Sabally, Thomas power Mercury over Storm in season opener without Copper
The Phoenix Mercury's post-Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner era began with a bang in their 81-59 blowout victory at home over the Seattle Storm on May 17.
The regular season debut for their new Big 3 of Alyssa Thomas, Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper together was delayed. Just hours before Phoenix's season-opening home game against the Seattle Storm, the Mercury announced that Copper underwent successful arthroscopic left knee surgery and will return in the next four to six weeks.

"I was sad, honestly," Sabally said after the game about when she first heard Copper was sidelined through June. "She's just someone that's so vocal on the court, off the court, and genuinely such a good soul. You hate to see someone down like that, but God always shows you when it's time to rest.
"I think she had an amazing offseason (in Unrivaled). She had an amazing Olympic year. Now she will just take time to heal and she'll be back in no time," Sabally continued.
Thomas and Sabally compensated for the Mercury's top returning scorer's absence by shining in their debuts for Phoenix.
Sabally had the game-high 27 points, added six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Thomas produced 20 points, seven rebounds, a team-high five assists, and two steals. Sabally started hot by hitting six of her first nine attempts, including three from deep, and Thomas made five of her first eight.

Seattle's top performers were former Mercury All-Star Skylar Diggins (team-high 21 points, four assists, three rebounds) and Nneka Ogwumike (12 points, seven rebounds).
"It would too bold to let one of them go off because they could easily go for 40 any night," Sabally said. "You definitely have to keep both honest and contain them, but we did an amazing job on Nneka. And I mean Sky's excellent on those left-hand drives and those pull-up shots, but we'll take the pull-up shots. We really executed what we wanted to do and I think you could see that."
After the glitz and pyrotechnics of the Mercury's elaborate team introduction, Thomas ignited the team's energy to match the hyped X-Factor crowd. Last season's MVP candidate scored the first bucket from a slick spin move off the dribble at the nail and split two defenders to get into the paint for a smooth layup finish.
"Anytime that you have a crowd that's behind you like that, it just fuels you more," Thomas said. "As you can see, we were excited on the court within ourselves and to have the crowd behind us just as excited, the X-Factor is a great fan base."
Phoenix led Seattle all night, held a double-digit advantage for most of the game, and was up by 14 points twice during the first half. After Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts pulled out Thomas, Sabally and his other starters at 4 minutes left, the margin stretched to 27 at 1:43 remaining.

The Mercury were also without their forward/center Natasha Mack (lower back), who's sidelined for approximately two to three weeks. Mack was the Mercury's backup big for Griner last season, and averaged 3.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists through 11 starts and 40 games played.
Despite being shorthanded, Tibbetts said during his pregame media availability that Seattle's physical style of play with their size and length requires his team to outrebound them collectively.
The Mercury outhustled the Storm on the glass 38-29, shot 51.7% and held the Storm to a meager 33.3%, shared the ball well with 19 assists on 30 makes, and dominated the paint 42-30. The Mercury's only drawback was their 17 turnovers that allowed 18 points, whereas the Storm had 13 giveaways that conceded 16.
"I thought our defense was fantastic," Tibbetts said. "Our on-ball defense, our pick-and-roll coverage, our toughness, our grit and you can't be a good defense without finishing possessions. So we did that and that's important."

Steelers CB Beanie Bishop Shares Hilarious Story on Interaction with Aaron Rodgers
Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop returning an interception against the New York Jets on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop shared a humorous story on his interaction with Aaron Rodgers during the four-time league MVP's visit at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in March. 'He just made a joke 'cause me and Cory Trice was working out and we had finished a workout,' Bishop said. 'He was like, 'Y'all going keep f'ing around [or] y'all going to work out?' Advertisement Aaron Rodgers kept his promise and autographed the two interception balls from Bishop in last year's meeting between the Steelers and New York Jets. Bishop revealed that he made sure to thank the future Hall of Fame quarterback for his kind gesture. 'I was like, 'Thanks bro for signing those balls.' It meant a lot just being a fan of the game,' Bishop said. 'Being a competitor and growing up and watching football and things like that, it's one of those guys that you watch as a kid.' The Steelers continue to wait on Rodgers' looming decision, which has dragged along for over two months. If the Rodgers does land with the Black and Gold, Bishop will welcome him with open arms. Advertisement 'I think it'd be a cool thing,' Bishop said of the possibility of being teammates with Rodgers. 'To have another guy that's ultimately going to the Hall of Fame.' Bishop was considered a weakness heading into last year's Steelers-Jets game. Many thought Aaron Rodgers would pick the rookie apart, but it was the opposite. Bishop became the first undrafted rookie in NFL history to have a multi-INT game against a multi-time former MVP QB, per OptaSTATs. Bishop was nominated for Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week for his standout performance. In addition to the two interceptions, Bishop had six tackles and one tackle for loss in the Steelers' 37-15 win over the Jets. Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe provided reporting from Pittsburgh. Although these are still voluntary, a few noteworthy names are absent from the Baltimore Ravens facilities during OTAs.
Although these are still voluntary, a few noteworthy names are absent from the Baltimore Ravens facilities during OTAs. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens have begun the second phase of this offseason's organized team activities (OTAs) this week. Advertisement Although these are still voluntary meetings and practices, a few noteworthy names are absent from the facilities. According to The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec, that list includes starters Lamar Jackson, Kyle Hamilton, Rashod Bateman and Kyle Van Noy among others. Most of these players, of course, are veteran returners to the team and may not benefit a whole lot from these preliminary meetings like younger players would. However nice it would be for them to attend practice and get re-acclimated with the program, these workouts and meeting sessions are still voluntary. For Jackson, it's worth remembering that he is in line for a contract extension that has a strong likelihood to be the richest in NFL history. Advertisement The current highest-paid player in the NFL is Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who signed a four-year, $240 million deal back in September of this past year. CBS Sports' Joel Corry thinks Jackson could eclipse that annual $60 million mark ... whenever that may come. "Jackson should also make it clear to the Ravens that by waiting until next year to do a deal, the growth in the salary cap from 2025 to 2026 will need to be taken into account," Corry wrote. "For example, if the 2026 salary cap is set at $302.5 million, then the deal would have to be at $70 million per year because that would reflect the 34.56% salary cap inflation from 2023." $70 mil per year is an astronomical number, but there isn't a player in the NFL with as comfortable job security as the multi-time MVP winner. Without Lamar, the Ravens would not get close to sniffing a Super Bowl ... so the organization recognizes the value he brings and is expected to give him his due. This absence from OTAs likely isn't related to his contract situation, however, as Jackson is technically under contract until after 2027. Advertisement He, along with the rest of his veteran teammates, are expected to report to mandatory minicamps that begin on June 17. In the meantime, head coach John Harbaugh has liked what he's seen from those taking part in OTAs. "We all know what we're here for, and we have a mission that we're trying to accomplish," Harbaugh said earlier this offseason. "To see the guys out there working as hard as they are and as hard as they have been means a lot. I love the way these guys work."
