California Pizza Kitchen is turning 40 and an actress who's shared a "lifelong partnership" with the restaurant chain is helping the brand come to terms with its age.
Busy Philipps, known as Kim Kelly in the 1990s drama series "Freaks and Geeks" and Karen in the 2004 comedy "White Chicks," is California Pizza Kitchen's spokesperson for the brand's 40th anniversary. Philipps began working as a hostess at California Pizza Kitchen in Arizona in high school − around 16 or 17 − and has had a soft spot for the chain ever since her younger years growing up in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale.
"I've been stalking California Pizza Kitchen for years, trying to see if they're ever going to do any kind of campaign − 'Can I be a part of it because I love them so much?'" Philipps told USA TODAY.
California Pizza Kitchen's 40th anniversary campaign launched on Monday, when the chain began posting rebranded content, featuring dark colors, a chrome palm tree and the tagline: "Fresh. To. Death." In a promotional video shared on Thursday, the 45-year-old Philipps comes in to "save" the California Pizza Kitchen from its rebrand disaster and remind the chain that it's OK to be 40. Miley Cyrus celebrates 'intense energy' of 'Something Beautiful' film premiere

NEW YORK – Miley Cyrus swanned onto the red carpet in a sheer beaded dress accentuated by a cream-colored acre of luxurious strands. She gathered the crew who supported her in making her 'Something Beautiful' visual album, as all, including mom Tish, turned toward the cameras. 'Everybody say 'dysfunctional!'' Cyrus yelled, beaming. The quip was indicative of Cyrus' playful mood as she arrived at the Beacon Theatre June 6 to premiere the stylish, near-hourlong film companion to the 'Something Beautiful' album that bowed May 30. The debut at the Tribeca Film Festival prefaces the June 12, one-day-only appearance the film will make in theaters nationwide. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. Cyrus is the biggest contemporary pop star unveiling a film at this year's festival, which runs through June 15, and the sold-out theater full of devotees who loudly sang along with her new material emphasized the prestige moment. 'There is a very intense amount of energy we're sharing in this room,' she said during a post-screening chat with the audience, which included a Cyrus-led singalong of her 2009 hit, 'The Climb.' Intensity reigned throughout the 13 clips, with Cyrus donning fashion both sophisticated and sleek, dancing in fishnets and dispatching an industrial wind machine for added visual zip. She's the Pied Piper of feral emotions, slightly dangerous but a lot of fun, her penetrating gaze daring you to see what awaits. 'There's nothing more beautiful on the planet than deep emotion,' Cyrus said during her talkback. The 'Something Beautiful' record is inspired by Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' – a concept album connected to special memories with one of her brothers, she tells USA TODAY on the red carpet – and Cyrus' videos unfold with a loose connection that is all about feeling, much like the most memorable selections in the concept album annals. There isn't any filler in Cyrus' album or visual companion, which she said took about two weeks to shoot, and from the pink clouds and sunsets of "Golden Burning Sun" to the blue-gray shading of the Madonna-esque "Reborn," creativity dominates. These are the standouts. 'More to Lose' As the sparkly pop bounce of 'End of the World' fades into a screen of white light, a close-up image of Cyrus comes into view. The beaded headwear is the focal point until the camera pushes in even closer to Cyrus' perfectly shaded cheekbones, a most intimate angle for a most intimate song. 'Walk of Fame' The most compelling track on an album full of soaring choruses now has an equally absorbing video. In a world of neon, glitter and stiletto boots, Cyrus writhes against walls and struts down sidewalks, notably the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The song is an irresistible club banger with a throbbing chorus and Cyrus adeptly matches the mood of seedy and glam. She is visually arresting as she rolls around the ground, her eyes never losing the camera. Cuts to song guest Brittany Howard as she vocalizes add a flourish of drama, but nothing extra is needed with Cyrus as the subject. The clip was filmed at 2 a.m. on a street that hadn't seen much cleanup – 'We had everything we needed … besides a broom,' she joked at the screening – and consequently led to Cyrus contracting an infection. 'Every Girl You've Ever Loved' Cyrus strides through empty rooms followed by the galloping beat of the song. She cuts a powerful image singing in the shadows of her favorite toy, the industrial fan, while showcasing staccato movements. But her steely gaze betrays a mischievous flicker. Then model Naomi Campbell arrives for her feature on the song and she and Cyrus engage in a sexy-tough duet. The 'pose' coda of the song is set to the pair romping in black bodices and fishnets, exchanging piercing stares and strutting off together in mutual laughter ‒ girl power exemplified.

'Love Island USA' star Yulissa Escobar apologizes after sudden exit over racial slur

'Love Island USA' star Yulissa Escobar apologizes after sudden exit over racial slur Show Caption Hide Caption 'Love Island USA' host Ariana Madix on if she watches 'The Valley' "Love Island USA" host Ariana Madix explains to USA TODAY's Ralphie Aversa what it would take to get her back on Bravo reality TV show. Days after Yulissa Escobar unceremoniously left the "Love Island USA" villa, she has issued an apology for the online controversy that preceded her sudden departure. Before the show's seventh season premiered June 3, fans of the show were in an uproar over resurfaced clips of her using a racial epithet on a podcast. But the 27-year-old Miami businesswoman had presumably already lost access to her phone during production in Fiji. Her exit was briefly mentioned in voiceover narration during the second episode on June 4. Now off the Peacock show, Escobar has addressed the social-media frenzy over her resurfaced comments. "First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using. Podcast clips from years ago have recently resurfaced, and I want to address it directly," Escobar wrote in the caption of a June 6 Instagram post. "In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur. I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it. I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use." Escobar continued to explain, "I was speaking casually in conversation, not thinking deeply or critically about what I was saying. But that doesn't take away from how wrong it was. The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment." She said she has "changed a lot since then" and acknowledged, "Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability." She denounced statements from others that "don't reflect me or my heart" and shared, "I'm choosing to speak for myself because I take full ownership of my actions." Escobar ended the post with contrition, writing, "To those who are disappointed or offended, I understand and I apologize. I am sorry." Peacock has not responded to USA TODAY's request for comment on Escobar's departure. The show's only on-air acknowledgement that Escobar was no longer on the show was Iain Stirling mentioning around 20 minutes into Episode 2, "Yulissa has left the villa." 'Love Island USA' complete guide: New to the show? Here's the must-know terminology Which contestants have been kicked off 'Love Island?' Over the years, a few Islanders have unceremoniously disappeared from the show, only to later emerge on social media with claims as to why they were no longer on screen. The show seldom issues an explanation through official channels. Some of these contestants who suddenly stopped appearing on the reality show included Season 2's Noah Purvis, Season 3's Leslie Golden and Season 4's Kyle Fraser. There have also been emotional departures over the previous six seasons, such as when Day 1 islander Josh Goldstein left the villa with then-partner Shannon St. Claire after his sister died.
