Cricket South Africa (CSA) has taken a significant step in its strategic restructuring by appointing Shukri Conrad as the head coach of the Proteas Men's all-format team.
It confirmed Independent Media's report back on April 1 already stating that Conrad would succeed former Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter after his sudden resignation.
Conrad has been at the helm of the Test squad since January 2023 and will now extend his influence on the white-ball formats, starting with the T20 International tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand in July.
The 58-year-old will lead the national team through to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, which is poised to take place on home soil. This decision comes as part of CSA's broader initiative to revitalise the national team structure, which further includes the return of a National Convenor of Selection.
Enoch Nkwe, CSA's Director of National Teams and High Performance, heralded Conrad's appointment.
'Shukri's track record with the red-ball team speaks for itself. He has laid a solid foundation and instilled a strong identity within the Test environment. I'm excited to see him bring the profile and structure to the white-ball space,' Nkwe said.
'Having been part of the national setup over the past two years, he understands the demands of international cricket. He has also established sound relationships with the players and we have no doubt that he is the best person for the job.
'We are confident he will help us maintain our current upward trajectory and remain competitive across all three formats.'
Conrad expressed his gratitude for the sizeable responsibility, stating: 'I'm truly honoured to be entrusted with leading the national team across all three formats. Coaching the Test side has been the greatest privilege of my cricket journey, and overseeing the white-ball teams is something unbelievably special.

Conrad is hugely optimistic about South Africa's white-ball talent, highlighting the mix of experienced senior players and promising youngsters.
'I'm genuinely excited about the prospects that lie ahead. South African cricket has incredible white ball talent, from the calibre of our senior players to the emerging group of juniors aspiring to represent the Proteas,' he said.
'There's a strong foundation to build on, and I believe we have what it takes to achieve something special.
As Proteas Men's team can look forward with a singular vision under Conrad, the schedule remains packed, with priorities including the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia set for June 11-15 at the iconic Lord's, the T20 World Cup next year, and the anticipated 50-over World Cup the year after.
"During this period, planning will be key for us as we look to manage our player base to ensure that the strongest teams can be fielded in every format," Conrad said
'During this period, planning will be key for us as we look to manage our player base to ensure that the strongest teams can be fielded in every format. We want to obviously be the best in the world in all three forms of the game and that is no doubt my number one target and goal for the Proteas.'

ICC honours SA icons Smith, Amla as Proteas eye World Test Championship glory

Two of South Africa's best have been recognised as Hall of Fame members following incredible careers. Against the backdrop of South Africa's World Test Championship (WTC) final bid at Lord's against Australia, two icons of South Africa's cricket team from a previous era were recognised as icons of the game. Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla were inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame on Monday night at Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded most of their discography. It was a sweet tune sung by master of ceremony Ian Bishop, waxing lyrical about the seven inductees who apart from Smith and Amla included legends Matthew Hayden, MS Dhoni, Daniel Vettori, Sana Mir and Sarah Taylor. Abbey Road Studios is a 15-minute walk from Lord's Cricket Ground, a walk that includes the famous Abbey Road crossing where the picture of the Beatles' acclaimed 1969 album was taken. While the area is rich in music history in St John's Wood, South Africa's cricketing record in the area is fine, too. Lord's is where Smith, with Amla as his anchor, claimed the Test mace in 2012 against England. Amla scored a second-innings century to help South Africa to a 51-run victory and 2-0 series win over the old foes. Now, 13 years later, they have been recognised as two of the finest cricketers to have played the game, and will be in attendance at Lord's hoping to see their compatriots hold the Test mace up once again. 'Honoured' Amla's record in one-day international cricket is as exemplary as his Test record, with 8,113 runs in the 50-over format in only 181 matches — the third most runs for South Africa in the format. 'It's unbelievable really,' Amla said after being inducted. 'Knowing all the great cricketers that have been included in the hall of fame, it's pretty unreal. 'I don't think you ever see yourself as someone worthy of being included among these guys. I'm really honoured.' In Test cricket, Amla was equally dominant, scoring 9,282 runs in 124 matches at an average of 46.64. While Smith was exceptional as an opening batter, having scored 9,265 runs in 117 matches, his ability as a captain is what has made him widely revered. Smith led the country in 109 Tests and won 53 of them. The broad-chested Smith admitted to knowing about his induction into the highest honours of the game for a few weeks prior to the day. 'I've known for like two months now,' the former skipper said. 'It's been quite a weird, surreal feeling. 'I'm immensely proud, I got a bit croaky on stage when you look back at some of the things and think about it. You give a lot and you share a lot with a lot of amazing people along the way.' Smith and Amla's careers overlapped, and they spent a large part of their time on the cricket field playing either with or against each other. 'We played about 70 Tests together,' Smith said. 'Hash and I are the same age, we played against each other at school. 'There are lots of great memories, lots of great partnerships.' Smith and Amla join Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers from that 2012 side to have joined the ICC Hall of Fame, a side that is widely regarded as the country's best ever. The current crop of Proteas will be hoping to emulate the performances of that side in their quest for Test match glory at Lord's. DM

Teen sensation Mbekezeli Mbokazi impresses on Bafana Bafana debut

One for the future! Orlando Pirates' Mbekezeli Mbokazi impressed on his international debut for Bafana Bafana when they took on Mozambique in Polokwane on Tuesday night. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix On Tuesday evening, South Africans witnessed the first steps in international football of a player who could go on to become the greatest defender this country has ever produced. Bafana Bafana beat Mozambique 2-0 after an assured performance at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. At the heart of the home team's defence was one Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who did not put a foot wrong despite playing international football for the very first time. Mbokazi is just 19 years old, but his performance at the back was that of a seasoned veteran. He was always in the right place at the right time and knew what to do when he had the ball at his feet – attributes that are rare to find in a player so young. Following Tuesday's debut, Aaron Mokoena, the only man to play over 100 times for Bafana Bafana, was impressed with Mbokazi, a player he once coached at junior level, and praised Hugo Broos' impact on youngsters. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. 'I think this coach is one coach who will leave a serious foundation for us,' Bafana's skipper at the 2010 World Cup said during the SABC3 broadcast. 'I mean, these are international standards, senior international standards… I coached him at the U20s. He could play left-back, but today the interceptions that he had gave me the belief that he deserves a chance to be part of the squad.' It's easy to forget that Mbokazi was playing in the Multichoice Diski Challenge at the beginning of last season. After he was promoted to Pirates' first team, he convinced Jose Riveiro and the rest of the technical staff at the club that he belonged at that level. And it didn't take long for Bafana coach Broos to jump on the bandwagon. "I think what I saw from Mbokazi was, for me, his game is very mature. He takes good decisions, and he's a good defender – he's not the tallest, but he wins aerial duels," the Belgian Broos said in the lead-up to the June friendlies. "He's 1.80m, I think, but he doesn't lose many duels. He has good positioning and reads the attack well, so yeah, he's a good defender." Despite still being a teenager, Mbokazi has done enough to ensure that he gets more opportunities at international level, and South Africans should be excited about his potential. After Riveiro jumped ship and headed to Al Ahly in Egypt, reports suggested he was keen on taking the youngster with him. It still remains to be seen if that interest is concrete. Regardless, he is one player who will likely move abroad in no time. Mbokazi should now just focus on improving and hope he avoids injuries. We have had players with his potential in the past. Rivaldo Coetzee was also just a teenager when he made his international debut, and big things were expected from the man from Kakamas in the Northern Cape. However, an injured foot back in 2017 stopped him from moving to Europe. After securing a big-money move from Ajax Cape Town to Mamelodi Sundowns, it looked like he was going places, but more injuries saw him become a bit-part player at the club. Now at just 28 years old, when he should be at the peak of his football career, Coetzee is on the hunt for a new club after being released by Sundowns. Mbokazi will be hoping none of that happens to him. If Tuesday night was anything to go by, South African football may have found its next defensive lynchpin – a player with the poise, intelligence and hunger to go where few local defenders ever have. But talent alone isn't enough. The challenge now is consistency, staying grounded, and navigating the physical and mental demands that come with top-level football. Mbokazi has made a statement with his debut; the real journey begins from here. If managed well, and protected from the pitfalls that have undone others before him, this 19-year-old from Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal could become more than just a promising player – he could be the standard-bearer for a new generation of Bafana Bafana defenders.
