Capitals Coach's Blunt Take on Alex Ovechkin's Possible Retirement

Yahoo19-05-2025
The Washington Capitals were eliminated from the postseason Thursday night after a 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 at Capital One Arena.
The defeat ended a strong season that saw Washington top the Eastern Conference with 111 points, led by a strong combination of veterans and a new wave of young players.

Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov scored the game-winner with 1:59 left in regulation after receiving a pass from Sean Walker on a rush play.
Capitals goalie Logan Thompson said he lost sight of the puck before Svechnikov's shot slipped through, taking the blame for the Game 5 loss.
Washington tied the game in the first period on a goal from Anthony Beauvillier, but it was the last goal the team scored in the series. Seth Jarvis added an empty-netter for Carolina in the final seconds.
Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, who turned 39 last September, scored once in five games during the series.
'I know this series, the stats won't be flattering,' Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said about Ovechkin's play. 'I thought 'O' was great in playoffs.'

Carbery was asked about a potential early retirement by Ovechkin following another early postseason ending after last season's first-round exit.
'My understanding is he's under contract," Carbery said. "So he'll be back next year.'
Ovechkin is under contract through the end of the 2025-26 season as part of a five-year, $47.5 million extension signed in 2021.

Ovechkin dismissed the idea of retiring before completing his contract during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show last month.
'I'm not retiring,' Ovechkin said. 'I have one more year, and we'll see what's gonna happen.
"I love being around the boys, and as long as I can, I will try to stick around and put my great body in the NHL."

Ovechkin finished the playoffs with five goals in 10 games, with most of his production coming during the opening-round victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Studs and duds from the Dolphins' 24-24 preseason tie vs. the Bears

Positives outweighed the negatives for the Miami Dolphins in their 24-24 preseason tie with the Chicago Bears. While that was helped by the Bears resting the majority of their starters, including quarterback Caleb Williams, the Dolphins still did more than enough to give their fans optimism heading into the 2025 season. Here's who stood out most for the Dolphins on Sunday and who had a preseason opener to forget: Stud: First-team offensive line No, they didn't get the job done near the goal line on their first drive of the game. The list of negatives ends there, though. With Patrick Paul, James Daniels, and Jonah Savaiinaea taking over three of the starting roles and Larry Borom starting at right tackle in the place of the injured Austin Jackson, the Dolphins offense was rolling early. The Dolphins are hoping their rebuilt line can produce better results on the ground than the team managed in 2024. It wasn't perfect Sunday, but there's plenty of reason to be optimistic about their chances. Stud: Washington & Washington Tua Tagovailoa's first four completions Sunday were all to Malik Washington, including a clutch fourth down conversion. His fifth completion was to Tahj Washington. The latter finished the day as Miami's leading receiver with three receptions for 53 yards. Granted, with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle watching from the sideline, Tagovailoa's non-Washington options were limited. But the two 2024 draft picks looked like a pair of players primed to make an impact in their second NFL seasons. Dud: Backup quarterbacks Woof. Zach Wilson made a couple plays downfield, connecting with Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Tahj Washington for 35- and 34-yard pickups. But the former No. 2 overall draft pick struggled to get the ball out of his hand quickly and missed throws, including a lob to tight end Tanner Conner that should've been an easy score. It seemed Quinn Ewers was primed to hold Wilson's feet to the flame. But the seventh-round rookie's day was significantly worse than the veteran's. Ewers completed only five of his 18 passes and fumbled twice in Chicago territory. Stud: Dolphins special teams So far, so good for Craig Aukerman's squad. It didn't seem to matter who was back to return Sunday, they had room to race upfield into good field position. Dee Eskridge, A.J. Henning, and Erik Ezukanma took kick returns back 41, 38, and 37 yards, respectively. Malik Washington had a 19-yard punt return and Eskridge had a 16-yarder. Meanwhile, the Bears picked up no more than 22 yards on their kickoff returns and they didn't do much with 50- and 59-yard punts from Ryan Stonehouse and Jake Bailey, respectively. Dud: RB Jaylen Wright All signs pointed to a breakout year for Wright in 2025 after the team parted with Raheem Mostert earlier in the offseason. But the 2024 fourth-round pick has put together an underwhelming training camp and parlayed that into a ho-hum preseason debut. While he eventually broke loose for a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, Wright was stuffed on three straight runs inside the Bears' 2-yard line on the Dolphins' first drive. The second-year back finished with 16 yards on nine carries, a paltry 1.8 yards per attempt. The two running backs behind him on the depth chart shined, though. Alexander Mattison bulldozed through the defense on a 1-yard touchdown run and broke loose on a 21-yard reception before his day ended with an injury. Rookie Ollie Gordon II took over and recorded 33 rushing yards and 39 receiving yards. Wright's spot on the 53-man roster is safe, but he'll need to show more if he hopes to keep Mattison and Gordon from eating up his regular season touches. Stud: EDGE Derrick McLendon It's tough sledding to stand out as an edge rusher with the Dolphins right now. Buried behind Chop Robinson, Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and a couple veterans, McLendon has an uphill climb to earn a spot. But he played like a man possessed Sunday. While he picked up a roughing the passer penalty for landing on the Bears' Case Keenum, that's an easy mistake to forgive for a player who made so many plays in the backfield, including a sack. There simply aren't many roster spots left for the taking and McLendon may be the odd man out, regardless. But he made a strong case Sunday to stick around in Miami. Pennsylvania House makes last-ditch effort to stave off cuts at Philadelphia's public transit agency

Public Transit-Philadelphia HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's House of Representatives met hastily Monday to pass transportation funding legislation in a last-ditch effort to stave off deep service cuts at the Philadelphia region's public transit agency. The Democratic-backed bill passed the chamber, 108-95, over the objection of nearly every Republican in the chamber. The nearly $1 billion bill has the support of Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, and includes funding for highways, too. But it faces an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled Senate, where the GOP majority has resisted increasing aid for transit. The bill increases aid for transit agency operations by $292 million, or about 25% more, with the lion's share of the money going to the Philadelphia-based Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. SEPTA has said it cannot keep waiting for more aid before it makes cuts, which it says would be more drastic than any undertaken by a major transit agency in the United States. The nation's sixth-largest public transit system has warned that it will cut half its services by Jan. 1 and be unable to provide enhanced service for major tourist events next year. Those include FIFA World Cup matches in Philadelphia, events surrounding the celebration of the nation's 250th birthday, Major League Baseball's all-star game, the PGA Championship and NCAA March Madness games. The deadline push comes after two years of stalemate, amid transit struggles nationwide with rising costs and lagging ridership. SEPTA has said that, on Thursday, it will begin a 10-day preparation period for 20% across-the-board service cuts. Those take effect Aug. 24 and include eliminating bus routes with lower ridership and reducing the frequency of bus, trolley and rail services across the region. Under the plan, fares will then rise by 21.5% on Sept. 1 and, soon after, the agency will impose a hiring freeze. It will carry out another service cut on Jan. 1 that will mean that it will have eliminated half its current services, it has said. Democrats say shoring up public transit agencies around the state is critical to the economy and making sure people can get to work, school and medical appointments. Republicans have objected that transit agencies need to become more efficient, highways need more state funding and transit riders should pay higher fares. Transit agencies in Pittsburgh and elsewhere around Pennsylvania also say they are making cuts or raising fares, or both. ___ Follow Marc Levy on X at

Michigan's strong quarterback recruiting run continues with Peter Bourque in 2027 class

Michigan has its quarterback for the Class of 2027: Peter Bourque, a top-100 prospect and top-10 quarterback from Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass. Bourque had offers from Georgia, Oregon, Penn State and others and made multiple trips to Penn State's campus before committing to Michigan on Monday. Scouting services describe Bourque as a 6-foot-4 pro-style passer with a live arm and the mobility to make plays outside of the pocket. He's the No. 6 quarterback and the No. 75 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings for the 2027 class. Advertisement If all rankings hold, Michigan stands to sign a top-10 quarterback for the fourth consecutive cycle. The run began with Jadyn Davis, the No. 9 quarterback in the composite rankings for 2024, and continued with No. 1 overall prospect Bryce Underwood in 2025. Brady Smigiel, Michigan's 2026 quarterback commit, is the No. 10 QB in the composite rankings. This run of quarterback recruits is notable for Michigan after a dip in quarterback recruiting left the Wolverines shorthanded last season. It's also notable for Michigan to get its quarterback in the fold this early. J.J. McCarthy was the last quarterback to sign with Michigan after committing before his junior year of high school. Since then, Michigan's quarterback commitments have tended to come later in the cycle — or, in Underwood's case, right before signing day, when the class was largely complete. Michigan's 2027 class is still in its early stages. Bourque is Michigan's third commitment, joining offensive lineman Tristan Dare and in-state defensive lineman Louis Esposito. If Michigan can hold onto Bourque's commitment for the next two years, he could be a building block for another top-10 class. Spot the pattern.
