The United States is set to launch one of its secretive space planes later this month, as the Pentagon races to maintain its space dominance while its adversaries rapidly close the gap.
The spacecraft, known as the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV), is a dynamic space platform dedicated to technology experimentation, with every mission providing continuous opportunities for learning, a Department of the Air Force spokesperson told Newsweek.
By testing new technologies in orbit, the X-37B helps the U.S. better protect its interests in space and be prepared to fight and win if adversaries Russia and China choose to engage in conflict, Hudson Institute senior fellow Rebeccah L. Heinrichs said.
Newsweek reached out to the Russian and Chinese foreign ministries for comment via email.
Why It Matters
Russia and China, quasi-allies under their "no limits" strategic partnership, have developed technologies that could threaten the U.S.'s interests in space, including satellites designed to disrupt or damage orbital assets and, reportedly, a space-based nuclear weapon.
In its defense space strategy, the U.S. describes both adversaries as the "greatest strategic threats" as they develop, test, and deploy counterspace capabilities. In response to these challenges, the Space Force was established during the first Trump administration in 2019.

The X-37B, which resembles the retired space shuttles, is an experimental test program designed to demonstrate technologies for a reliable, reusable, unmanned space platform.
Boeing has built two spacecraft, each measuring 29 feet long and weighing 11,000 pounds. Since its first launch in 2010, the fleet has traveled more than 1.3 billion miles and spent over 4,000 days in orbit across seven missions, with the longest mission lasting 908 days.
The Pentagon has rarely disclosed details of each X-37B mission, particularly the payloads, as it has been intentional about keeping those concealed since its inception, Heinrichs said.

The Upcoming Mission
In partnership with the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, the eighth X-37B mission, or OTV-8, is scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on August 21, the Space Force announced. The spacecraft will be carried aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
The mission will include operational demonstrations and experiments comprising what the Space Force described in a press release as "next-generation technologies," including laser communications and the highest-performing quantum inertial sensor ever tested in space.
Laser communication technologies help enhance the resilience of America's civil and national security space architectures by providing "faster, more reliable, and more resilient" space data transmission capabilities, the Department of the Air Force spokesperson said.
The quantum inertial sensor will enable accurate unaided navigation in space by detecting the rotation and acceleration of atoms without relying on satellites like traditional GPS.
The Space Force said this technology is useful for navigation in "GPS-denied environments" and, consequently, will enhance the navigational resilience of U.S. spacecraft in the face of current and emerging threats, as well as advance long-distance space travel and exploration.

It will be fascinating to see if the U.S. will reveal aspects of the X-37B program to signal to Russia and China what it is capable of with the intent of bolstering deterrence and if any of the technologies the program has helped develop may be leveraged for the Golden Dome missile defense shield, which would mark the first time the U.S. deploys weapons in space, according to Heinrichs.

Ford's New Assembly Line Design is Key to Lowering Vehicle Costs

Ford tore up the moving assembly line concept and designed a better one, the company's CEO Jim Farley explained to a crowd gathered at Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky for Ford's announcement that a new, lower-cost electric truck is coming to market in 2027. "One of the first things we did was bring in manufacturing expertise directly from our teams in Dearborn. That was incredibly important [it] set the baseline of what the architecture of the products would be off the platform. [It is a] marriage of both worlds, in terms of the expertise of 122-year-old company with massive capabilities and supply chain and industrialization in general," Alan Clarke, Ford's executive director of advanced EV development, told Newsweek. "[It] was really important to not only engage early, but also ensure that the ideas were able to fail fast. That's a startup mentality. When you're moving quickly, you want to really quickly determine: Is this actually more efficient? Does it actually save us money? Do we still deliver what we need to the customer in order to effectively make the product?" he said. The formula for the new assembly line structure, the Ford Universal EV Production System, starts with the new Ford Universal EV Platform. That platform underpins future battery-electric vehicles and is the result of a California-based skunkworks operation that was designed and enabled to break Ford's timeline, agility and product development norms. Ford Motor Company Instead of a traditional snaking assembly line structure, Ford's Louisville plant, which expanded 52,000 square feet as part of the effort, will feature an "assembly tree." That tree will include three sub-assemblies that run down their own separate assembly lines in unison, then join together at the end. "There's been a lot of work in the last three years on AI, on plants, and we're doing that and putting that into the system too. You've seen some of that already, but then we've also taken to this new platform, what we're able to do and add to that. So again, it's a win, win on both sides," a Ford spokesperson said. As part of the vehicle building shift, single-piece aluminum unicastings will replace dozens of smaller parts. This will allow the front and rear of the vehicle to be assembled separately. Additionally, less parts means fewer opportunities for failures that result in recalls, a business element that Ford has continuously struggled with during Farley's tenure, costing the company billions. "Elegant, simple designs are ultimately what enable low-cost: deletion of parts, deletion of process.... There's a lot of innovation of powertrain, in how we put the whole product together," the spokesperson said. Under the new assembly plan, Ford's assembly line workers on the third branch of the line put together the battery, seats, consoles and carpeting. Parts travel down the assembly tree to operators, further simplifying operations, in kit form with all fasteners, scanners and power tools included, in the order in which they are intended to be used. The team has further optimized the assembly line and order of operations for building the vehicle to improve the ergonomics for employees, reducing twisting, reaching and bending. Ford estimates that this new way of assembling vehicles will be 40 percent faster than the current assembly time of the Ford Escape. Some of that time, Ford says, will be yielded back to the company for other tasks, with an ultimate net speed improvement of 15 percent. It takes 20 hours to build one Ford Escape today.

With just a splash of color, the red planet's horizons can look remarkably like our own – blue skies and all. A 360-degree panorama, taken by the Perseverance Rover on Mars, could just as easily have been snapped in a rocky desert somewhere here on Earth. The difference lies in a subtle tweak to the color contrast. The hope is that one day, these new-and-improved rovers will join Perseverance, Opportunity, and Curiosity on Mars to accomplish similar feats. But seeing the red planet through an Earthly lens is like wearing rose-tinted glasses. It sure looks promising, but as you can see from the natural-color version of the image, there's a lot that sets Mars apart from the Atacama. As the fourth planet from the Sun, Mars receives less than half of the sunlight that Earth does, and the volume of its atmosphere is less than 1 percent of that of Earth's atmosphere. Whether remnants of ancient life can exist under such hostile and destructive conditions remains to be seen… possibly with Percy's own two eyes. President Donald Trump defended his controversial deal requiring Nvidia and AMD to fork over 15% of their China sales revenue to the US government to skirt export controls — insisting the computer chips involved are outdated technology. 'No, this is an old chip that China already has,' Trump said Monday, referring to Nvidia's H20 processor, adding that 'China already has it in a different form, different name, but they have it.'
