China's EV makers turn on BYD as price war escalates

BEIJING: Fierce competition among China's leading EV makers has intensified, with a long-running dispute between BYD and Great Wall Motor over emissions compliance escalating after Geely joined in to criticise BYD's aggressive price cuts.
The row dates back to 2023, when Great Wall Motor reported BYD to Chinese regulators, alleging that its two best-selling hybrid models failed to meet emissions standards.
The issue re-emerged last month when Great Wall's chairman, Wei Jianjun, expressed concerns about the ongoing price war and confirmed that the regulatory probe was still active.
BYD dismissed his remarks on the industry's health as 'alarmist' but did not comment on the emissions issue. At the time, BYD rejected the claim and said its vehicles met China's emission standards.
On Saturday, Geely's vice president, Victor Yang, publicly backed Great Wall's claims at an auto conference in Chongqing, stating that Geely had conducted its own emissions tests and reached the same conclusions.
'Wei Jianjun is a genuine, honest person and is our industry's whistleblower,' Yang said in videos of his speech posted online by The Paper and other local media outlets.

Great Wall Motor's claims concern BYD's use of non-pressurised fuel tanks in its Qin Plus and Song Plus plug-in hybrids, which let the liquid inside evaporate more rapidly than in pressurised ones.
BYD's general manager of branding and public relations, Li Yunfei, responded to Geely's comments on Sunday on his Weibo account, saying that the non-pressurised tanks used in its cars between 2021 and 2023 were compliant with the regulatory requirements at the time but added that BYD had since changed them due to customer complaints.
Li's Weibo post was no longer there on Monday, although Reuters could not verify the reason for this and the company did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
Great Wall Motor did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday, while Geely referred Reuters to the videos posted online of Yang's speech and declined to provide additional comment.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, one of the regulators involved in the emissions probe, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The escalating feud comes as China's EV market faces intense competition as BYD's recent price incentives, which reduced the starting price of its cheapest model to 55,800 yuan ($7,771.05), triggered a broader sell-off in auto stocks.
Following this, MIIT called for the sector to halt its price wars and summoned automakers to a meeting last week, two sources familiar with the matter said. The meeting was first reported by Bloomberg.
Dealers have also urged automakers to stop dumping inventory on them.

Indian miner Vedanta's demerger faces government objection, CNBC-TV18 reports

Indian miner Vedanta's demerger is facing objection from the federal government, CNBC-TV18 reported on Wednesday, after the company received a warning from the markets regulator for non-compliance. Shares of the company fell 2.4% to hit session's low after the report. Vedanta, led by billionaire Anil Agarwal, aims for a sweeping overhaul to carve itself up into multiple separate businesses, in a move aimed at shoring up the group's financial performance. US tariffs on Chinese graphite spark opportunity for India's Epsilon India's National Company Law Tribunal has deferred Vedanta's demerger case hearing to September 17 after the federal government objected to the split, claiming it has 'serious objections,' the CNBC-TV18 report said. The federal government has flagged concealment and non-disclosure of key details for the demerger as well as 'inflated revenues' and 'concealed liabilities,' it added. Vedanta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

US tariffs on Chinese graphite spark opportunity for India's Epsilon

NEW DELHI: India's Epsilon Advanced Materials is moving swiftly to close deals to supply critical components to Japanese and South Korean battery makers in the U.S., a top executive said, after Washington imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese imports. The U.S. in July imposed a punitive 93.5% tariff on import of graphite anode materials from China, creating an opportunity for India's Epsilon to break Beijing's monopoly on supplies of the key battery component. Indeed, U.S.-based battery makers are eager to secure alternative suppliers as the higher levies disrupt supply chains and stoke uncertainty, including over future price rises. Vikram Handa, managing director of Epsilon, which makes graphite anode materials for EV batteries, expressed confidence over some new supply deals. 'Last month, they were saying let's wait and see how things go. Now we think in the next 60 to 80 days, we will close our contracts,' said Handa. Epsilon, which announced plans for a $650 million factory in North Caroline in October 2023, has been working on getting permits and environmental clearances, while waiting for firm orders before putting a shovel in the ground. 'The numbers now start making sense for customers to buy from the U.S.,' said Handa, adding that the plant, which will have capacity of 30,000 tonnes of anode materials, is expected to be up and running by mid-2027. An EV battery is made up of four components - anode, cathode, electrolyser and separator. The anode contributes to fast-charging and vehicle range. The U.S. needs 500,000 tonnes of anode materials a year for its EV and energy storage battery needs, which were met largely by China, which refines over 90% of the world's graphite into the material used in almost all EV battery anodes. Mumbai-based Epsilon also has plans to invest over $1.1 billion in a 100,000-tonne anode materials facility in India's Karnataka state, but has yet to see serious interest in India. Handa said low Chinese prices were a draw for Indian companies, but he was trying to persuade them to buy at least 20% from Epsilon, so that 'if China closes the tap,' they had an alternative supplier. 'If it is zero (demand for Epsilon's anodes) right now, how will I put up a plant?' he asked. 'I hope this rare earth story doesn't play out the same way for battery materials,' given Indian companies dependence on them, he said.

India, China agree to resume direct flights

India and China agreed on Tuesday to resume direct flights and step up trade and investment flows as the neighbours rebuild ties damaged by a 2020 border clash. The Asian giants are cautiously strengthening ties against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's unpredictable foreign policy, staging a series of high-level bilateral visits. The latest statements came at the end of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's two-day visit to New Delhi for the 24th round of talks with Indian National Security (NSA) Advisor Ajit Doval to resolve their decades old border dispute. The border talks covered issues related to pulling back troops both countries have amassed on their Himalayan border, delimitation of borders and boundary affairs, the Indian foreign ministry said, without elaborating. The talks appeared to have made no major breakthrough on those issues and Beijing said both countries agreed to meet again in China in 2026. But it also said the two countries would resume direct flights and boost trade and investment, along with smooth facilitation of visas. Direct flights have been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. No date was given for their resumption. "Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity," Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X after meeting Wang. Modi is scheduled to travel to China at the end of this month to take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation — his first visit to the country in more than seven years. Tibet dam A readout from the Chinese foreign ministry said Wang told Doval that "the stable and healthy development of China-India relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries' people". The two sides "should enhance mutual trust through dialogues and expand cooperation," Wang said, and should aim for consensus in areas such as border control and demarcation negotiations. India said Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar had underlined in his talks with Wang India's concerns with regard to the mega dam China is building on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet. Yarlung Zangbo becomes the Brahmaputra as it flows into India and Bangladesh, a lifeline for millions. The dam would have implications for lower riparian states and the need for "utmost transparency" was strongly underlined, New Delhi said. Chinese officials say hydropower projects in Tibet will not have a major impact on the environment or on downstream water supplies, but India and Bangladesh have nevertheless raised concerns. Earlier on Tuesday, an Indian source said Wang had assured Jaishankar that Beijing was addressing three key Indian concerns — the need for fertilisers, rare earths and tunnel boring machines. The Indian foreign and mines ministries and China's commerce ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
