US Reaffirms Commitment to ASEAN Ahead of Malaysia's Key Regional Engagements

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The United States (US) has reaffirmed its firm support for ASEAN's central role in regional affairs and expressed readiness to work closely with Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair for 2025, ahead of a series of high-level ASEAN-related meetings to be hosted by the country later this year.
US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan said Washington remains deeply invested in its engagement with ASEAN and is committed to working closely with Malaysia, particularly in the context of its ASEAN Chairmanship.
'We expect to engage effectively in upcoming ASEAN-related engagements,' Kagan told reporters during a press conference at his residence on Friday.

The US has been an ASEAN Dialogue Partner since the bloc's founding in 1967 and has consistently supported its development.
Kagan emphasised that the US intends to engage at the appropriate level and acknowledged Malaysia's strong track record as an effective leader in ASEAN.
He praised Malaysia's longstanding and effective leadership within ASEAN, highlighting the country's consistent efforts in advancing the region's priorities and upholding the bloc's centrality.
Meanwhile, Kagan dismissed claims that Southeast Asian nations are shifting closer to Beijing following recent US tariffs and China's growing regional diplomacy, including President Xi Jinping's April visits to Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
'Countries in the region make their own decisions. They have long had strong ties with both the United States and China. We don't view those ties as mutually exclusive,' he said.
The ambassador pointed to the robust US-Malaysia economic relationship as proof of Washington's continued engagement in the region, citing Malaysia's significant export volume to the US and the presence of American companies as evidence of deepening economic ties.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The government has allocated RM53,100 this year for two welfare initiatives for part-time media practitioners -- the extension of the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) and contributions to the i-Saraan scheme under the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that of the total amount, RM37,170 was allocated for the extension of SKSPS coverage, which benefited 531 part-time media practitioners for a period of one year last year, while the remaining RM15,930 was for i-Saraan EPF contributions. He said the initiative was implemented through the synergy between the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Socso.

Media Industry Urges Govt Support Amid Digital Challenges
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to consider proactive measures to help the country's media industry, which is currently in a critical stage in facing major challenges. Utusan Borneo Sabah editor-in-chief Datuk Lichong Angkui said competition from social media and global digital platforms, declining advertising revenue and changing reading patterns of the people have caused media companies' income to shrink, while operating costs continue to rise. 'Proactive measures such as financial incentives, digital transformation grants and strategic collaborations could enable local media to remain relevant and competitive,' he said in his speech as a media representative at the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration here today. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics, the prestigious event will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Also present were Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, cum director of HAWANA 2025 Project, as well as top management of national media companies. Meanwhile, Lichong expressed his appreciation to the government and the Prime Minister for realising the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) after struggling for the council for decades. ''It is our hope that MMC will not only become a government monitoring body but more importantly a strong-rooted, independent and inclusive protector in preserving the integrity and freedom of the media in this country,' he said. He also thanked the government, especially the Ministry of Communications, for the initiative to establish the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA, which has so far helped hundreds of media practitioners, including those who have retired and those who are still working but are facing difficulties in life. 'This initiative proves the government's concern by taking into account the fact that, behind the sharpness of the journalist's pen, there is actually still room for compassion and empathy,' he said. Regarding the theme of HAWANA 2025, Lichong said it reflects the current reality of the world of journalism which is increasingly changing due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology which also raises questions of ethics, authenticity of information and social responsibility of journalists in assessing, filtering and presenting news. The HAWANA 2025 celebration is organised by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, with the aim of recognising the role and contribution of media practitioners in national development. May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players.

Thailand and Cambodia seek to ease simmering border tensions

The two neighbours share an 820-km (510-mile) land border, parts of which are undemarcated and include ancient temples that both sides have contested for decades. The latest standoff followed a brief skirmish on May 28 that left aCambodian soldier dead. "The Thai government hopes to use the platform to resolve the situation peacefully," Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra posted about the meeting on her Facebook page on Friday. The row comes at achallenging time for Thailand's government, which is losing popularity in prolonged struggle to spur economic growth. Paetongtarn's administration is under pressure to take a tougher stand on Cambodia, accompanied by initially strong rhetoric from the Thai military. Despite both countries pledging dialogue to handle the issue and to calm nationalistfervour, Bangkok has threatened to close the border and cut off electricity supplies to its neighbour. Phnom Penh announced it would cease buying Thai electric power, internet bandwidth and produce. It has also ordered local television stations not to screen Thai films. RESOLUTION UNLIKELY A resolution this weekend at the Joint Boundary Commission meeting in Phnom Penh is not expected, and it was unclear when the outcome would be announced. Cambodia is determined to file a case at the International Court of Justice to determine jurisdiction over four disputed areas, while Thailand insists on a bilateral solution. "Cambodia wants to settle the disputes at the ICJ, something that Thailand won't accept," said Dulyapak Preecharush, a Southeast Asian studies expert at Thammasat University in Bangkok. "So there's not much left to discuss at JBC apart from maintaining an atmosphere for further dialogue." Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Friday his country would not discuss the four contested areas at the boundary commission, adding the government would send an official letter to the ICJ on Sunday on its plan to file the case. Influential former strongman premier Hun Sen, Hun Manet's father, has criticised Thailand's military for restricting border crossings and has accused generals and Thai nationalists of fanning the tensions. "Only extremist groups and some military factions are behind these issues with Cambodia because, as usual, the Thai government is unable to control its military the way our country can," he said late on Thursday.
