Lorde's Huge Week On The Rock Charts: What It Means For Her Career

Forbes19 hours ago
Every song from Lorde's Virgin lands on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, with eight new ... More debuts led by 'Shapeshifter' at No. 13. GLASTONBURY, ENGLAND - JUNE 27: Lorde performs during day three of Glastonbury festival 2025 at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 27, 2025 in Glastonbury, England. Established by Michael Eavis in 1970, Glastonbury has grown into the UK's largest music festival, drawing over 200,000 fans to enjoy performances across more than 100 stages. In 2026, the festival will take a fallow year, a planned pause to allow the Worthy Farm site time to rest and recover. (Photo by Joseph Okpako/WireImage)
Lorde's new full-length album Virgin has turned out to be another big commercial success for the singer-songwriter. The project, her first in several years, debuts inside the top 10 on every Billboard chart it appears on and even manages to lead several tallies.
Virgin owes its impressive debut, at least partially, to strong streaming numbers, with millions of plays on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and others helping Lorde significantly increase her career total number of hits on one Billboard tally.
Every Track From Virgin Charts on Rock Tally
All 11 tracks featured on Virgin appear on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, the primary list of the most popular rock titles in the United States. Eight of them debut this week, while previously-released cuts 'What Was That' and 'Man of the Year' settle at Nos. 11 and 20, respectively.
With these new wins, Lorde has now racked up 38 total hits on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. More than one-fifth of those arrive this week alone, which means this is a very exciting and busy frame for her.
'Shapeshifter' Leads Lorde's New Entries
All of Lorde's latest entries from Virgin start inside the top 40, quickly establishing themselves as at least minor hits. Leading the charge is 'Shapeshifter,' which opens at No. 13. Seven more brand new tracks land close to one another, as 'Favorite Daughter,' 'Current Affairs,' 'David,' 'Broken Glass,' 'Clearblue,' 'If She Could See Me Now,' and 'GRWM' debut at Nos. 22, 26, 27, 28, 33, 35, and 37, respectively.
Several Virgin Tracks Chart on Multiple Lists
Some of the new cuts from Virgin appear on multiple Billboard rankings this frame. 'Shapeshifter,' 'Favorite Daughter,' and 'Current Affairs' all reach the Hot Alternative Songs chart, which only includes 25 slots.
'What Was That' remains the standout success from the set. The track is currently charting on eight different tallies simultaneously. It sits inside the top 10 on several of them and even reappears on highly competitive lists like the Billboard Global 200 and Hot 100.

What we know as MasterChef's John Torode addresses racist language claim

John Torode has identified himself as the person accused of using racist language in the MasterChef report. MasterChef production company Banijay UK commissioned law firm Lewis Silkin to do a report into the historic behaviour of presenter Gregg Wallace on the show. Wallace said he was "deeply sorry for any distress caused" and he "never set out to harm or humiliate" after the report found 45 out of 83 allegations were upheld. The "majority of the substantiated allegations against Mr Wallace related to inappropriate sexual language and humour", the report found. Wallace's return to MasterChef is "untenable", it concluded. There were two standalone allegations against other people that emerged in the report. MasterChef presenter Torode said there is an allegation that he made a remark using racist language in 2018 or 2019 and that he apologised immediately after. He added: "I do not believe that it happened." The Sun claimed Torode was asked to resign and to blame mental health, but he refused. The TV chef has been a presenter on MasterChef since 2005. BBC News reported that "BBC insiders distanced themselves from that claim" on Monday night. Yahoo UK has reached out to John Torode and BBC representatives for comment. Torode has said he is "shocked and saddened" by the allegation. In a statement, he wrote on Instagram on Monday night: "Following publication of the Executive Summary of the Investigation into Gregg Wallace while working on MasterChef, I am aware of speculation that I am one of the two other individuals against whom an allegation has been upheld. "For the sake of transparency, I can confirm that I am the individual who is alleged to have used racial language on one occasion. The allegation is that I did so sometime in 2018 or 2019 in a social situation, and that the person I was speaking with did not believe that it was intended in a malice way and that I apologised immediately afterwards. "I have absolutely no recollection of any of this and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence." BBC has yet to confirm whether Grace Dent will replace Wallace on the main MasterChef series. Dent was announced as Wallace's replacement on Celebrity MasterChef while he stepped aside for the investigation last year. Filming for the reality series has now wrapped, but it has yet to air on TV. She said: "I've been watching MasterChef since I was a girl sitting with my dad on the sofa. My whole family watches it. It's all about uncovering and championing talent – and to have ended up in this position, is more than a dream to me. "I'm so excited that I can't eat, which is severely detrimental to a restaurant critic. I feel very lucky to be stepping in for the next Celebrity MasterChef. I can't wait to meet the fresh celebrity faces for 2025." It also remains unknown whether Dent will step into the same role on MasterChef: The Professionals. In the wake of the MasterChef report, Wallace has said he is "deeply sorry for any distress caused" and that it was "never intended". He said, "For eight months, my family and I have lived under a cloud. Trial by media, fuelled by rumour and clickbait. "None of the serious allegations against me were upheld. I challenged the remaining issue of unwanted touching but have had to accept a difference in perception, and I am deeply sorry for any distress caused. It was never intended. "I'm relieved that the Banijay report fully recognises that my behaviour changed profoundly in 2018. Some of my humour and language missed the mark. I never set out to harm or humiliate. I always tried to bring warmth and support to MasterChef, on screen and off. "After nearly 20 years on the show, I now see that certain patterns, shaped by traits I've only recently begun to understand, may have been misread. I also accept that more could have been done, by others and by myself, to address concerns earlier.' "A late autism diagnosis has helped me understand how I communicate and how I'm perceived. I'm still learning." He added: "To those who've shown kindness, thank you. It mattered. This has been brutal. For a working-class man with a direct manner, modern broadcasting has become a dangerous place. I was the headline this time. But I won't be the last... "There will be more casualties if the BBC continues down this path, where protecting its legacy matters more than protecting people. For my part, with full legal support, I will consider my next move."

Prince Harry and King Charles' top aides secretly meet in bid to mend royal rift: report

As the rift between Prince Harry and King Charles lll continues to seemingly intensify, senior aides from both sides reportedly met in an effort to begin restoring the broken relationship. According to The Mail on Sunday, Meredith Maines — the Duke of Sussex's chief of staff and communications director — flew from Montecito, Calif. to London to meet with King Charles' communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae, on Wednesday. Liam Maguire, who oversees U.K. press for Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, was also present. "There's a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years," a source told The Mail. "There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about." The informal meeting was reportedly held at the Royal Over-Seas League, a private members' club. KING CHARLES, PRINCE HARRY'S PAINFUL FEUD 'DAMAGING' MONARCH'S REIGN AS GUTTED SON REMAINS FURIOUS: EXPERT The source said the meeting was only the "first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father, but at least it is a step in the right direction." "Everyone just wants to move on and move forward now. It was finally the right time for the two sides to talk," the source added. Fox News Digital has learned that Maines was in London to meet with the UK-based communications team, media, stakeholders and senior figures connected to the Duke's patronages. The visit was entirely routine and part of ongoing planning and engagement. KING CHARLES' RIFT WITH PRINCE HARRY DEEPENS AS QUEEN CAMILLA REFUSES TO INTERVENE: EXPERTS Representatives for Buckingham Palace and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. The peace summit comes weeks after Harry told the BBC that he'd "love reconciliation" with his family. "There's no point in continuing to fight anymore," he said. After their move to California, the couple began to air their grievances in interviews and documentaries. Harry's 2023 memoir, which detailed embarrassing revelations about the House of Windsor, only worsened tensions with his family. In televised interviews to promote the book , Harry accused his stepmother, Queen Camilla, of leaking private conversations to the media to burnish her own reputation. He accused members of the royal family of getting "into bed with the devil" to gain favorable tabloid coverage, singling out Camilla's efforts to rehabilitate her image with the public after her longtime affair with his father. "That made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press," Harry told CBS. "There was open willingness on both sides to trade information. And with a family built on hierarchy, and with her on the way to being queen consort, there was going to be people or bodies left in the street." LIKE WHAT YOU'RE READING? "It is well known that King Charles can become very upset and hot under the collar," said Pelham Turner. "Certainly, Charles is upset about remarks made … about Camilla. She has used the code of silence on the subject, similar to her own experiences while there were three in the marriage, as stated by Princess Diana." "The king and Prince William don't trust Harry and Meghan with any kind of confidential conversation," she said. Insiders told the outlet that William, in particular, "has shown no interest in extending an olive branch." Fox News Digital's Stephanie Nolasco and Ashley Papa contributed to this post.
