Argentina beats Uruguay 1-0 in Copa America Femenina 2025; Ecuador wins 3-1 vs Peru

Argentina started its 2025 Copa América Femenina on a positive note, beating an outnumbered Uruguay 1-0 at the Ciudad Deportiva Independiente del Valle in Quito, Ecuador, on Tuesday.
The first half could barely separate the two sides, with the Albiceleste having a slight edge.
Florencia Bonsegundo had the best chance of the half when she caught the opposition goalkeeper out of position and she headed the ball on target, which was cleared off the line by Angela Gomez.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute, when Bonsegundo lobbed the ball off an assist from Agostina Holzheier, who had come off the bench 10 minutes earlier.
Uruguay's night went from bad to worse when Wendy Carballo was sent off, 10 minutes from time. In the next round, Argentina will play Chile, while Uruguay will look for a turnaround against Peru.
Both matches will be played on Friday.
Ecuador beats Peru 3-1
Later, Ecuador secured its first win in the Copa América Femenina by defeating Peru 3-1 at the Ciudad Deportiva Independiente del Valle.
Though Peru started the match aggressively, it was the hosts who struck first against the run of play. Nayely Bolanos combined with Emily Arias, with the latter finding the net off a low shot, her second strike of the tournament.
Bolanos doubled the lead, converting from the spot, after Danna Pesántez was fouled in the box.
Peru tried to come back into the game after the break: Karen Flores hit the post in the 52nd minute, and Raquel Bilcape had two shots inside the box just after the hour mark. But none could actually rattle the net.
Bilcape finally got her name on the scoresheet when she steered a low cross from Canales on the right side into the bottom corner of Andrea Morán's goal.
But Ligia Moreira's strike in stoppage time put the competition to bed with a 3-1 victory for the hosts.
With four points in two matches, Ecuador now leads Group A and will rest over the weekend before facing Chile next Monday, July 21. Peru, on the other hand, will face Uruguay on Friday (July 18) as both sides look for their first win in the tournament.

US women's national team knocked off top spot by Spain in FIFA's latest rankings

ZURICH: The U.S. was knocked off the top spot in FIFA's latest women's rankings by world champion Spain. Spain regained the No. 1 position despite losing to England in the final of the European Championship last month. The U.S. held the top position since August last year after winning gold at the Paris Olympics. Spain was No. 1 from December 2023 to June last year after its World Cup triumph. The latest rankings were released by world governing body FIFA on Thursday. England, which has won back-to-back Euros and lost to Spain in the final at the 2023 World Cup, moved up one place to fourth. Brazil dropped three positions and is seventh despite successfully defending the Copa America to win its ninth continental title. Sweden and France were big movers after impressive showings at the Euros. Sweden rose three places and is third after being eliminated on penalties by England in the quarterfinals. France moved up four places to sixth after also losing in the quarterfinals.

Fox beats quarterly estimates, boosts buyback by $5 billion

Fox Corp topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue and profit on Tuesday, driven by a surge in advertising, affiliate fee and continued growth at its free ad-supported streaming service, Tubi. The company also announced a $5 billion increase to its share repurchase authorization. The owner of Fox News saw revenue from affiliate fee rising 2.6% in the fiscal fourth quarter, driven by growth across both its cable and television segments. Fox has benefited from improving advertising trends despite tough comparisons from major international sports events like Copa America and the UEFA European Championship in the same period a year before. Advertising revenues grew 7.1% in the quarter, primarily due to continued digital growth led by Tubi, and higher news ratings and pricing. Growth at Tubi significantly bolsters Fox by expanding its reach into the rapidly growing, ad-supported streaming sector, attracting large numbers of younger, cord-cutting viewers who are increasingly hard to reach through traditional television channels. Building on this growing momentum, Fox is set to launch a subscription-based streaming service, Fox One, on August 21 for $19.99 per month, aiming to reach audiences beyond its mainstay cable television business. In June, the company acquired sports-focused streaming platform and television channel Caliente TV to expand its sports broadcasting presence in Mexico. Fox's total revenue rose 6.3% to $3.29 billion in the fourth quarter, beating estimates of $3.12 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company also reported a nearly 7% jump in revenue in its cable network programming unit to $1.53 billion, at a time when customers are shifting to digital streaming. Adjusted profit attributable to Fox's stockholders was $1.27 per share, compared with estimates of 99 cents.
