Irish legend O'Mahony to lead BaaBaas in South Africa
Ireland rugby legend Peter O'Mahony will captain the Barbarians against world champions South Africa in a non-cap exhibition match at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
The 35-year-old retired as a Test flanker after the 2025 Six Nations Championship having made 114 appearances and played his final match for Munster in the United Rugby Championship last month.

O'Mahony forms a vastly experienced back row with two former All Blacks, fellow flanker Sam Cane and number 8 Shannon Frizell, who both play in Japan.
In the matchday 23, there are 17 who have played at Test level, including another recent retiree, loosehead prop Cian Healy, who holds the Irish record with 137 international appearances.
It is the first time the Barbarians have played in South Africa. They won four, drew one and lost three of eight previous meetings. They last met in 2016, drawing 31-31 at Wembley Stadium.
The Cape Town game marks the start of the season for the Springboks, who will also play 13 Tests, starting with a match against Italy in Pretoria on July 5.

That is reflected by all the recruiting services, including ESPN. ESPN ranks the Notre Dame class as the No. 3 class in the country, and 14 of Notre Dames' 21 commits ranked inside the latest ESPN300 rankings. Advertisement There is a new highest ranked Notre Dame commit in the ESPN rankings, as cornerback Khary Adams jumped up 39 spots and is now ranked as the No. 29 overall player in the country. Adams is also now the No. 2 ranked cornerback in the entire nation. Next up on the list is North Carolina defensive end Rodney Dunham, who ranks No. 57 overall in the ESPN rankings. Dunham is ranked as the No. 6 overall defensive end. Fellow North Carolina edge Ebenezer Ewetade ranks as the No. 237 overall player in the country. Notre Dame's other committed defensive lineman - Texas standout Tiki Hola - ranks as the No. 151 overall player. The Irish are trying to finish the class off with defensive tackle Elijah Golden, who is ranked as the No. 85 overall player in the nation. Fellow offensive lineman Ben Nichols was another big mover in the ESPN rankings, with the Michigan big man moving up 92 spots in the rankings. Nichols now ranks as the nation's No. 195 overall player. Nichols is ranked as the No. 5 guard in the land. Another Michigan lineman, Gregory Patrick, ranks as the No. 221 overall player in the ESPN rankings. Fellow running back Jonaz Walton ranked as the No. 140 overall player in the country. Adams wasn't the only secondary commit to rank in the ESPN300. Safety Joey O'Brien ranked as the nation's No. 103 overall player by ESPN, although that ranking is still way too low for a player that should be a consensus Top 50 recruit. Florida cornerback Ayden Pouncey is also in the ESPN300, checking in as the No. 167 overall player, giving the Irish three secondary commits in the 2026 class. Tennessee cornerback Chaston Smith being ranked as a three-star by ESPN might be the biggest oversight on the list. North Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis Jr. is ranked as the No. 147 overall player in the country. In the past week the Nittany Lions lost two of their top recruiting targets. Class of 2026 players Khary Adams (four-star) and Joey O'Brien (four-star) both committed to play at Notre Dame. The two are both ranked in the ESPN top 200 recruits list for their class. O'Brien and Adams each had Penn State listed in their top choices, prior to their official commitment. Joey O'Brien O'Brien is listed as the No. 4 defensive back in the class of 2026 according to ESPN. He is listed at at 6'4" and weighs in at 185 LBS. His speed and wide range of motion got him on the Irish's radar, as well as Penn's. The Nittany Lions were looking to add some more safety depth, after losing starter Kevin Winston Jr., who got drafted 82nd overall by the Tennessee Titans in the 2025 NFL Draft. Advertisement Winston was highly touted after his 2023-2024 sophomore season. In his junior season this past year, he went out week two last season with a torn ACL against Bowling Green. This opened the flood gates for someone new to make an impact. Sophomore A.J. Harris had no problem in doing that. He helped there be little to no fall off when Winston jr. went down. Penn State finished considered as a top-10 defense, and Harris' draft stock climbed. On a "way too early" mock draft ESPN's Jordan Reid had Harris landing in the first round, getting drafted 18th overall by the Minnesota Vikings. With Harris being back in the safety stable this season, and Penn landing another highly praised player from the transfer portal in the same position, King Mack (Alabama). It leads to the question is this position really a vital need for Penn? They seem to think so, because they swung and missed on another top DB recruit in the class of 2026. Khary Adams Adams was ranked as the No. 68 overall prospect by ESPN, and the 8th ranked cornerback. On June 20 he made his commitment to Notre Dame official. With NIL playing a massive part in getting top tier talent, Penn State may be trending in the wrong direction. While the team who flatlined their chances of a national championship last year, seeming to be trending upwards. He had Penn State among his final choices, but the top rated tackle, like O'Brien and Adams opted to play for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame stays hot on the recruiting trail, as 4-star 2026 TE Ian Premer commits
Notre Dame football's recruiting hot streak is not slowing down anytime soon, and on Thursday afternoon they added yet another talented prospect to its 2026 recruiting class. The Irish were viewed as a contender for Kansas tight end Ian Premer, but it looked like it would be tough to pull him away from his home state, but that's exactly what happened. Notre Dame beat out Kansas State, Kansas and Iowa State for the 6-foot, 5-inch and 220-pound tight end. It's a big verbal for the Irish, as Premer is ranked as the No. 44 prospect in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He becomes the second player at the position for Notre Dame, joining Preston Fryzel, who committed just a few days ago. The class is now up to twenty-two commits, with room for just a few more as Notre Dame tries to shore up a class that is viewed by many as one of the top collections of talent in the 2026 cycle.
