Processing Scots waste abroad is tipping point, we should recycle here

Daily Record3 days ago
Record View says recycling is carried out in the name of the environment but the climate footprint of exporting waste must be huge.
Diverting waste away from landfill and boosting recycling rates are, undoubtedly, the correct courses of action. Climate change is the biggest catastrophe facing the world and all countries, big and small, must rise to the challenge.

Glasgow has historically had a poor record on recycling and has upped its game of late. The city's recycling rate for 2024 was 30.6 per cent, up from 27.2 per cent in 2023, modest progress.

But our story today on how Glasgow's domestic waste is being reprocessed abroad is a cause for alarm. This country's infrastructure is so poor that our largest city is sending waste to locations such as Spain and Germany.

We should be recycling our own waste and yet we are having to boost recycling rates by sending paper and plastic to the continent. Such an approach fails on multiple fronts.
Glasgow council has made huge cuts over the years but is shelling out millions to reprocess waste overseas. Recycling is carried out in the name of the environment but the climate footprint of exporting waste must be huge.

And supporting jobs in Spain inevitably means Scottish firms who could construct their own reprocessing plants are losing out. SNP politicians talk a good game about how climate change presents a great opportunity for creating the jobs of the future.
But this talk is cheap when those jobs are overseas. Scottish waste should be processed in Scotland and this woeful practice must end.

Legend's legacy
Sir Chris Hoy is already a hero to Scots for his sporting excellence and Olympic gold medal haul. But since being diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer he has taken on an even greater role in the life of our nation.
Working with his wife, Sarra, Chris is determined to save lives by making sure more men get checked for this disease. Caught early it can be treated and managed.
But as Sir Chris knows only too well, the disease can often go unnoticed and then becomes difficult and sometimes impossible to eradicate. That is why the cycling legend met with First Minister John Swinney and Health Secretary Neil Gray yesterday.
He wants GPs to proactively contact men known to be at higher risk – for instance, due to a family history of prostate cancer – to offer an early test.
That demand is reasonable, achievable and should be introduced as a matter of urgency. It will certainly save lives - and could be Chris's most enduring legacy.

The Shark SmoothStyle Heated Brush and Comb styles wet or dry hair with three temperature settings for a smooth, voluminous finish. It comes in a sleek silk white colour and features three adjustable air temperatures to suit different styling needs. Designed to dry, volumise, shape, and smooth, it works on wet hair without reaching heat-damaging temperatures and on dry hair to refresh styles or tame flyaways. The product weighs 730g and includes a UK plug with a 2-year guarantee upon registration within the UK and ROI. Shark SmoothStyle Heated Brush and Comb £99.99 £49.49 Amazon Shop Product Description The GHD RISE™ Hot Brush, while more expensive at £139.00 (reduced from £179.00), has earned a 4-star rating from 434 reviewers. Both offer similar benefits but differ in price and features. The Shark SmoothStyle carries a solid 4.3 out of 5 stars based on 545 customer reviews, reflecting a generally positive reception mixed with some critiques. One enthusiastic user shared, 'Shark Smooth Styler, wet to dry, in one word is just incredible. I have shoulder length hair and loads of it. I absolutely dread washing and blowdrying it, as it takes 35 mins on average to blow dry with a brush and hairdryer. So I thought I'd give this a go. It truly has revolutionised drying and styling my hair. Easy to use, and the result is amazing.' In contrast, a less positive review pointed out some issues: 'It's too heavy to hold and it is hard to get your hair straight. The brush is not round and the shape makes it difficult to roll out on the hair. If the hair is too curly, it won't do a good job.' Another satisfied buyer noted, 'Bought when my last hot brush died. It works well on my fine hair. I use low drier setting & it is enough for me. "What I really like is the smoothing part. It saves my using straighteners & I've used only this since buying it to do my full hair treatment and it leaves my hair shiny.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! On the downside, one user reported, 'I purchased this product 18 months ago. It has been excellent but the heating element on the smoothing function has failed. A friend of mine bought one after my recommendation in June last year and the same thing has happened to hers.' A final positive comment praised the product's salon-like results: 'Honestly the best hair tool I have hairdryer in this brush is as powerful as my salon hairdryer. "I will say it's a little heavier than other hot brushes but the quality is outstanding. I might get a glove for when I use the comb part as it does get hot. Overall gobsmacked!' For those interested in the Shark SmoothStyle Heated Brush and Comb, it is available to purchase on Amazon at the current discounted price.

Man Utd 'plan Carlos Baleba transfer talks' with first hurdle in massive deal cleared

Manchester United are still planning to pursue a move for Brighton's Carlos Baleba and are confident that personal terms for the midfielder wouldn't be an issue Manchester United believe that personal terms with Carlos Baleba will not be an issue with the player keen on the move - but it remains to be seen whether Brighton are open to selling. ‌ Last week those at Old Trafford made contact via intermediaries to gauge whether they could strike a deal for the Cameroon midfielder, who produced an impressive season at the Seagulls and is now attracting a number of admiring glances. ‌ Baleba is likely to cost around £100million - which is just shy of the figure Brighton demanded before they agreed to sell Moises Caicedo to Chelsea two summers ago. ‌ United do not currently have those kinds of sums and from the minute they expressed their interest there was an acceptance that securing the deal would be a huge challenge. They've spent more than £200m to sign the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo. Fabrizio Romano reports that those in Manchester will still attempt to pursue a deal but know that they may miss out. After landing Sesko's signing on Saturday Ruben Amorim's priority now is on adding a midfielder. Brighton have already sold Joao Pedro to Chelsea, banking up to £60m, and will be loathed to lose another of their major players whilst there is less need for them to cash in. Their chief executive Paul Barber has played down speculation that the Red Devils have even been in contact and underlined the fact that the Seagulls have no interest in selling more of their top players. He said: "We've got some great talent, there's always going to be interest in our players. Manchester United have not been in touch with me. From that point of view, speculation is speculation. "We will always try to make sure we sell our best players at the right time, not just for the player but for us. If we end up doing that with any player, it's with the view to leave Fabian with a competitive squad, whatever happens. We don't want to sell our best players. "Carlos is a fantastic talent who has a lot of years ahead of him. We hope he will be here for many years to come. But it's something that, as always, is subjective to the dynamics of the football world which isn't always predictable. High street chain launches huge 70% off closing down sales as three Scots branches set to shut

The Original Factory Shop is a discount department store chain which had over 180 branches across the UK. Customers can also pick up pet products, jewellery, drinks, perfume and footwear. However, bosses have pulled the shutters down at several shops across the country as part of huge restructuring plans. A total of 22 shops have closed or are set to shut this year across the UK after 10 closed for good last year. The closures come after The Original Factory Shop was taken over by Modella Capital earlier this year. The private equity firm, which is known for taking on struggling retailers, bought the retailer in February. It then quickly launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 of the retail chain's stores. Modella, which also recently acquired Hobbycraft and WHSmith's high street shops, drew up plans to initiate a Company Voluntary Arrangement in April. A CVA is a way of restructuring that means a business can continue trading while negotiating its debts, for example, by cutting rent costs with landlords. And bosses told the Press and Journal at the time that a "number of loss-making stores will have to close" as part of the CVA. Iconic Glasgow Cineworld that's world's tallest cinema building set to close as staff face axe They added: "Closing stores is always a tough decision and we are committed to keeping as many stores open as possible. "This is, however, dependent on successful negotiations with landlords as we strive to build a sustainable and successful business for the future." Four Scottish stores have already closed over the summer. Branches in Perth, Arbroath, in Angus, and Peterhead, in Aberdeenshire, all closed on June 28. The store in Cupar, Fife, soon followed and pulled the shutters down for the final time on July 27. Now bosses have revealed that stores based in Blairgowrie, Nairn and Kinross will also be closing down. However, it is currently unknown exactly when it will shut for good. Several other stores across the country are set to close this month, including one in Irkham, Lancashire, and another in Caldicot in Wales. Staff at the Caldicot branch announced the news of the closure in a Facebook post this week. And a closing-down sale was launched with discounts of up to 70 per cent off. Meanwhile, The Original Factory shop in Nairn announced the closure in a similar Facebook post.
