Taiwan wants peace with China but needs tight defense — Lai

on Tuesday said that while Taiwan was ready to have exchanges with China, it also had to keep strengthening its defenses in the event that Beijing decided to assert its claim to sovereignty over the island with military force.
His remarks came as Lai, whom China has called a "separatist" while rejecting previous offers he has made for talks, marked one year in office.
What did Lai say on China and defense?
"I, too, am committed to peace. Because peace is priceless and war has no winners. But when it comes to seeking peace, we cannot have dreams or illusions," Lai said.
He said Taiwan would keep strengthening its defense capabilities, adding that the best way to prevent a war happening was to prepare for it.
Lai said his country would procure arms from abroad while developing its own arms industry, and stand "shoulder to shoulder" with its allies "to exert deterrent power."
But he said he also wanted
dialogue with China
, provided it was on an equal footing.
"I also reiterate here: Taiwan is happy to have exchanges and cooperation with China as long as there is reciprocal dignity. Using exchanges to replace hemming in, dialogue to replace confrontation," he said.
Over the last few years, China has stepped up military drills around Taiwan in a seeming bid at intimidation.
Last month, it held war games code-named "Strait Thunder-2025A" near the island, with the "A" at the end implying that they were not the last of their kind.
What did he say on US tariffs?
Taiwan is also grappling with the challenge posed by possible US tariffs, after US President Donald Trump imposed 32% levies on all imports from Taiwan last month before lowering them to 10% for 90 days to allow trade negotiations to take place.
Lai struck a conciliatory note on the subject.
"The US and Taiwan have long "cooperated and have also encouraged each other to grow," he said. "There are bound to be frictions between friends, but they can eventually be reconciled."
"Even if there are differences of opinion, as long as there is a foundation of trust and sincere dialogue, they can understand each other better and deepen their friendship," he added.
The US has traditionally been Taiwan's strongest unofficial ally in the face of
military threats
by China and is bound by law to provide the island with the equipment it needs to defend itself in the case of an attack.
Officials from both sides held a first round of trade talks last month and another is to follow in the coming weeks.

MediaTek to support mmWave spectrum band, 6G in India
NEW DELHI: Taiwanese wireless chipset provider MediaTek said that it would support millimeter wave or mmWave frequency bands in India that could also foster the country's next generation (6G) ambition. "MediaTek invests very heavily in cellular. That's our biggest segment. We believe in millimeter wave bands. From a cellular perspective, you need millimeter wave bands because we're all going to run out of frequencies and also 6G is also going to have even higher frequencies," Thomas Ho, marketing director, MediaTek said. Rick Tsai-headed fabless semiconductor company said that India's Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have millimeter wave airwaves in the 26 GHz band, and both incumbent telecom carriers are in the planning stage. "We know that Jio and Airtel have this frequency (26 GHz) band. And also the Indian government has requested to have some usage of this frequency band. So they are all under the planning to develop a product using this frequency band," the executive said. In the 2022 spectrum sale, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio and Sunil Mittal-driven Bharti Airtel acquired airwaves in the 26 GHz band. However, both service providers had to roll out 5G services based on mmWave range to meet minimum rollout norms. Last month, Jio sought approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to use mmWave spectrum for Wi-Fi technology. "India is a top-ranking Wi-Fi region, supporting diverse needs and driving innovation with Jio." The multinational said that it holds as much as 60% of the indoor Wi-Fi 6 router market, enhancing user experience with Jio and Airtel's Air Fiber rollout. MediaTek's Ho further said that MediaTek is a "big believer in millimeter wave range" and it did not take off not just India but worldwide due to various factors but the main reason is the cost versus benefit. "But, we are releasing, and we did release phones that support millimeter wave bands." In 2022, MediaTek unveiled its first mmWave 5G chipset, Dimensity 1050 system-on-chip (SoC) to power the next generation of 5G smartphones. "We also have 5G Continuous Delivery (CD) solutions that support millimeter wave, just like our competitor," he said, adding that the use of spectrum is a matter of economics, and the fabless chipset multinational said that it would support the Indian telcos. "The future, like 6G, is kind of partly built upon that." Early this year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), in a bid to open up more mmWave frequencies, had recommended the 37-37.5 GHz and 37.5-40 GHz spectrum bands for auction. The mmWave bands above 24 gigahertz (GHz) are considered as a valuable resource catering to densely populated urban areas. Airwaves in the high band offer an opportunity for service operators to offer low latency and high capacity. MediaTek claims to be the largest Wi-Fi supplier worldwide with over 2 billion devices shipped every year, and holds a leadership position in India's broadband market.

THE RCB BASH A video of a man lying breathless, another man slapping him, while the accompanying women trying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has gone viral. Visuals of a private security guard carrying a man on his shoulder or five volunteers carrying another person in haste as he was still breathing will haunt the nation. In a video, just before the stampede, loud cheering fans are seen gate crashing the stadium as the contingent of police personnel looks overwhelmed. THE MAHAKUMBH STAMPEDE On June 4, one visual stayed with me for a long time after the stampede was over. A small replica of the IPL trophy lay trampled amid hundreds of slippers in mud. A youngster, probably someone who idolises Kohli, came clutching it, sitting on top of his father's shoulder. But had to leave it in time to flee. Similarly, I remember a photo of a broken spectacle of a youngster left behind, trampled in mud on the night of January 30 this year at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. On the Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days for the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, a massive crowd swell between 1 am and 2.30 am resulted in at least 30 deaths and over 60 injuries. The stampede was triggered by an estimated 80-100 million devotees converging at the Sangam Nose, exacerbated by broken barricades and restricted access routes, leading to chaos and suffocation. Eyewitnesses reported devotees climbing over barricades and pushing, causing people to collapse. Just like the RCB event, the Maha Kumbh stampede too raised concerns about mismanagement, inadequate infrastructure, and prioritisation of VIP movements, with calls for better crowd control measures like pre-registration and staggered timings. Both tragedies are as real as it could get. They also bring out the exact same personal loss to which the political discourse remains largely unaffected. In Prayagraj, Karnataka's Saroja witnessed the death of four members of her family; Babita, a resident of Shivkuti in Prayagraj, barely evaded death by minutes after jumping off the barricades. There is no major difference between the two stampedes except that the first happened in a Congress-ruled state where Rajeev Shukla rushed to safeguard the government and the latter was in a BJP-ruled state where Ravi Shankar Prasad could smell a 'conspiracy", as he said in a Lok Sabha discussion on the issue on February 3. In what was seen as a highly irresponsible statement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed during a parliamentary debate on February 3 that 'thousands" had died in the Mahakumbh stampede. Days after the stampede, Jairam Ramesh accused the Uttar Pradesh government of hiding the true death toll. In India, lives are compensated with an amount the administration deems fit. On February 16, in the national capital, 18 people died in an overcrowded New Delhi Railway Station during a stampede. On July 2, 2024, 121 died at a stampede at a Satsang in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras. On the first day of the year in 2022, in Vaishno Devi, 12 people died due to a heavy influx of devotees that resulted in a stampede. Most of these victims are forgotten and reduced to just statistics. Their significance is limited to the tragedy, but their usage depends upon which political outfit is ruling the state.
