Calgary's Tillie Claggett cruises to PGA Women's Championship of Canada title
BURLINGTON, Ont. — Amateur Tillie Claggett put a pin in a memorable week at Burlington Golf & Country Club on Thursday, winning the PGA Women's Championship of Canada by a commanding seven strokes with a total score of 13-under, the lowest mark in relation to par since Brooke Henderson's 13-under performance in 2014.

Claggett's dominant display helped her secure the biggest title of her young career. Her victory not only adds her name to the Lorie Kane trophy, filled with Canadian golf legends, but also earns her a coveted exemption into the CPKC Women's Open, Canada's national women's open championship Aug 21-24 at Mississauga Golf & Country Club.

'I've kind of been knocking on the door a few times as my coach likes to say. So, it just really means a lot to be able to get it done in the final round because it is kind of a mental challenge to do that.'

Fittingly, the soon-to-be senior at Vanderbilt's win comes at the same venue where Henderson captured the championship in 2015.
'She is so cool. She's has done so much for girls in Canada,' said Claggett, who fired rounds of 68-63-69 this week. 'I don't think there was a girl who played golf in Canada who didn't look up to Brooke when we started, so it's just an absolute honour and I hope I can someday make my country proud like she has.'

Katie Cranston claimed the She Plays Golf Order of Merit title and, like Claggett, earned an exemption into the CPKC Women's Open.

The seventh hole this week was selected at the E-Z-GO 'It's Good to Go' Hole of the Week. Claggett was the only player to make eagle on the hole, however, she already earned the maximum eligible amount for an amateur.

Coco Gauff rallies for third-round victory in Montreal
(Photo credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images) Top-seeded Coco Gauff overcame a slow start to earn a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Russia's Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal. Kudermetova, after winning the first set, broke serve to open the second set. She had another break point at 1-3 but couldn't take advantage, and Gauff soon broke back to pull level at 3-3. Gauff broke again in the final game of the set to pull even, then won the first three games of the final set and cruised to the finish. Regarding the second-set rally, Gauff said, 'I just think I got really upset with myself and I was just like, 'You know, just try to hit the ball hard and deep in the court.' Eventually I was able to turn that anger into something more positive.' The 21-year-old Floridian added, 'It was a tough match today. I thought I did well mentally, especially on the return. I was playing an opponent that served really well. 'Obviously I would like to serve better on my end, but overall, just happy to get through.' The result sends the reigning French Open champion to a fourth-round matchup against Canadian Victoria Mboko, who also won Thursday after dropping the first set. Mboko prevailed 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 against the Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova. In the final two sets combined, Mboko saved four of the five break points she faced. No. 30 seed Dayana Yastremska, the Ukrainian who upset Gauff in the first round at Wimbledon, knocked off another seeded U.S. player on Thursday. She got past No. 8 Emma Navarro 7-5, 6-4. No. 28 McCartney Kessler emerged with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over No. 4 Mirra Andreeva of Russia in a match that featured 13 service breaks. No. 24 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine logged the day's tightest win, slipping past No. 15 Daria Kasatkina of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Kostyuk will oppose Kessler in the fourth round. Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro overtook Japan's Aoi Ito 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and China's Lin Zhu downed the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens 6-2, 6-2. In the final match of the night, No. 9 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan beat Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 7-6 (5).

Redblacks bust out of slump with another victory over the Calgary Stampeders
There's nothing wrong with the Ottawa Redblacks that playing the Calgary Stampeders doesn't cure. After a turtle-like start, the Redblacks scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter en route to a 31-11 victory over the Stamps in front of 16,115 fans Thursday night at TD Place. The win, the first of the season on home turf, snapped a four-game losing skid for the 2-6 Redblacks , whose only other victory was June 21 in Calgary. The Stampeders (5-3) were without starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., three Canadian receivers and starting cornerback Adrian Greene, who leads the CFL with four interceptions. They were also playing their fourth game in 19 days while Ottawa was coming off a bye week. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. The Redblacks held a 17-3 lead at halftime thanks to a pair of touchdown catches by Justin Hardy, but Calgary's second-ranked defence appeared determined to shift the momentum in the third quarter with two sacks, an interception, and holding Ottawa quarterback Dru Brown to just 12 passing yards. But on a night dominated by the Ottawa defence, cornerback Alijay McGhee stepped up and restored order on a 61-yard pick-six with just under 10 minutes left. It was the third interception of the night thrown by P.J. Walker, a former NFL starting quarterback who was making his first career CFL start. Walker wound up completing 20 of 37 passes for 273 yards while Brown, who left Ottawa's previous game in the second quarter with a head injury, connected on 19 of 27 throws for 225 yards. Calgary finally found the end zone on a 29-yard TD reception by ex-Redblack Dominque Rhymes, who also pulled in two long passes to set up the only score of the first quarter, a 37-yard Rene Paredes field goal. But the outcome was sealed when Stamps coach Dave Dickenson kept his offence on the field for a third-and-10 gamble from its own nine-yard line with just over two minutes left. Lorenzo Mauldin, last year's CFL co-leader in sacks, responded with his first of the season to give the Redblacks possession at the Calgary one. Short-yardage quarterback Dustin Crum entered to take the scoring plunge. The Redblacks didn't get a first down until Eugene Lewis hauled in a 23-yard pass with 1:22 left in the first quarter. Hardy grabbed a 12-yard Brown bullet to the end zone 18 seconds into the second to give Ottawa the lead. Amari Henderson's first interception of the year at the Redblacks' 11-yard line prevented the Stampeders from answering with points on the next drive. Brown took off on a rare run that covered 16 yards to help set up Ottawa's next score, an 18-yard field goal by Lewis Ward. The Redblacks padded their lead when Brown found Hardy deep in the end zone for their second touchdown from the Calgary 15 with just under three minutes left in the first half. There wasn't a Calgary defender within 15 yards of Hardy. The Redblacks squashed another Stampeders scoring opportunity when Deandre Lamont made his second big opening-half play by picking off Walker at the Ottawa 10-yard line, sending the home team into the intermission with a comfortable lead. Ottawa lost starting right tackle Zack Peleos on the first offensive play of the game. Pelehos, whose start to the season was delayed by a training-camp foot injury, limped off the field and was replaced by American Parker Moorer.
