Prosecutors seek five-year jail sentence for Wander Franco in sexual abuse case
Dominican prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of five years for suspended Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco in his sexual abuse trial.
Prosecutors said Monday that there is sufficient evidence proving that Franco had a four-month relationship with a minor and was sending money to the girl's mother to consent to the relationship, according to the Associated Press.

'We are requesting a five-year prison sentence for the proven crime of sexual abuse against a minor,' prosecutor José Martínez said.
Franco is facing charges of sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking.

He is alleged to have 'kidnapped the victim for sexual purposes for several days' and had given the mother of the then-14-year-old victim 'large sums of money' to 'prevent her from reporting him.'
Sums of $68,500 and $35,000 were reportedly found during a raid of the mother's home and the money is alleged to have been from Franco.

The prosecution requested the five-year sentence they seek to be served in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The prosecutors are also pushing for a 10-year sentence for the girl's mother as they argue she sexually trafficked her daughter.
The girl's mother is currently facing money laundering charges and is under house arrest for her role.
Franco's lawyers sought dismissal of the case and to clear the 2023 MLB All-Star of the charges.
4 Wander Franco is currently on Major League Baseball's restricted list.
AP
The 24-year-old hasn't played a game for the Rays since Aug. 12, 2023, after social media posts went viral accusing him of the inappropriate relationship.
He's been on MLB's restricted list ever since.
'I've heard everything they're saying [during the reading of the indictment], but the only thing I'm going to say is [I hope] justice is done,' Franco said earlier this month. 'Let justice be done.'
Franco was in his third MLB season when the accusations hit.
He signed an 11-year, $182 million contract in 2021.

Red Sox follow up Rafael Devers trade with pitching move
The post Red Sox follow up Rafael Devers trade with pitching move appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox followed up their blockbuster Rafael Devers trade with an immediate move involving one of their new pitchers. The Red Sox shocked the MLB world as they swept their bitter rival, the New York Yankees. The front office dealt the three-time All-Star, who, despite having an adverse offseason, is one of the best hitters in the league. But Devers is now on the San Francisco Giants, and the Red Sox decided to get much younger with the talent they acquired in this trade. Advertisement One of the newest headline additions is left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison. The 23-year-old was among the top pitching prospects heading into the 2024 season. Harrison started in 24 games that year, compiling a record of 7-7 with a 4.56 ERA. The Red Sox, however, have announced that Harrison has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester. The other players coming onto the roster are 28-year-old pitcher Jordan Hicks and a pair of minor league prospects, outfielder James Tibbs and right-handed pitcher Jose Bello. Tibbs III is a very interesting prospect with high upside as the former No. 13 pick in last season's draft. Trading Devers additionally allows the Red Sox to get off his ten-year, $313,500,000 contract, which ends in 2033. That said, it's not surprising that Red Sox fans are perplexed at the timing of the move. Boston has won seven out of its past eight games, with five of those victories coming against the Yankees. This team just eclipsed the .500 win mark and was starting to look like the group that was supposed to break a three-year playoff drought. Devers, despite his attitude issues, is still in the middle of his prime and was on a tear after a slow start to the season. But what's done is done, and now the Red Sox will look to stay competitive even after losing their best hitter. Advertisement There is still plenty of talent at the plate for Boston. Alex Bregman has been terrific in his 51 games of action, while the Red Sox have several young prospects rounding into form. It won't be easy to stay competitive in the AL East with four teams ahead of Boston. The Yankees are still the divisional favorite, but the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays are slowly gaining traction in this race. It's a long road back to relevance in Boston, but despite the perplexing nature of the trade, the future should be bright for the franchise. Nick Gonzales extends his hot streak by going 5 for 5 as Pirates win 5-4 to cool off the Brewers
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Nick Gonzales went 5 for 5 with two RBIs, Isiah Kiner-Falefa tripled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Milwaukee 5-4 on Monday night to snap the Brewers' four-game winning streak. Tommy Pham hit a one-out single off Nick Mears (1-1) and scored when Kiner-Falefa sent a line drive into the right-field corner. Pham also hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Chad Patrick in the fourth. Kiner-Falefa's big hit came after Milwaukee slugger Christian Yelich tied the game in the fifth by connecting on a 3-0 pitch from Chase Shugart (4-3) for a two-run homer that stayed just inside the right-field foul pole. Yelich has batted .402 (41 for 102) with eight homers and 30 RBIs over his last 26 games. He is 16 for 30 with 14 RBIs in his past seven games. David Bednar worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth to earn his 11th save in as many opportunities. Bednar hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 13 appearances. Pittsburgh's Braxton Ashcraft made his first career start and allowed one hit and no walks over three innings, lowering his ERA to 1.23. Ashcraft primarily has been a starter in the minors, but all seven of his previous major league appearances came in relief. Key moment Milwaukee had a runner at first with nobody out in the ninth when Jake Bauers hit a long drive to right that looked like a potential walk-off homer before it went just foul. Two pitches later, Caleb Durbin attempted to steal second but overslid the bag and was tagged out. Bauers eventually walked, but Bednar struck out Joey Ortiz and retired Sal Frelick on a shallow fly to right. Key stat Gonzales is 12 for 22 over his last five games, raising his batting average from .226 to .320. Up next Left-hander Andrew Heaney (3-6, 3.94 ERA) starts for Pittsburgh and right-hander Freddy Peralta (7-4, 2.76) pitches for Milwaukee on Tuesday night. ___ AP MLB:

Acuña homers and Schwellenbach goes 7 innings as Braves beat skidding Mets again
NEW YORK (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. homered, Spencer Schwellenbach pitched seven strong innings and the Atlanta Braves held off the New York Mets 3-2 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series. Michael Harris II and Sean Murphy each had an early sacrifice fly for the Braves, who beat starter Paul Blackburn (0-2) for the second time in six days and improved to 4-0 against the Mets this season. Juan Soto hit a two-run homer that pulled the Mets within one, but he struck out against left-hander Dylan Lee with runners at the corners to end the eighth. New York has dropped nine of 10, including a three-game sweep by its NL East rival in Atlanta last week. Schwellenbach (6-4) allowed consecutive singles in the third for New York's first two hits. The scoring threat ended when third baseman Austin Riley made a diving catch of Brandon Nimmo's popup near the tarp in foul territory. Nimmo walked with two outs in the sixth and Soto drove a sinker into the left-center stands for his 17th homer of the year and eighth in 21 games this month. Schwellenbach struck out four and completed seven innings for the eighth time in 16 starts. He took over the major league lead in innings pitched with 103 2/3. Lee retired all four batters he faced for his second career save, snapping Atlanta's team-record streak of 31 games without one. It was the Braves' first save since May 16. Key moment Lee took over for Raisel Iglesias with two outs in the eighth and needed eight pitches to strike out Soto, falling behind 3-1 in the count before fanning the slugger for the third time in nine career at-bats. Key stat Since his season debut on May 23, Acuña is the only qualified batter in the majors with an on-base percentage over .500. He is 40 for 101 with 21 walks. Up next Atlanta RHP Spencer Strider (2-5, 3.89 ERA) starts Tuesday night against RHP Frankie Montas, set to come off the injured list for his Mets debut. ___ AP MLB:
