Boca Juniors defender Costa gets special US visa for Club World Cup following earlier rejection

New Straits Times14 hours ago

Buenos Aires: Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa will be able to take part in the Club World Cup in the United States following a u-turn by U.S. immigration officials who had previously rejected his visa application, the Argentine club said yesterday.
"Ayrton Costa has been granted a 26-day special visa," a club spokesperson told Reuters.
Costa's visa application was subject to a criminal complaint in his native Argentina, relating to an aggravated robbery in 2018, which he avoided trial for by accepting a probationary sentence in 2023.
However, U.S. officials previously ruled that he could not enter the country as he was still serving his sentence.
The press office at the U.S. embassy in Argentina told Reuters that they cannot discuss individual visa applications.
Boca Juniors will open the tournament in Miami on Monday against Portuguese side Benfica.

Rugby-Fast start fires Leinster to United Rugby Championship title

(Reuters) -Three early tries helped Irish side Leinster to a comprehensive 32-7 victory over South Africa's Bulls in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final in Dublin on Saturday and a record-extending ninth title. The hosts were clinical with their early burst as the rain poured down, with number eight Jack Conan, centre Jordie Barrett and flanker Josh van der Flier crossing the line, before Fintan Gunne's late try finished off an outstanding display. The Pretoria-based Bulls have now lost three of the last four URC finals in another major disappointment, even if they were underdogs against a team packed with players in the British & Irish Lions squad travelling to Australia this month. Hooker Akker van der Merwe scored the visitors' only try as Leinster made up in part for their recent shock home semi-final defeat by Northampton Saints in the European Champions Cup. Motor racing-Norris fastest in final practice as Piastri hits the wall

Formula One F1 - Canadian Grand Prix - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Quebec, Canada - June 14, 2025 McLaren's Lando Norris during practice REUTERS/Jennifer Gauthier MONTREAL (Reuters) -Lando Norris lapped fastest in final Canadian Grand Prix practice on Saturday as Formula One leader and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri hit Montreal's wall of champions. Norris lapped the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in one minute 11.799 seconds, 0.078 quicker than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc who was back on track after crashing on Friday and missing second practice. The Briton had described the previous day's practice as McLaren's worst Friday of the season but appeared more comfortable in the last track time before qualifying. Mercedes' 2024 pole-sitter George Russell was third, 0.151 off the pace, with Ferrari's seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton fourth and 0.251 slower than Norris. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, chasing an unprecedented fourth successive Canadian win on Sunday, was fifth fastest with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso sixth. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli was seventh and Piastri eighth, with the Australian briefly triggering red flags when he skimmed the famed wall at the last corner and scattered debris with 37 minutes to go. The championship leader was able to get back out again with 24 minutes remaining. The Australian leads Norris by 10 points after nine of 24 rounds. Carlos Sainz was ninth fastest for Williams with teammate Alex Albon 10th. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by Ed Osmond)

Tennis-Battling Mertens saves 11 match points to reach Den Bosch final

FILE PHOTO: Tennis - Italian Open - Foro Italico, Rome, Italy - May 10, 2025 Belgium's Elise Mertens celebrates after winning her round of 32 match against Jessica Pegula of the U.S. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo 'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands (Reuters) -Belgian third seed Elise Mertens dug deep to save 11 match points and overcame two-time winner Ekaterina Alexandrova 2-6 7-6(7) 6-4 to reach the Libema Open final in Den Bosch on Saturday, where she will face Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Mertens, having lost the opening set, found herself 5-3 down in the second but battled back to force a tiebreak before seeing off the Russian second seed, with Alexandrova aiming to win her third title having triumphed in 2022 and 2023. "I didn't even know it was 11, after one or two I lost count," Mertens said. "I was very focused on the game, which, of course, I like that about me, that I just keep going. "It was a difficult match, I think she started really well, and it was 6-2, 5-3 for her. I just stayed with my head in the game and gave everything I had." Alexandrova won their only previous meeting in Den Bosch, back in 2019, and has reached at least the quarter-finals of the last five editions, but Mertens now has the chance to win a second title this year, after her Singapore triumph in February. Standing in Mertens' way will be Romanian qualifier Ruse who recovered from losing the first set to defeat Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 2-6 6-4 6-3. Mertens has won all three previous meetings with Ruse. (Reporting by Trevor Stynes, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
