got a long way to go, baby.

'The show is not being cancelled': Seven denies Sonia Kruger in trouble after debunking reports Dancing With The Stars not renewed
Channel 7 has publicly denied reports that Dancing With The Stars Australia will not be renewed after speculation the cancellation could impact the show's hosts Sonia Kruger and Dr Chris Brown. Dancing With The Stars is set to return to Channel 7 next week with 12 popular Australian celebrities set to tackle the foxtrot. Kruger, 59, is reportedly under contract with Seven for over $1 million a year and currently hosts The Voice and Dancing With The Stars. The TV star, who began her career as a ballroom dancer and appeared in the iconic film Strictly Ballroom, has been closely associated with the dance series since it first aired on Seven in 2004. However, the TV star could soon be down to just one gig at Seven amid reports the upcoming season of the long-running dance competition series will be its last. A TV insider who spoke to claimed Seven was 'tipped to axe' Dancing With The Stars because the show is too expensive to produce. Seven's decision to 'revive' the show in 2021 was reportedly at the centre of contract negotiations to woo Kruger back from Channel 9. The contract, which made Kruger one of the highest-paid women in Aussie TV, also included gigs on the now-cancelled Holey Moley and Big Brother. If true, Kruger will be down to just her hosting duties on The Voice to justify her seven figure salary, a rarity in the industry amid a massive drop in viewers and advertising revenue in free-to-air. In a statement to the Daily Mail, Seven debunked reports that Dancing With The Stars will not return to screens in 2026 and insisted 'the show is not being cancelled'. Nine gave Kruger her first on-air presenting role on the series Wonder World! in the 1990s before she moved over to Seven to work as an entertainment reporter. In 2011, Kruger joined Nine for the second time where she hosted the morning program Mornings alongside David Campbell and its successor Today Extra, as well as Big Brother and The Voice. Kruger was rehired by Seven in 2019 by then-CEO James Warburton, who she infamously called 'God' in her Gold Logie acceptance speech. Despite decades of experience, Kruger was only nominated for the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter at the Logie Awards for the first time in 2022. She was first nominated for the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television in 2022 and won the top gong in 2023.

Around 2007, the song became something of a phenomenon when people started sending prank links to it on YouTube. A user would be told the link was for one thing, but ended up being 'Rickrolled', or taken to the song. There's no doubt the prank helped the song stay fresh in the minds of people, leading consumers to search for the song on Spotify, which eventually led to the 1 billion streams. 'So who would have believed, after all these years, Never Gonna Give You Up has had a billion streams on Spotify' Astley posted on his official TikTok account. 'How amazing. Let the spin begin It's always funny when a company tries to discredit a story by trying to change the narrative. That's just what happened in regard to my exclusive story last week about I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! facing major budget cuts and its plan to pre-record for the 2026 series. On Wednesday, Pedestrian published a hit job on my reporting without attributing the original article and without including the writer's byline. Instead, it credited The PR fluff piece had obviously been given to the outlet by Channel 10, who did not want to officially confirm my reporting, but rather change the narrative. According to the gushing story, the change from live to pre-recording has nothing to do with budget cuts (heaven forbid), but more to do with the availability of big names who do not want to do the show live. As per the article: 'This change is massive,' one network insider spilled to 'Live TV has always been the dealbreaker for certain 'celebs.' Now that it's pre-recorded, a whole bunch of big names who used to say 'nah' are suddenly very interested.' It continues: Basically, removing the live element means 'celebs' don't have to stress about getting cancelled in real time and producers can flex a bit more control over the chaos. Think better editing, bigger stunts, and (hopefully) fewer awkward silences when someone gets booted. But then comes the big one, squarely taking aim at my reporting this change was made for budgetary reasons: And before anyone starts screaming 'budget cuts!', our sources are insisting this has nothing to do with Network Ten's upcoming Big Brother reboot stealing all the coins. 'If anything, this frees up resources to chase even bigger names,' the insider said. 'Think, international guests and proper A-listers, not just someone who got kicked off The Bachelor six years ago.' Why, then, did Channel 10 pre-record the finale this year, shooting three different versions and sending the entire production team home early? Obviously, that had nothing to do with budget! I can't wait to see Tom Cruise, Scarlett Johansson and other top tier talent take to the jungle in the next season, rather than a tragic bunch of nobodies. If 10 wants to change the narrative, then why not go on the record, confirm my reporting (which is correct) and make an official statement, rather than leaking to an outlet. At least we know they've already confirmed that McKnight was right! Media Watch hits out at Today It was interesting watching the hit job done by the ABC's Media Watch on Monday night against Channel 9's Today Show. The publicly funded broadcaster took issue with the fact the breakfast show dared into a commercial deal with UAE. Host Linton Besser wasn't happy with the show showing the positive tourist attractions of the country, rather than focusing on the negatives. 'The UAE is a repressive nation-state governed by an absolute monarchy whose arbitrary and fickle approach to justice and the law can create frightening risks for those who move there for work, like 28-year-old Emirates Airlines flight attendant Tori Towey, an Irish citizen who in June last year was strip searched and charged with attempting suicide after fleeing domestic violence' Besser said. All of that is true. But even though Besser declared Today had failed in 'spectacular fashion' in journalistic terms, he did have to acknowledge Nine did not hide anything from viewers. 'Despite the entire outside broadcast being funded by UAE government-backed businesses, which Nine did disclose, a spokesman for the media company told us the 'event TV' project had not been vetted by the foreign government'. OK, so what exactly is the problem here? Breakfast shows have always been a mix of news and entertainment. Sunrise certainly turned the format on its head in the 2000s when it introduced 'newstainsment' and became the number one breakfast show – a position which is still in place today. Commercial arrangements are a part of breakfast TV and there is no issue as long as those deals are made clear to the audience. Media Watch did not challenge Nine's position that the deal with UAE was disclosed. Nine and Today have never been shy about reporting on the atrocities that have taken place in the region and I don't believe this short-term deal will change that. So, Media Watch – which does not rely on commercial deals thanks to the $1.1 billion of government funding the ABC receives each year from taxpayers – thinks the show should have refused the money or done a big expose. Let's live in the real world. Commercial broadcasters are doing it tough and deals like this help them to survive. If a big story about the UAE had broken and the Today Show hadn't covered it, then Media Watch should rightly call them out. But that didn't happen. Instead, what we have here is an elitist attitude from a government-funded entity that doesn't rely on revenue to survive.
