Heavy rain and flash floods batter US east coast with emergency declared in New York
A total of almost 50 million people in the US are under flood watches, and states of emergency have been declared in New Jersey and New York City, with state workers being sent home early.
Airports in NYC, New Jersey and Philadelphia all reported significant flight delays and cancellations as the severe weather arrived on Thursday.
Flights leaving all three of New York's largest airports are delayed, and all inbound flights are being held until conditions improve, Sky's US partner NBC News reports.
Planes have also been grounded at airports in Washington DC and Baltimore, Maryland.
A major highway in the New York borough of Queens was closed in both directions, with traffic cameras and social media posts showing vehicles stranded in deep water.
Officials in New York have warned that heavy rain could also flood parts of the subway and basements.
People living in basements have been urged to move to higher floors and New Yorkers are being asked to avoid travel until Friday afternoon.
The commuter rail system into suburban Long Island suspended trains on one of its busiest lines as officials pleaded with people to stay at home.
"Stay home this evening unless it's absolutely necessary for you to go out," Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman told Long Island residents.

Tornado warnings were also in place in New Jersey, and while no twisters were reported, more than 6,000 electricity customers have been left without power.
In some parts of Pennsylvania, National Weather Service warnings said there could be up to three inches of rain in just one hour, and a downpour flooded the streets of Reading.
Up to four inches of rain have fallen in parts of Maryland and Washington DC, and the heavy rain is continuing, NBC reports.
Flood and severe thunderstorm watches are in effect for parts of Pennsylvania until Friday, with four to six inches of rain possible in some areas.

Desperate search is launched for missing woman after she was swept away in floodwaters while in a car
Rescue workers are searching for a woman after the car she was a passenger in was swept away in floodwaters. Emergency workers were called north of Cessnock in the Hunter region of NSW following reports a Mini car was grounded due to the floods about 8pm on Saturday. The driver, a 27-year-old woman, managed to get out but the passenger, in her mid-20s, was dragged away with the strong current. A search for the woman was suspended overnight and resumed on Sunday morning. Meanwhile, State Emergency Service (SES) crews responding to the emergency managed to save a 40-year-old man who was stuck in a nearby tree due to floodwater. The man was swept out of the tree but rescuers followed him in the water and managed to pull him to shore, and he was taken to hospital. Both sides of the nation are facing wild weather, with high winds and storms expected in Western Australia and soggy conditions and flooding continuing for northern NSW. Tens of thousands of households in the eastern state spent a night without power as heavy rain, floods and unprecedented snow wreaked havoc. The SES has responded to more than 1455 call-outs related to rain, thunderstorms and snow. Residents in some parts of Taree on the mid north coast have been asked to evacuate due to flooding, while warnings are in place for the Peel and Namoi Rivers at Tamworth, Manilla and Gunnedah. Armidale and Guyra in New England had unprecedented snowfall and SES crews responded to more than 100 trapped cars. A new low-pressure system is expected to push up the NSW coast on Sunday, but conditions are likely to ease by afternoon, the Bureau of Meteorology said. Elsewhere, the bureau has issued a severe weather warning as a cold front moves through WA on Sunday, with damaging winds expected across the state's southwest, affecting Perth, Albany, Bunbury, Margaret River and the goldfields. 'Most of these damaging wind gusts will be driven by showers and thunderstorms,' meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said. Authorities warn surfers, fishers, swimmers and boating enthusiasts to stay clear of the coast amid dangerous swells. People have been urged to stay at least eight metres away from fallen power lines, power poles and damaged electricity equipment. Lightning temporarily forced the Wallabies and British and Irish Lions to seek cover during Saturday night's clash in Sydney, before the Australians managed to avoid a series whitewash. Much of the match was played in torrential rain, while lightning early in the second half forced a rare 38-minute stoppage as several hundred fans were forced to evacuate the stadium to take shelter.

Woman swept away in flood waters in Hunter region as emergency services respond to more than 1,450 incidents
A search is underway after a woman was swept into a flooded creek in the Hunter region overnight, as heavy downpours continue to batter large parts of northern New South Wales. Police said the car, a Mini, was being driven by a 27-year-old woman in Rothbury, near Cessnock, when it became stuck on Old North Road, through the swollen creek, just before 8pm on Saturday. The woman and a passenger, another woman in her 20s, attempted to flee the vehicle. The driver escaped but passenger was swept into the floodwaters, police say. When emergency services workers arrived, they also located a 40-year-old man stuck in a tree nearby, after he also apparently became trapped in the rising water. The man was swept back into the creek during a first attempted rescue by the State Emergency Service; he was eventually pulled from the water after rescuers tracked him along Black Creek. Police, emergency services, and firefighters expect to resume a search for the missing woman on Sunday. Warnings remain in place for several regions – including the Coffs Coast, Mid-North Coast, Upper Hunter and New England regions – after several days of heavy rain. Forecasters are warning that rain will continue and that parts of the Hunter and the north coast will be hit with potentially damaging winds. Power was cut to at least 27,500 homes in NSW, as snow was recorded in some parts of the state and even across the Queensland border. Between 50 and 100mm of rain drenched parts of Mid-North Coast and northern Hunter on Saturday. The NSW State Emergency Service said it responded to more than 1,450 incidents related to rainfall, thunderstorms and snow. The Bureau of Meteorology says a new low-pressure system is expected to push up the NSW coast on Sunday, but conditions are likely to ease by the afternoon. Residents in parts of Scone and Taree have been asked to evacuate amid a major flood threat. 'Most of these damaging wind gusts will be driven by showers and thunderstorms,' meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said. Authorities warn surfers, fishers, swimmers and boating enthusiasts to stay clear of the coast amid dangerous swells. - with AAP

She also posted snaps of red peppers drying on a rooftop in Ravello on Italy's Amalfi Coast. It comes as Harry is rumoured to have fallen in love with the small Italian village of Civita di Bagnoregio. The Watermelon Sugar hitmaker spent the pandemic learning Italian and sign language. During his final Love On Tour show in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 2023, Harry thanked 120,000 fans in Italian. Speaking in their language, he said: 'The last two years of my life have been a wonderful gift and it is truly very special to end my tour here, in a country that has a special place in my heart.' Harry Styles' mystery woman revealed after Glastonbury snog - and she's VERY different to the women he's dated before In June, the singer was seen sharing a passionate kiss with producer Ella Kenny at Glastonbury Festival. It came after his relationship with actress Taylor Russell ended in May last year. He was seen kissing model Emily Ratajkowski on a night out in 2023 and has previously dated model Kendall Jenner, singer Taylor Swift and actress Olivia Wilde. HEIDI READY FOR SUGA HIT ON TV 8 Heidi Range will recount her days in the pop group Sugababes Credit: Getty HEIDI RANGE is set to lift the lid on her tumultuous time in the Sugababes in explosive BBC documentary Girlbands Forever. The singer will sit down with interviewer Louis Theroux to recount her days in the pop group, which has had six members over the years, including the original (and current) line-up of Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy, as well as former members Jade Ewen and Amelle Berrabah. A source close to the project, which follows last year's Boybands Forever, said: 'Heidi has never spoken about what went on. 'Louis reached out to her directly and she finally agreed to take part a couple of weeks ago. It was an emotional interview and one that viewers will want to watch.' Last year, the Sugababes were handed a gong at the Mobo Awards, but Heidi's mum hit out after her daughter was 'white-washed' from the nomination video. She wrote on Instagram: 'I can't believe the cheek of it. Sugababes didn't have a hit till Heidi joined. It is so false and disrespectful the way they are carrying on.' Mutya hit back: 'When I wasn't in the group and the girls was doing big things without me, do you think I was getting upset about not being mentioned?' A spokesman for the original trio declined to comment. Forget the Suga – things might be about to turn very sour again. PUB JOB FOR SAM BEFORE rising to fame on Eurovision in 2022, Sam Ryder started out singing in boozers – and now he has been appointed Head of Gigs for Greene King Pubs to help support up-and-coming artists. Sam, who dropped new single The Feeling Never Went Away from his upcoming album Heartland on Friday, said: 'Pubs provided a place for me to actually learn how to play in front of people. 'Before the pub stage, you just played guitar in your bedroom as loud as it could go. 'At pubs, you got the chance to hone your craft and learn different songs, create a little catalogue, get the expertise of actually playing in front of people.' I couldn't agree more, Sam.
