Dalit techie hacked to death in Tamil Nadu hate crime
The incident took place on Sunday evening when the victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, had gone to a clinic in Tirunelveli town to meet his schoolmate and suspected girlfriend, S Subhashini, who worked there as a practitioner of ancient Siddha medicine, to consult her regarding his ailing grandfather's treatment. The accused, Surjit, is Subhashini's brother and son of sub-inspectors — Saravanan and Krishnakumari — who are attached to a battalion in Manimuthar in Tirunelveli .
According to police, Subhashini's family belongs to the dominant Maravar community in southern Tamil Nadu, while Ganesh belongs to the Devendra Kula Vellalar community — a sub-caste of Dalits. 'The victim and the accused's sister were schoolmates and had known each other for a long time... The woman's family had objected to their relationship,' said a police officer aware of the matter, requesting anonymity.
On Sunday evening, Subhashini's brother Surjit met Ganesh outside the clinic, where an argument broke out between the two following which Surjit allegedly hacked Ganesh to death with a sickle. Ganesh's body was later recovered just 200 metres away from the clinic. The post mortem was completed at the Tirunelveli government hospital on Monday.
In a complaint lodged with police, Ganesh's mother S Tamilselvi has accused Subhashini's parents of issuing repeated threats to her son to stop seeing their daughter.
Victim's father Chandrashekar said: 'My son is an innocent person. The woman asked my son to come to the hospital. The accused took my son out, threw chilli powder on his face and pulled out a machete to kill him... The government should immediately expel his mother and father from service. We will protest and not take my son's body unless action is taken against them.'
Based on the parents' complaint, Surjit and his parents have been booked under various sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the BNS.
'The prime accused has been arrested. Further Investigations are underway,' said a second police officer.

Couple, child rescued from bonded labour in Madurai; employer booked
Madurai: A couple in bonded labour and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were rescued from Ananjiyur village in Madurai East taluk on Thursday by revenue officials. The couple, Raghu, 21, and Radha, 25, from Perumangalam village in Peravurani taluk, Thanjavur, worked without pay for more than five months to repay a loan of 30,000. A ccording to officials, the couple borrowed the money from a person in Thanjavur but were unable to repay the debt after their house was gutted in a fire accident. The lender subsequently handed them to another person in Madurai, who in turn sent them to Tirupathi, 40, of Angadimangalam village in Madurai. Tirupathi forced them to work in cattle grazing, claiming their loan escalated to 2.5 lakh due to high interest. Following a tip-off, a team led by Melur RDO T Sangeetha and east taluk Tahsildar Manesh Kumar, carried out an inspection and rescued the three. A complaint was filed at the Silaiman police station. Tirupathi was booked under provisions of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act. The RDO said, "They (couple) initially borrowed 30,000 two years ago but were coerced into accepting an inflated amount of 2.5 lakh charged with exorbitant interest. For the last five months, they worked without wages and were given just one or two meals a day, and it is a clear case of bonded labour, added the RDO. She added that an interim compensation of 30,000 will be disbursed to the couple within a few days. "They currently do not have a bank account, but arrangements are being made to facilitate the payment," she said. Officials found that the couple had no proper agreement or documents related to the debt. They were unaware of the exact identities of those from whom they borrowed the money, except for some handwritten details on a piece of paper. Man lynched over suspicion of scooter theft in Gandhinagar
Ahmedabad: A 30-year-old man from Aravalli district was allegedly beaten to death by three men in Gandhinagar who suspected him of stealing a scooter. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, according to an FIR filed with Dabhoda police by the victim's elder brother, who accused the trio of lynching. The next morning, Kalpesh's family received a call from Dabhoda police station stating that he met with an accident and was admitted to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital. Later, they were informed that Kalpesh died during treatment.
