Govt vows stronger support to recognise youth's role in nation development, says Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Youth Day celebration reflects the government's recognition of the vital role and significant contributions of young people to national development, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
In a Facebook post, Zahid said today's younger generation is becoming more mature, knowledgeable and intellectually equipped to face increasingly complex and demanding challenges.
"Recognising this, the government continues to strengthen various initiatives to expand youth development opportunities, including in the fields of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) entrepreneurship, the green economy and the digital economy, so that our young people are not only competitive but also ready to lead future change.
"I believe today's youth are the shapers of tomorrow. Keep moving forward with confidence and contribute with full spirit, because the future of this country greatly depends on your courage and wisdom," he said.
National Youth Day is celebrated every May 15 with various activities held nationwide. 'Yakin Boleh' (Believe You Can) has been chosen as this year's theme.
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, in a separate Facebook post, called on all Malaysian youth to remain committed to realising their aspirations and contributing to the nation's progress.
"You are the backbone of the country, drivers of innovation and future leaders who will shape a more prosperous Malaysia.
"Let us work together to strengthen the sports sector, foster unity and support the sustainable development agenda. Your dynamic spirit and dedication are the foundation of our collective success," she said.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said also conveyed her message on Facebook, saying the strength and capability of a nation undoubtedly lie with its youth.
"Recognising this reality, the Madani Government has formulated various empowerment initiatives to prepare the younger generation to carry forward our beloved nation's glory.
"Through the legal and institutional reform segment, the government is also committed to ensuring that every young person is given the space, justice and equal opportunity to build a more transparent, just and high-integrity Malaysia," she said.

LONDON: Malaysia and Thailand have agreed to strengthen cross-border disaster preparedness efforts, particularly in managing flood risks along Sungai Golok. This follows a bilateral meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul on June 4. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Eighth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, raised concerns over severe flooding in Kelantan, attributed to excessive water discharge from completed flood mitigation projects on the Thai side of the border. To mitigate future incidents, particularly ahead of the Northeast Monsoon expected to begin in November, Ahmad Zahid proposed a formal early-warning mechanism. Under the proposal, Thailand would notify Malaysian authorities at least three to four days prior to any planned water releases from its dams. "Alhamdulillah, the Thai side has agreed to this proposal, and an early notification system will be established to safeguard the wellbeing of people on both sides of the border," Ahmad Zahid said in a statement on Thursday (June 5). He described the agreement as a crucial first step towards more robust cross-border disaster preparedness and response strategies. In addition to flood mitigation, both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to infrastructure development along the border. Ahmad Zahid welcomed the recent signing of the agreement for the construction of the Second Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok Bridge. He also expressed support for scheduled river deepening works and the construction of river embankments at the Sungai Golok estuary, which are expected to commence in October this year. "These steps underscore the strong commitment of both nations to enhancing disaster preparedness and border security. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had raised the matter during a meeting with his Thai counterpart, Anutin Charnvirakul, who is also Home Minister, on the sidelines of the 8th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) in Geneva today. He said the early notification measure aims to give Malaysia sufficient time to make the necessary preparations and alert communities, particularly those living along the Sungai Golok basin, during the Northeast Monsoon expected to begin this November. 'Alhamdulillah, this proposal has been accepted and agreed to by the Thai side, and an early notification mechanism will be established for the safety and welfare of the people in both countries. 'This is an important initial step before being refined with other follow-up actions to ensure that disaster preparedness can be implemented more effectively,' he said in a statement today. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the unusual overflow of water in Sungai Golok and areas along the Malaysia-Thailand border was caused by the completion of a flood mitigation project on the Thai side, which was followed by the release of water that led to severe flooding and damage to embankment structures on the Malaysian side. 'As a result, the water level in Kelantan rose above normal levels,' he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid welcomed the signing of the agreement for the Second Rantau Panjang-Sungai Golok Bridge Construction project, along with plans to carry out deepening works at the Sungai Golok estuary and the construction of a river embankment scheduled to begin this October.
