Trade Secretary to push for timeline on US tariff exemption

Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is set to meet US officials on Tuesday as the UK aims to set a timeline for its exemption from President Donald Trump's tariffs. Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Trump announced the broad terms of an agreement last month that would exempt the UK from some of the US president's tariffs on steel and cars while increasing market access for other goods. The Prime Minister hailed the announcement as a major achievement, saying the UK was the first nation to reach such an agreement with Mr Trump. But the details are still being worked out ahead of a formal deal, and the Government hopes for an agreement within weeks. Mr Reynolds is expected to discuss implementing the deal during talks with US trade representative Jamieson Greer in Paris on Tuesday, where he is attending a meeting of the OECD. That meeting comes amid uncertainty about the future of Mr Trump's tariffs after a US court last week ruled many of them unlawful, before an appeals court reinstated the levies pending a further hearing. Last week also saw Mr Trump announce that he would double tariffs on steel to 50%, starting on Wednesday, and it remains unclear how the UK would be affected. Mr Reynolds's visit to Paris is part of a three-day trip, during which he is expected to meet other trade ministers and attend a G7 ministerial meeting before heading to Brussels for meetings with his EU counterparts. During the trip, the Trade Secretary will argue that the UK is a dependable partner in an era of increasing global volatility. He said: 'Our deals with the US, EU and India are proof that the UK is the most connected country in the world to do business. Along with our modern industrial strategy, our Plan for Change is making the UK a safe, stable bet in uncertain times. 'We recognise our relationship with G7 allies and EU counterparts must continue to evolve and deliver a better trading environment for our businesses and exporters. 'That's why we want to wipe away costly, business-blocking barriers and open up opportunities to grow our economy, create jobs and put more money in people's pockets.' Andrew Griffith, Conservative shadow business secretary, said: 'Labour told the British public we had a deal with the US – but one month on there is no deal in sight, meaning British businesses and workers continue to suffer because of Labour's failed negotiations. 'After snatching the winter fuel payment, lying about not increasing taxes, and misleading the public by saying the US trade deal was done, the public will rightly not trust a word Labour says. 'As all the other political parties wrangle over how to spend more taxpayers money, only the Conservatives are committed to being responsible with the public finances.'

Air Canada sparks wild debate with its VERY progressive Pride month ad

Air Canada made a high-flying bid to kick off Pride Month on Monday and found itself in a social media firestorm. The airline was met with overwhelming backlash after launching what it proudly touted as its first-ever 'all-2SLGBTQIA+ flight.' They were forced to shut off replies on the celebratory post on X within hours. The airline shared a glossy, 90-second video across its platforms, featuring employees from pilots and engineers to ground staff and cabin crew who identify across the 2SLGBTQIA+ spectrum - Two-Spirit (2S), Lesbian (L), Gay (G), Bisexual (B), Transgender (T), Queer or Questioning (Q), Intersex (I), Asexual (A). Each shared heartfelt reflections on what the historic flight meant to them. 'Our first all-2SLGBTQIA+ flight was a heartfelt celebration reflecting our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and equality, in the air and on the ground,' Air Canada posted on X. But what began as a polished attempt to champion inclusivity quickly unraveled. The comment section turned hostile almost immediately, flooded with negative responses that overwhelmed the likes and shares. Despite the airline's initial enthusiasm, by midday the replies were disabled, a rare and telling move signaling that Air Canada's Pride celebration had gone anything but smoothly. The airline shared the video across its platforms but was forced to disable comments after sparking a backlash In the video, Captain Maciej, who commands one of the airlines the Airbus A319's, candidly acknowledged the complexity of the moment. 'It was a bit of a range of emotions this morning coming here and getting dressed for this flight,' he said, before carefully reciting the lengthening acronym. 'Now let me get that one straight — a few letters have been added — 2SLGBTQIA+. I do identify with the progress flag. There's something in there that represents me as well, so there's a bit of joy having the opportunity to do this flight today.' Alongside him, First Officer Juan, speaking in French, called it 'a really special moment' that signaled visibility and tolerance. 'It has to do with visibility, with the possibility of telling everyone that we truly feel welcome and accepted for who we are.' Ground staff and engineers chimed in too, including one employee who said they joined the crew in honor of their daughter, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. The mood among the passengers seemed more muted who were only informed of the 'specialness' of the country's first all-2SLGBTQIA+ flight by gate agents Danny and Michael. Once onboard, Captain Maciej took to the intercom to frame the flight as a 'watershed moment in Canadian history,' ending his address with a cheeky reference from RuPaul's Drag Race: 'Shantay, you all stay!' Onboard, Captain Maciej took to the intercom to frame the flight as a 'watershed moment in Canadian history,' ending his address with a cheeky reference from RuPaul's Drag Race: 'Shantay, you all stay!' Yet the celebration quickly turned into a public relations debacle. While the airline attempted to showcase diversity, critics on social media hammered Air Canada for what they deemed to be tone-deaf virtue signaling. 'This is absolutely ridiculous — all we need and care about is competent employees, regardless of what they're doing in their bedrooms. Get a grip,' one commenter wrote bluntly. 'Why would we care who sleeps with whom? At this point in history, is this really necessary?' another user fumed. 'I'm sorry, but the safety and well-being of your passengers seems to come second place to virtue signaling,' another critic added. 'It will be a cold day in hell before I fly Air Canada.' The reaction revealed a deeper discontent simmering among the public and a backlash not just against this particular initiative, but against broader efforts to weave identity politics into commercial life. Many commenters expressed frustration that sexual identity, rather than professional competency, was being showcased. Many commenters expressed frustration that sexual identity, rather than professional competency, was being showcased. Six years ago Air Canada removed 'ladies and gentlemen' from its on-board announcements, replacing them with the more gender-neutral 'hello everyone' or 'tout le monde' in French. At the time, the airline said was meant to 'modernize' and 'remove specific references to gender' and defended the shift as part of an effort to make all passengers and employees feel respected. But Monday's reaction suggests that many customers remain unconvinced that such changes are necessary, or welcome.

The astonishing worth of home listings Americans are sitting on as market grinds to a halt

There are so many homes listed for sale in the US that the combined worth is a jaw-dropping number that has hit an all-time high. A total of $698 billion worth of homes are currently for sale across the country, Redfin reports. That number is up 20.3 percent from a year ago. It's the highest dollar amount ever sitting on the market at once, with many sellers offering concessions like slashing prices in order to move their home. The report is based on an analysis of listings going back through 2012. The total value of home listings has hit a record high because of the combination of growing inventory, slowing demand, and increasing home-sale prices. Housing supply is at a five-year high. There are many more sellers than buyers in the market. The total number of homes on the market nationwide rose 16.7 percent year over year in April to its highest level in 5 years, with the mortgage-rate lock-in effect easing and homeowners trying to cash out due to economic uncertainty. New listings increased 8.6 percent to a three-year high. Homes are also sitting on the market longer. The typical home that sold in April took 40 days to go under contract, five days longer than a year earlier. There's also a growing share of inventory that has been sitting on the market for longer than two months. Homebuying demand is falling. Home sales are declining, and Redfin agents in much of the country report that would-be buyers are backing off due to record-high monthly housing costs and widespread economic instability. Home prices are also on the up. The median U.S. home sale price rose 1.4 percent year over year to April. The total value of inventory is up by much more - 20.3 percent year over year. This signals that in recent years, the rising number of listings is a bigger factor in the total value of inventory than rising prices. There are nearly 500,000 more home sellers than buyers in today's housing market. The fact that so many homes are being listed without buyers out there to purchase them, along with continually rising prices, explains why there is an immense worth of unsold inventory sitting on the market. 'A huge pop of listings hit the market at the start of spring, and there weren't enough buyers to go around,' said Matt Purdy, a Redfin Premier agent in Denver. 'House hunters are only buying if they absolutely have to, and even serious buyers are backing out of contracts more than they used to. 'Buyers have a window to get a deal; there's still a surplus of inventory on the market, with sellers facing reality and willing to negotiate prices down.' Today's surplus of inventory is in stark contrast to the red-hot pandemic-era housing market when homes were in tight supply. The total value of listings dropped to $309 billion in January 2022, the lowest dollar value in Redfin's records, which date back to 2012. At the start of 2022, mortgage rates were sitting at a near-record-low of 3.1 percent, homebuyers were hungry, and home supply was at its lowest level on record. Homes were flying off the market in 24 days, compared to today's average pace of 40 days. In April, that number rose even higher, with 44 percent of listings that month on the market for at least 60 days without going under contract. That's up from 42.1 percent a year earlier, and the highest April share since 2020, when the start of the pandemic ground the housing market to a halt. The total value of that stale inventory (homes on the market for 60 plus days) is $331 billion, which accounts for nearly half of the dollar value of all inventory. That's up 20.5 percent year over year. 'The record-high dollar value of all homes listed for sale is one way to quantify this buyer's market,' said Chen Zhao, Redfin's head of economics research. 'Not only are there more homes for sale than there have been in five years, but the value of those homes is higher than it has ever been. 'We expect rising inventory, weakened demand, and the prevalence of stale supply to push home prices down 1 percent by the end of this year, which should improve affordability for buyers because incomes are still going up.'
