Oklahoma eyes 5th straight national title at Women's College World Series
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma could extend its record run of consecutive national titles to five at this year's Women's College World Series.
Patty Gasso's second-seeded Sooners will face No. 7 seed Tennessee in their WCWS opener.
Oklahoma beat Alabama on Saturday
to win the Norman Super Regional.
Action in the
eight-team double-elimination bracket
begins Thursday at Devon Park. The final two teams will play for the title in a best-of-three series starting June 4.
Gasso, who will coach the United States at the 2028 Summer Olympics, has led the Sooners to eight national titles, including six of the past eight and seven of 10. This was Oklahoma's first season as a member of the Southeastern Conference.
In other opening-day matchups, third-seeded Florida will play No. 6 seed Texas, No. 9 seed UCLA meets No. 16 seed Oregon and No. 12 seed Texas Tech will face unseeded Mississippi.
Oklahoma will face Tennessee star pitcher Karlyn Pickens, who
broke her NCAA record by throwing a 79.4 mph pitch
during Saturday's win over Nebraska. Pickens then shut out the Cornhuskers 1-0 on Sunday.
Nebraska's loss means Oklahoma won't be facing former Sooners pitcher Jordy Bahl, who transferred to her home-state Cornhuskers after being named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 World Series with Oklahoma.
Although No. 1 overall seed Texas A&M was knocked out in regional play, the SEC has five teams in the field — Oklahoma, Tennessee, Florida, Texas and Ole Miss.
Florida beat Georgia in three games to advance. The Gators won national titles in 2014 and 2015 and lost to Oklahoma in the semifinals last year.
Texas has reached the best-of-three championship series in two of the past three seasons, with both losses coming to Oklahoma. The Longhorns are also in their first season in the SEC.
Texas Tech and Ole Miss are first-time qualifiers.
Texas Tech beat host Florida State in a super regional. Pitcher NiJaree Canady, last year's USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, led Stanford to the national semifinals two straight years before transferring to Tech. She led the Red Raiders to their first Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles.
Ole Miss is the only unseeded team remaining. The Rebels beat Arizona twice to win the Tucson Regional and beat Arkansas in super regionals.
UCLA and Oregon will meet in a matchup of former Pac-12 teams that moved to the Big Ten this year.
Oregon, the Big Ten regular-season champion, defeated upstart Liberty to advance. Liberty stunned Texas A&M in regional play, but couldn't get past the Ducks.
UCLA was down to its last out against South Carolina in Game 2 before winning, then took Game 3. The Bruins could add to their record 12 World Series titles.

Advertisement Elsewhere in the Super Regionals, Arkansas has a 1-0 lead over defending national champion Tennessee and winning on Sunday would send them to Omaha. LSU also won its opener versus West Virginia, as did Duke over Murray State and UCLA versus UTSA. Coastal Carolina was the first to team to qualify for the MCWS by finishing a sweep of Auburn on Saturday. UCLA 7, UTSA 0 The Bruins are returning to the Men's College World Series for the first time since 2013, when they won the national championship. UCLA finished off a sweep of UTSA in Los Angeles with a 7-0 win. RBI singles by Toussaint Bythewood in the fourth inning and Roch Cholowsky in the fifth gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. The Bruins wouldn't need any more offense than that, but added two runs in the eighth when AJ Salgado scored on a throwing error by Roadrunners catcher Lorenzo Morresi followed by a sacrifice fly from Phoenix Call. UCLA tacked on three additional runs in the ninth on a 2-run single by Payton Brennan and RBI groundout from Bythewood. Arkansas 11, Tennessee 4 The Volunteers will not repeat as national champions after being swept in the Fayetteville Super Regional by the host Razorbacks. After losing Saturday's opener, 4-3, Tennessee felt apart with its season and a return trip to Omaha at stake. Arkansas opened up a 7-1 lead with a five-run fourth inning. Logan Maxwell hit a grand slam off AJ Russell, the Vols' third pitcher of the inning. The Razorbacks loaded the bases on singles by Cam Kozeal and Reese Robinett, followed by an intentional walk to Charles Davalan to set up a force play. But Tennessee pitcher Liam Doyle allowed a run to score on a wild pitch and Brayden Krenzel hit Wehiwa Aloy with a pitch to load the bases again for Maxwell's big blow. Advertisement Loading the bases got the Vols in trouble again in the seventh. After a RBI double from Kuhio Aloy, Tennessee pitchers walked four consecutive batters, resulting in another two runs. Tommy Splaine first scored on a bunt single from Easton Breyfogle. Brendan Summerhill then walked to load the bases and Mason White drove in two runs with a single. A 3-run homer by Jackson Van De Brake gave North Carolina a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, following consecutive singles from Carter French and Kane Kepley. Arizona starter Smith Bailey was charged with those three runs with five hits allowed, four strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Murray State 19, Duke 9 The Racers rebounded decisively after losing Saturday's Super Regionals opener to Duke, 7-4. Dom Decker and Will Vierling each drove in four runs, while Dan Tauken had three RBI to send the series to a decisive Game 3 on Monday. Duke took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back homers by AJ Gracia and Ben Miller, but Murray State answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs beginning with Jonathan Hogart's leadoff home run. Both teams eventually traded five-run innings, but the Racers blew the game open with a nine-run seventh. Arkansas baseball defeats Tennessee to win 2025 Fayetteville Super Regional No. 3 national seed Arkansas (48-13) defeated No. 14 national seed Tennessee (46-19), 11-4, Sunday in the Fayetteville Regional of the 2025 NCAA Tournament at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas. With the victory, the Razorbacks advance to the College World Series for the first time since 2022, and ended Tennessee's season. Arkansas scored first after Charles Davalan hit a two-run home run in the third inning. The Vols also scored in the third inning. Cannon Peebles scored after Gavin Kilen grounded into a double play. The Razorbacks scored five runs in the fourth inning and would add three more runs in the seventh inning. Arkansas also scored one run in the ninth inning. Peebles and Kilen both went 1-for-3. In his final game for the Vols, senior center fielder Hunter Ensley went 1-for-3 and scored one run, while Andrew Fischer went 1-for-3. He also recorded one walk and reached base in all of Tennessee's 65 games this season. Liam Doyle (10-4) started for the Vols. He pitched 3.2 innings and allowed five runs, five hits and two walks. Doyle recorded six strikeouts, while totaling 73 pitches, including 43 strikes. Brayden Krenzel appeared in relief in the fourth inning. AJ Russell replaced Kenzel. Sports Seriously For the first time since the USFL returned to play in 2022, the Birmingham Stallions will not be playing for a spring football championship. The Michigan Panthers beat the Stallions in a 44-29 shootout at the 2025 USFL conference championship game. The win marked Michigan's first over Birmingham since the 2022 USFL season and was also the Stallions' first-ever playoff loss under Skip Holtz during four combined seasons in the USFL and UFL. "This was a complete team effort," Panthers coach Mike Nolan said on the ABC broadcast after the win. "The players played their hearts out." The Stallions struggled to stop Michigan's offense throughout Sunday's matchup. The Panthers racked up 371 total yards while getting dominant performances from quarterback Bryce Perkins and running back Toa Taua. Perkins made plenty of plays both through the air and on the ground. Notably, he hit Malik Turner in stride to create a 76-yard touchdown reception and also had an impressive, 29-yard scamper on a third-and-18 to keep alive a critical Panthers touchdown drive. Meanwhile, the Panthers leaned on Taua throughout the game. The tough, downhill runner posted 85 rushing yards and scored three times, including a key fourth-quarter touchdown run that extended Michigan's lead to 12 points after a run of 12 consecutive Birmingham points cut Michigan's lead to 5. While Holtz's Stallions did what they could to stay in the game, turnovers ultimately killed their offense's chances of competing. Starting quarterback J'Mar Smith was benched after throwing a pick-six to Kai Nacua that allowed Michigan to take a lead into halftime. Matt Corral performed better after replacing Smith. However, he had two key, fourth-quarter turnovers that ended Birmingham's chances of pulling off the 17-point comeback and brought to an end the Stallions' streak of three consecutive spring league titles. As for the Panthers, they snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Stallions and will now advance to the UFL championship game for the first time. Nolan is happy to celebrate the victory, but the veteran coach knows it will take another strong performance to beat the winner of the XFL conference championship between the St. Louis Battlehawks and DC Defenders.
