Thalassery engg. students develop IRIS software for Kannur airport

The Hindu04-05-2025
In a significant step towards strengthening industry-academia partnerships, final-year B.Tech students from the Information Technology department of the College of Engineering, Thalassery, have developed and handed over a customised software application named IRIS (Incident Reporting and Investigation System) to Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL).
The innovative application was designed to streamline the airport's internal safety operations. Developed as part of their final-year B.Tech project, students Aadithya V. Anand, Navajyoth P., Vaisakh Sathesh, and Vivek N. M. created IRIS under the guidance of project guide Nithya G.P. and project coordinator Akhil Chandran Miniyadan, both assistant professors in the IT department.
In a felicitation ceremony held at the airport recently, KIAL Managing Director C. Dinesh Kumar honoured the students and faculty members behind the project. The event was also attended by Shamal P.K., head of the IT department at the college, Ashwini Kumar, chief operating officer of the airport, along with senior IT and safety officials from KIAL.
IRIS allows for real-time reporting and analysis of safety incidents across departments via a centralised dashboard. The system includes a role-based access control mechanism to ensure data security and privacy, and features an intuitive and efficient user interface. The application enhances operational efficiency, allowing airport safety personnel to monitor and respond to incidents more effectively.
'The project is a prime example of what industry-institute interaction can achieve,' said Akhil Chandran, the project coordinator. 'It not only provides students with exposure to real-world challenges but also fulfils our responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the society we live in.'
Beyond its use at airports, the IRIS platform is scalable and adaptable to other sectors such as ports, industrial facilities, and railway stations. This is not the first time Thalassery Engineering College has collaborated with KIAL. Last year, the college's IT department delivered another application, which is currently being used by the airport staff.
The initiative marks a notable achievement in bridging the gap between engineering education and practical industry needs, setting a model for future collaborations.

IRIS Q1 topline grows 10%, investments ramp up in Regtech business

Navi Mumbai, India – August 14, 2025: IRIS Business Services Limited posted a 10% growth in topline for the first quarter of FY 2026 even as the company geared up to scale its SaaS business in the enterprise technology space. 'Post the divestment of the Taxtech business and with the availability of non-dilutive capital, we are fully focused on taking the necessary steps to grow our Suptech and Regtech business lines, both of which have large and attractive opportunities globally,' said K. Balachandran, CEO of IRIS. 'This is an investment phase in the growth trajectory of the company, especially in our Regtech global SaaS business, where we are investing in building the sales and marketing infrastructure, as well as strengthening our products to meet the demands of enterprise customers in the global market,' he added. The Suptech business of the company continued to perform well as revenues grew at 19% YoY with improved margins. The company also received in Q1 FY2026, in partnership with Accenture, a prestigious award from the Qatar Central Bank to build a digital reporting platform. IRIS' new AI enabled automated XBRL report creation product, IRIS Instant, was rolled out in the Malaysian markets and saw early adoption through a much more simplified and intuitive way of creating digital XBRL reports. 'Going forward, regulators are likely to see tools like IRIS Instant making XBRL creation using AI much easier within their jurisdictions. This in turn should enable newer regulators to more easily adopt digital standards like XBRL,' said Rahul Dhamne, Consulting Head, IRIS iFile. On the Regtech side, IRIS Carbon clocked a 10% growth in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) on a QoQ basis. 'Our new Disclosure Management product has been well received in the market with over two dozen customers using this solution in the international markets, at a significantly higher annual subscription value compared with pure XBRL reporting module,' said Deepta Rangarajan, Co-founder of IRIS. 'Even as we enhance our offering to make it best-in-class, it is heartening to see that our disclosure management solution has been able to establish clear value for the Office of the CFO both in the mid-market segment as well as in the enterprise segment,' said Anuradha RK, Business Head, IRIS Carbon. Vineet Kandoi, Finance Controller at IRIS concluded 'While the first quarter is typically a subdued period for the Regtech business, this quarter's performance was further impacted by the deferral of a few anticipated orders for our automated data flow solution in the BFSI segment. We expect these to materialize in the coming periods. However, our principal focus is on growing the ARR, and we believe we will see that happening with the investments we are currently making.' About IRIS Business Services Limited IRIS Business Services Limited is a Global RegTech company listed on the BSE (Scrip code: 540735) and the NSE (Symbol: IRIS). The IRIS SupTech suite is leveraged by 30+ regulators worldwide including business registries, central banks and stock exchanges/ securities commissions to simplify and streamline their supervisory operations. At Mach 1.8, South Korea's KF-21 Has Left American F-35s In The Dust

Last Updated: The KF-21 has 10 hardpoints carrying up to 7,700 kg of weapons, including AIM-120 AMRAAM, Meteor, IRIS-T missiles, JDAM bombs, anti-ship missiles and a 20mm cannon The US has long promoted its advanced F-35 fighter jet to allied nations, including India, but New Delhi has consistently shown little interest in acquiring the costly aircraft. Meanwhile, in a strategic move to counter American dominance in the defense sector, South Korea, partnering with Indonesia, has developed the 4.5-generation KF-21 Boramae fighter jet. Positioned as a competitor to France's Rafale, which is already a key asset in the Indian Air Force, this new aircraft marks a significant shift in the regional aerospace landscape. First Test Flight In 2022 The KF-21 Boramae is being hailed as a significant step by South Korea towards altering the military balance in Asia. Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) developed the jet in partnership with Indonesia. The KF-21 Boramae is a modern 4.5 generation multi-role fighter jet designed to reduce dependence on American aircraft and bolster the domestic defence industry. The first test flight of the KF-21 took place on July 19, 2022. Capabilities And Specifications The KF-21 can establish air supremacy and accurately target ground and sea targets. The aircraft is 16.9 metres long, has a wingspan of 11.2 metres, and is powered by two General Electric F414-GE-400K turbofan engines, allowing it to reach a top speed of 2,200 km/h (Mach 1.81). Its range is approximately 2,900 km, with a combat radius of around 1,100 km. Stealth And Weaponry The KF-21 features 10 hardpoints, capable of carrying a payload of up to 7,700 kg. It can be equipped with advanced air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM, Meteor, and IRIS-T, as well as JDAM and Mk series bombs and anti-ship missiles. The aircraft also has a 20 mm M61A2 Vulcan cannon. Future upgrades will include an internal weapon bay and enhanced stealth features. While not entirely 'invisible' like the F-35, its design and materials significantly reduce radar detection. Projected Production Timeline The KF-21 incorporates South Korea's indigenous AESA radar, a high-tech glass cockpit, and a modern data link system. The total project cost is estimated at $7.9 billion, with each aircraft priced between $65 and $70 million. South Korea plans to induct 120 KF-21s into its air force by 2032, with around 50 aircraft to be built for Indonesia.
