They were convicted of the attempted possession of a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported cocaine. ABF officers found packages of white powder stuffed behind the rims of the performance wheels at the Perth cargo facility. The consignment was transferred to the AFP and forensic specialists found 56 packages of white powder, which contained 37.67kg of pure cocaine. The drugs were replaced before the tyres were delivered to a Nollamara home on 5 July, 2022. AFP acting Superintendent Chris Colley said drug traffickers were "motivated by greed and did not care about the harm they caused." (Supplied) The next day the couple used tools and knives to cut apart the car tyres to get the black plastic-wrapped packages of drugs inside. The father and son flew in from Sydney that week, collected the packages and headed to a hotel. They opened at least one of the plastic-wrapped blocks before dumping them all in a skip bin outside a shopping centre. The AFP arrested the pair, before searching the home. (Supplied) "This amount of cocaine had the potential to be sold as about 280,000 individual street deals of 0.2 grams and put about $18.2 million in the pockets of criminals," he said. ABF acting Superintendent Carmen Lee said "the skills and vigilance of ABF officers at the border ensured this dangerous cargo was stopped before it could reach Australian streets." "This outcome should act as a warning to anyone considering drug trafficking. Do not be blinded by greed, you will be found out and face serious jail time," a/Supt Lee said. drugs

UNSW PhD candidate Ali Alghamdi charged after police allegedly find 25,000 child abuse images on phone

A PhD candidate at a prestigious Australian university and father of two has been charged after police allegedly found more than 25,000 child abuse videos and images on his phone. Ali Alghamdi, a 35-year-old Saudi Arabian national, was arrested at the University of NSW's Randwick campus about 3pm on Monday. He was identified as a suspect in the online distribution, supply, and access of child abuse material after a strike force trawled the dark web in late 2022. Police allege that during a search of his phone, they located more than 25,000 videos and images of child abuse material, with 42 marked as 'favourites'. He was charged with using a carriage service to access child abuse material. The part-time Uber driver faced court on Tuesday, where it was revealed the alleged material was 'significantly depraved', involving children between the ages of two and four, as well as infants. The material was described as too graphic to be published. Commonwealth prosecutor Melanie Tam told the court Alghamdi denied knowing about the 42 favourited files and claimed he had obtained the content in order to report it to authorities, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. He allegedly stored child abuse content on encrypted messaging apps, and one of his three email accounts reportedly contained nearly 650 gigabytes of material. According to Alghamdi's LinkedIn and UNSW profile, he began a Master's degree in Optometry at UNSW in 2020, funded by a scholarship from the Saudi Ministry of Health. He then received the University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) scholarship to undertake a PhD in Optometry in 2022. Before coming to Australia, he completed his bachelor's degree in optometry at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia in 2014 and worked as an optometrist for three years at a general hospital there. The court heard his wife joined him in Sydney six weeks ago and currently lives in Waterloo. In a translated reply on Facebook, Alghamdi wrote to someone: 'May God protect your children, and may we see you in good health, God willing.' Magistrate Michael Barko refused bail, describing Alghamdi as an 'extreme' flight risk due to his student visa status. 'They searched devices which contained film which could only be said to be the most perturbing child sexual abuse,' he said. Alghamdi is due to return to court on September 23.

Man, 59, charged by AFP after allegedly assaulting cabin crew over bathroom dispute on Brisbane-bound plane

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting an airline crew member on a Brisbane-bound flight over an on-board toilet dispute. In a statement, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the man was charged after a response was made to the AFP for assistance on July 14. It is alleged the man, 59, refused instructions to take his seat by the flight crew as the flight, travelling from Perth Airport to Brisbane, was preparing for departure. The man allegedly wanted to use the bathroom and pushed a crew member. The incident was reported to the flight captain, who requested the AFP attend the gate and remove the man from the plane. AFP officers removed the man, who was allegedly uncooperative with police. He has been charged with one count of assaulting a crew member, contrary to section 318A of the Criminal Code (WA), which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment if convicted. The 59-year-old faced Perth Magistrates Court on July 29. AFP Inspector Peter Brindal said airline crew members worked to ensure a safe journey for all travellers and any aggressive or violent behaviour towards them was unacceptable. 'The AFP has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the assault or mistreatment of airline staff, and anyone who commits such an offence can be prosecuted,' Inspector Brindal said.
