Harimau Malaya return to Bukit Jalil for crunch Vietnam clash

KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya will return to the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil for their Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10, in what is expected to be a blockbuster showdown.
The national team opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Nepal on March 25, a match played at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri.
Harimau Malaya chief executive officer Rob Friend believes the return to Bukit Jalil will offer more than just home advantage - it's a moment to rally the nation.
"We're excited to welcome Vietnam to Bukit Jalil on June 10 for what promises to be a thrilling encounter," said Friend.
"This is more than just a qualifier. It's a moment for Malaysians to unite behind Harimau Malaya and show the strength of our national spirit.
"We are building something special, so we're excited to see our fans at Bukit Jalil and make it a night to remember."
With a capacity of over 80,000, the National Stadium is expected to provide the electric atmosphere Malaysia need to overcome one of Southeast Asia's strongest teams.
Vietnam, who thrashed Laos 5-0 in their opener, lead Group C on goal difference, with Malaysia also on three points.
The last time world No. 131 Malaysia played at the iconic Bukit Jalil venue was in last year's Asean Cup, where they were held to a goalless draw by Singapore in front of more than 31,000 fans.

Dutch-born footballer impressed by Malaysia's Super League

KUALA LUMPUR: The Netherlands-born playmaker, Hector Hevel, is impressed by the standard of Malaysia's Super League. The 29-year-old said the competition was better than he expected. Hevel, who recently debuted for Harimau Malaya, confirmed he will be signing for Johor Darul Ta'zim following his stint in Portugal with Portimonense. "You can tell the quality of the Super League by the local boys in the national team," said Hevel. "They have a certain level and most of them play in the Super League, so it says something about the quality here." Hevel, whose grandfather is from Melaka, has featured in top-flight football across Europe. Still, he noted that the Super League here holds its own in terms of competitiveness and technical ability. "Maybe the rhythm is a little faster in Europe, but overall, football is football," he said. "Every country has its own style. What matters is how well teams execute their ideas." Hevel made an instant impact on debut for Malaysia, scoring against Nepal in Harimau Malaya's opening Asian Cup qualifying match in March. His performance quickly endeared him to fans and showed that he could be a key figure for both club and country. Hevel will be counted upon to lead Malaysia's midfield against Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier in Bukit Jalil on June 10.

Machucha missed birth of first child to be with Malaysian team ahead of Vietnam clash

Latest Malaysian footballer Imanol Machuca. PETALING JAYA: The country comes first rather than family for mixed heritage footballer Imanol Machuca. The 25-year-old missed the birth of his first born baby boy back in Argentina in order to be with the national football team for the all-important 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam on Tuesday. His wife Ailen Bernardi, a personal trainer, gave birth at the start of the week but Imanol was already on board the plane on a 30-hour journey from Roldan. "My beautiful baby boy," Machuca announced on his Instagram. And Machuca certainly has all the motivation he needs to help Malaysia end their long winless drought against Vietnam. Machuca, a winger who plays for Velez Sarsfield on loan from Brazilian side Fortaleza, is one of the five Malaysians abroad who joined the national team led by Australian coach Peter Cklamovski earlier this week. The others are strikers Joao Figueiredo and Rodrigo Holgado; and defenders Jon Iranzabal and Facundo Garces. "Malaysia have given all the best to me since I arrived to join the training camp earlier in the week. "I genuinely feel it is something special to represent the Harimau Malaya. It is a big honour for me and I will give it my all," added Machuca, who are among the youngest mixed heritage players in the national team. Cklamovski yesterday released the list of 30 players for the third and final phase of training, leaving out Syamer Kutty Abba, Ahmad Zikri Khalil and Haqimi Azim. The final list includes Dion Cools, who just arrived from Japan on Friday to join the training camp. Malaysia's last victory over Vietnam came in 2014. Since then, the Golden Star Warriors have won seven of their eight meetings in all competitions, with one match ending in a draw. Their most recent encounter was a 3-0 defeat for Malaysia in the 2022 AFF Cup group stage - now renamed the Asean Championship. Both nations sit level at the top of Group F with three points each, having won their opening matches. The Team Goalkeepers: Azri Ghani, Haziq Nadzli, Sikh Izhan, Syihan Hazmi. Defenders: Corbin Ong, Daniel Ting, Dion Cools, Facundo Garces, Gabriel Palmero, Harith Haiqal, Jon Irazabal, Junior Eldstal, Matthew Davies, Quentin Cheng, Shahrul Saad, Ubaidullah Shamsul. Midfielders: Afiq Fazail, Endrick Dos Santos, Hector Hevel, Nazmi Faiz, Nooa Laine, Stuart Wilkin. Strikers: Arif Aiman Hanapi, Faisal Halim, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Paulo Josue, Rodrigo Holgado, Romel Morales, Safawi Rasid.

Dos Santos speaks the Harimau language

KUALA LUMPUR: Before instructions get lost in translation or the ball gets lost in transition, national footballer Endrick dos Santos is doing his part in helping the disparate Harimau Malaya team get going. While local TV commentators are still trying to get used to remembering or pronouncing the plethora of foreign-sounding names, fans must be wondering about communication among players and coaches on the field. In this aspect, the Brazil-born dos Santos believes he can help members of the newly assembled Malaysia team connect and click with one another. Fluent in English, Spanish, and increasingly proficient in Bahasa Malaysia, dos Santos plays a really important role. He is the go-to translator, the cultural bridge between East and West, the unifying voice in the rojak-like national team that aim to turn incoherence into cohesion. As Malaysia face Vietnam in a crucial Asian Cup qualifier on Tuesday, the national players, cobbled from all corners of the world, are brushing up on team work, learning and understanding each other's style and rhythm. Recently, the national team announced the inclusion of five more foreign-born heritage players: Rodrigo Holgado (Argentina), Imanol Machuca (Argentina), Facundo Garces (Argentina), Jon Irazabal (Spain) and Joao Figueiredo (Brazil), The naturalised dos Santos, who has donned Harimau Malaya colours since 2023. said: "It's a little difficult for them to communicate, but the others and I speak a little English, Spanish, and Malay. So, we try to help each other, to pass on to them whatever is important. "We try to communicate during every training session. I try to help my teammates adapt faster." But ultimately, fans around the world like to speak only one language — the language of winning.
