Epsom Derby 2025: the pin-stickers' guide
It may not attract the attention it once did but the Epsom Derby remains one of the biggest days on the racing calendar and this year's renewal of the iconic race shapes as an intriguing one. Will Aidan O'Brien win a record-extending 11th premier Classic? Will 2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court stay for Godolphin? Can Galway jockey Rossa Ryan add a Derby to a CV that already includes an Arc? How will supplemented French pair Midak and New Ground fare? Questions aplenty and while we'll only know the answers shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday, here's our horse-by-horse guide to the 246th Derby.

Made all when getting off the mark at the third time of asking at Chester last month but likely to be out of his depth in this company.

Shaped well when second in the Dante and going a furlong and a half further could bring about further improvement. Each-way claims.
3: Delacroix

Victorious in two Derby trials at Leopardstown and looks sure to stay the trip but the record of Dubawi colts in this Classic (0 from nine) is a niggling worry.

Second in a weak French Group 1 as a juvenile but a record of one win from seven starts doesn't inspire confidence.

Unraced at two, this supplemented French raider is unbeaten in three starts this season and looks an intriguing contender.

Another supplemented French challenger but could only manage third in two starts this season. Unlikely to land a meaningful blow.

Third in Lingfield Derby Trial behind two Ballydoyle colts not deemed good enough to make the trip to Epsom. Likely to struggle.

Fifth in the Dante, the Frankel colt should appreciate the step up in trip but may struggle to keep tabs on the leaders in the early part of the race.

Last of six at Lingfield last month and there's no logical reason why he should fare any better in this company.
13: Ruling Court

If the 2000 Guineas hero stays, he'll win as his Newmarket triumph is undoubtedly the strongest form on offer. That's a significant if though.
14: Sea Scout

Odds: 50-1
Ticks the track box having won at Epsom in April but saw his limitations exposed when eighth in the Dante last time out.

Got within a neck of Delacroix as a two-year-old and while his win at Salisbury last month proved little, he has better prospects than many here.

A Group 1 winner in France last season but was firmly put in his place by Delacroix at Leopardstown last month. Hard to fancy.

Winter favourite for this Classic but surrendered his unbeaten record when sixth in the Dante. Being drawn in stall 19 is a further negative.

Odds: 20-1
Ran a big race at a big price when fourth in the 2000 Guineas but it's hard to see his stamina lasting over four furlongs further.

Odds: 66-1
Unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old but could only manage seventh in the Dante last month. Little chance.
Darren Norris' verdict
History suggests opposing Team Ballydoyle in the Derby is an act of folly and it's easy to make a coherent case for Delacroix giving Aidan O'Brien a record-extending 11th win in the premier Classic. However, the Dubawi colt has looked more solid than spectacular in his Leopardstown wins so a chance is taken on PRIDE OF ARRAS landing the spoils for Arc-winning pair Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan. His lack of experience could be viewed as a negative but 2013 victor Ruler of The Word and 2022 hero Desert Crown had also only run twice before rocking up at Epsom and Pride Of Arras showed enough at York to suggest he has all the attributes required to become the 10th Dante winner since 1980 to go on to Derby glory. Should stamina prove Ruling Court's undoing, unbeaten French raider Midak can hit the frame at a decent price.

Ireland complete hat-trick of La Baule Nations Cup wins
For the third time in history, the Irish show jumping team emerged as winners of the five-star Nations Cup of France in La Baule. In a team that included a mixture of youth and experience, they were pushed all the way by Belgium, but it was the Irish who came out on top at the French seaside venue after a flawless display. Ireland arrived in La Baule on the back of a Nations Cup win last weekend in British Columbia and knew they would face an event tougher test in La Baule where a world class field had assembled. Wexford's Bertram Allen got Ireland off to the perfect start when he jumped clear as the first rider to enter the arena with 9-year-old gelding Qonquest De Rigo. Seamus Hughes Kennedy and ESI Rocky (ISH) were next to go, fresh from an impressive fourth-place finish in the Rolex Grand Prix of Rome a week earlier. They delivered a textbook clear to keep Ireland on a zero score. Tom Wachman with Tabasco De Toxandria Z then picked up 8 faults, but that could be discarded when anchor rider Cian O'Connor jumped clear with the 14-year-old gelding Bentley De Sury. That left Ireland on a zero score at the half-way stage and in a tie for the lead with Belgium. The second round saw Allen again jump clear, while Nicola Philippaerts matched the score for Belgium to keep the two nations out in front. Hughes Kennedy then added another Irish clear, and when 20-year-old Wachman also jumped clear second time out, Ireland were guaranteed to finish on a zero score without the need for Cian O'Connor to jump in the second round. With Peter Devos having one fence down in his second round, Belgium's final rider, Gilles Thomas, had to jump clear to force a jump-off with Ireland. Thomas picked up four faults at the second fence in what was an otherwise perfect round meaning Ireland were clear winners as the only team to finish on a zero score. Belgium finished second on four faults, while Brazil took third place on the podium with 8 faults.

Winning horse dies in Epsom tragedy as Kia Joorabchian suffers heartbreak
The Derby meeting got off to a heartbreaking start for football agent Kia Joorabchian when his winning two-year-old horse Norman's Cay suffered a fatal injury. Amo Racing, known for their big spending in racing, will bid for Derby glory on Saturday when 66-1 chance Tuscan Hill lines up in the £1.5million Epsom Classic. Joorabchian narrowly missed out on winning the race two years ago when King Of Steel claimed second place, and in 2021 when Mojo Star also finished as the runner-up. Norman's Cay had delivered a statement victory for Joorabchian's Amo Racing team in March by winning the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster, marking the first two-year-old race of the British Flat Turf season. The promising colt lined up on Friday for the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom, starting as an 11-1 chance with Amo's jockey David Egan aboard. His trainer, Richard Hannon, had been confident that he would run well beforehand, writing in his Unibet blog post: 'We deliberately decided to give him a break after winning the Brocklesby to allow him time to grow and fill out, and he has done really well. 'We were looking at going to Sandown last week, but it was plenty dry enough, and there's a bit of rain forecast on Friday, which we feel will help because he won at Doncaster on Good to Soft. We've won this race with some nice horses down the years, and hopefully this lad is up to that standard, at least.' Unfortunately, the race did not unfold as hoped for Norman's Cay. He was hampered early on in the race and, after recovering for a comeback with two furlongs left, tragically went wrong one furlong from the finish. He was taken to a horse ambulance and removed from the track for further assessment by vets, who discovered he had suffered a severe injury. An Epsom Downs Racecourse spokesperson said: 'Having sustained an injury in the closing stages of the second race on Ladies Day, Norman's Cay was taken back to the racecourse stables for further assessment by our expert veterinary team. 'In their assessment, it was concluded that the best course of action for the horse's welfare was for him to be humanely euthanised. Our heartfelt condolences are with Richard Hannon, his team and all at Amo Racing.' Amo Racing analyst Charlie Sutton shared his own tribute and commented: 'Very sad to lose Norman's Cay at Epsom today. He was very well cared for at Richard Hannon's during his short career and again by the vets at the track. Can talk about what a nice horse he could've been for the team but ability is irrelevant in these circumstances really.'

Five Derby horses who will love soft ground with ‘a hell of a lot of rain' set to hit Epsom ahead of £1.5m race

And the colossal fee paid to get him in the race - and run under the famous Aga Khan silks - could prove money well spent. 3 Tennessee Stud Advertisement His odds have plummeted from 66-1 to 33s and it is easy to see why given the forecast. He brings strong form to the table having been beaten by the likes of Delacroix, Green Storm and Hotazhell. While he was a Group 1 winner on heavy at Saint-Cloud in France last October. 4 New Ground Advertisement Getting into the really big prices at 50-1, this French raider was a winner on heavy last October. He has been campaigned at a higher level since and come up short - but maybe ultra soft ground is what he needs. His sire won a French Derby on heavy so there is certainly hope. 5 Green Storm Advertisement If Tennessee Stud is a play, then 200-1 outsider Green Storm has to be as well. Owned by Ahmad Al Shaikh, a genius owner who seemingly always gets a big-price fancy in the frame at the Derby - Hoo Ya Mal at 150-1 was the standout - he screams stamina. Al Shaikh is obsessed with winning the Derby and while this would be the mother of all shocks, a small punt each-way could prove the prudent play.
