In a stunning twist, the Saints cut their starting punter Matthew Hayball before preseason

USA Today2 days ago
Well this is a bit of a surprise. The first New Orleans Saints preseason game is just days away, but the team isn't bringing their starting punter with them. In an Aug. 6 release from the team, the Saints announced they have waived punter Matthew Hayball and re-signed rookie quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who was waived on July 1.
It's a tough break for Hayball, who won the starting job last summer from Lou Hedley. But the competition isn't over. Two punters remain with the team after the Saints traveled to California for a few days of practices at UC-Irvine before their preseason game with the Los Angeles Chargers, so it'll be rookie free agents James Burnip and Kai Kroeger battling it out these next few weeks. Special teams coordinator Phil Galiano was part of the staff which made Hayball the starter in the first place, but he clearly wants to take things in a new direction after replacing his longtime boss Darren Rizzi.
Thomas Morstead set high standards in his decade-plus with the team, but at this point you have to wonder if the Saints shouldn't have just kept him in the first place. They've gone through four different punters in the five years since cutting the fan-favorite Pro Bowler, including Blake Gillikin (2021 and 2022), Hedley (2023), and Hayball (2024), with either Burnip or Kroeger punting in 2025. As for Morstead? He's still punting at age 39, now with the San Francisco 49ers, and if he can hold onto it, he'll return to New Orleans as a visitor on Sept. 14.

Ex-Giants corner Eli Apple released by 49ers after just two weeks

Eli Apple's San Francisco tenure proved to be a short one. The 49ers signed Apple on July 28 following a tryout, but his stay lasted just two weeks after he was released Thursday. His career started with high hopes on the Giants after he was drafted at No. 10 in 2016. He spent two and a half seasons in New York, totaling just one interception and 20 passes defended in 30 games. In 2021, Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus called Apple the worst first-round pick made by the franchise since 2006. Apple said earlier this year that playing in the Big Easy was more agreeable. 'Chaotic is what I knew from being in the media storm of New York. So when I got to New Orleans, the media wasn't as ruthless when I got out there. It was more calm for me,' Apple said in a Q&A with ReadWrite's Kyle Odegard. 'Sometimes it's tough … That was my mistake, trying to do too much.' But in 2019, he regressed, posting an interception-less season with New Orleans. 3 Eli Apple with the Bengals. Now, after getting cut by the 49ers, it remains to be seen where he'll end up next as he looks to continue his NFL career.

Rashawn Slater tears patellar tendon: What's his timeline to return?

The Los Angeles Chargers were bracing for bad news when starting left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a non-contact knee injury during Thursday's training camp. And come Thursday afternoon, the team's worst fears for Slater were realized. According to a statement from the Chargers, Slater suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. The two-time Pro Bowler will under go surgery and has already been ruled out for the entire 2025 season. But what is Slater's timeline to return looking like? With an injury like a patellar tendon tear, the road back could not be more difficult for an NFL player. Patellar tendon recovery time While torn ligaments like an ACL or MCL aren't the career-threatening injuries they once were, the same can't be said for a ruptured patellar tendon. It's a brutal, devastating injury that has potential career-ending implications. According to a study from Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine, an analysis of patellar tendon tears in NFL players between 2009 and 2023 painted a grim picture. From the study on return to play: The overall RTP for PT tears was 55.4% (31/56). For players with PT tears, 21.4% (12/56) returned to their prior performance level within 2 years, with 7 players doing so during the next season and 5 players doing so during the second post-injury season. Essentially, 45.6% of players with that injury never return to NFL action. And nearly 80% of players didn't return within two seasons. Every player is different, but Slater certainly faces a difficult road back after such a serious injury. He will miss the 2025 season and could reasonably be out for the 2026 season as well, if not longer.
