FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027™ Qualifiers groups drawn in Doha
An exciting 'Road to Qatar' has been laid out in greater detail for 80 national teams after the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Qualifiers Draw was successfully completed today, 13 May 2025, at the stunning ALHAZM in Doha.
The Draw laid out the initial pathways for all nations pursuing a precious place at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, where 32 nations will compete for the prestigious Naismith Trophy. Taking place across six dedicated windows between November 2025 and March 2027, there will be 420 games to enjoy worldwide.
The Naismith Trophy was brought on stage by FIBA Basketball World Cup 2002 MVP, former Germany national team captain and basketball great Dirk Nowitzki, representing his country, the reigning world champion after winning the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, and the FIBA Central Board attended the event, along with Qatar Basketball Federation and LOC Director General Mohammed Al-Meghaiseeb.
More than 60 representatives from National Federations around the globe were also present in Doha for this prestigious occasion.

The draw was conducted by FIBA Global Ambassador and basketball legend Carmelo Anthony. He was assisted by British icon Sir Mo Farah - one of the most decorated long-distance runners in history, with four Olympic gold medals and six world titles to his name - Mutaz Essa Barshim, the four-time Olympic medalist in the high jump, and Yassin Mousa, GGC basketball legend and 3x3 world champion.

Root's unbeaten 166 steers England to series win over WIndies
Agencies Joe Root became England's leading run-scorer in one-day internationals as his sparkling unbeaten 166 secured a three-wicket win over West Indies in Cardiff, reports Root, who is also his country's highest run-scorer in Tests, finished with 166 from 139 balls as England reached their target of 309 with seven balls remaining to take the three-match series with a game to spare. He surpassed World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan's tally of 6,957 runs on the way to his highest ODI score, leading England's recovery from 93-4 which included ducks for Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett and Jos Buttler. Root combined with Harry Brook for a third-wicket stand of 85, before a masterful partnership of 143 with Will Jacks put England within touching distance of victory. A fierce spell from Alzarri Joseph, who finished with 4-31, accounted for Jacks for 49 and Brydon Carse for two to keep West Indies interested, but Root and Adil Rashid calmly ticked off the remaining 21 runs, sealed in style by a classical Root drive down the ground. Earlier, West Indies' 308 was set up by Keacy Carty's 103, bookended by half-centuries from Brandon King and Shai Hope - and with plenty of assistance from England's sloppy fielding. Carty and King added 141 for the second wicket but the former was put down on by Duckett on one and Saqib Mahmood on 41, while Duckett also dropped King on 11 and somehow squandered a run-out opportunity when both batters were stranded in the middle of the pitch in the 21st over. 3x3 Youth Nations League: Qatar runners-up in second stage
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar national basketball team put up a strong showing in the second stage of the 3x3 U23 Basketball Nations League - Asia-Pacific, organized by the Qatar Basketball Association and being heldfrom May 28 to June 3, with the participation of elite international teams in both the men's and women's categories. Twelve teams are participating in the tournament, including six men's and six women's teams: Qatar (host), New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei. On Thursday, Qatar began their second-round campaign with a 21-19 victory over the Philippines and a 21-6 victory over Indonesia in Group A. Meanwhile, New Zealand defeated Chinese Taipei 21-10 and Singapore 21-11 in Group B, advanced to the second-round final. Qatar narrowly lost to New Zealand 16-17. The Qatari team thus collected 160 points, while New Zealand reached 200 points, having defeated Qatar 12-21 in the first round. The Qatari men's team consists of Hamad Yassin Ismail Musa, Zainuddin Badri, Nizar Mahmoud, Ahmed Saeed Mohammed, and Mubarak Jama. The tournament is part of the promotional activities accompanying Qatar's hosting of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, as part of the Qatar Basketball Association's commitment to intensifying quality events and enhancing the global presence of basketball in Qatar. The tournament is being held in cooperation with and under the supervision of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The current edition serves as a qualifying round for the FIBA U23 3x3 Basketball World Cup, with the men's and women's champions and the top scorers qualifying for the tournament, which will be held in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21. The Nations League was launched in 2017 as a development program for men and women under 23 to hone their skills in preparation for the open category.
