Dos Santos speaks the Harimau language
While local TV commentators are still trying to get used to remembering or pronouncing the plethora of foreign-sounding names, fans must be wondering about communication among players and coaches on the field.
In this aspect, the Brazil-born dos Santos believes he can help members of the newly assembled Malaysia team connect and click with one another.
Fluent in English, Spanish, and increasingly proficient in Bahasa Malaysia, dos Santos plays a really important role. He is the go-to translator, the cultural bridge between East and West, the unifying voice in the rojak-like national team that aim to turn incoherence into cohesion.
As Malaysia face Vietnam in a crucial Asian Cup qualifier on Tuesday, the national players, cobbled from all corners of the world, are brushing up on team work, learning and understanding each other's
style and rhythm.
Recently, the national team announced the inclusion of five more foreign-born heritage players: Rodrigo Holgado (Argentina), Imanol Machuca (Argentina), Facundo Garces (Argentina), Jon Irazabal (Spain) and Joao Figueiredo (Brazil),
The naturalised dos Santos, who has donned Harimau Malaya colours since 2023. said: "It's a little difficult for them to communicate, but the others and I speak a little English, Spanish, and Malay. So, we try to help each other, to pass on to them whatever is important.
"We try to communicate during every training session. I try to help my teammates adapt faster."
But ultimately, fans around the world like to speak only one language — the language of winning.

Premier League has no say on delay over Man City charges, says chief exec
LONDON: Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said his "frustration" at waiting for a verdict in a series of financial charges against Manchester City is irrelevant as the case is in the hands of an independent hearing. The Premier League issued more than 100 charges against City in February 2023 related to alleged breaches of its financial rules and with allegedly failing to co-operate with the subsequent investigation. The case was heard by a commission between September and December last year but no decision has been published. The issue continues to hang over the league as the 2025/26 season gets underway this weekend, but Masters said his organisation has no control over when a verdict will be reached. "Once the allegations, the charge has been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected, and they are then in charge of the process and its timings," Masters told Sky Sports News. "They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that, over it or its timing. "And that's right, if you think from an independence point of view, that there is independent people making those decisions, and we just have to be waiting. "My frustration is irrelevant, really. I mean, I just have to wait, and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient." City deny any wrongdoing and have said they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to clear their name. But if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty, or even be kicked out of the Premier League. City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons stretching from 2009/10 to 2017/18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13. They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010/11 and 2015/16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023. Since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City's fortunes have been transformed on the field from also-rans to the dominant force in English football. Eight of their 10 top-flight league titles have come since 2012 and they also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023. — AFP

Barcelona's Ter Stegen validated as long-term injury by La Liga
MADRID: Barcelona announced Wednesday the long-term injury validation of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen by the Spanish league, meaning the club can register new signing Joan Garcia without breaking financial fair play rules. "LaLiga's Medical Committee has ruled that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury meets the long-term injury criteria established by current regulations," Barcelona said in a statement on their website. "The club will proceed tomorrow (Thursday) to immediately formalise the registration of player Joan Garcia." After two seasons marred by serious injuries, Barcelona captain Ter Stegen underwent back surgery last month. However, the 33-year-old had refused up until last Friday to release his medical details as Barcelona tried to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury, which would allow them to deduct part of his pay from their official wage bill. The Catalan club had planned to use the German's long-term absence to register their new recruits while remaining within the financial fair play rules. In addition to the recruitment of 24-year-old shotstopper Garcia, Barcelona extended the contract of veteran Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny this summer. — AFP
