ICC Champions Trophy: Prize pot to climb to $6.9m
The Champions Trophy prize pot will increase to $6.9m this year, a jump of 53% from 2017, with the winners receiving $2.24m, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday.
Holders Pakistan will host an ICC showpiece event for the first time in 28 years. The eight-team quadrennial One-Day International (ODI) tournament kicks off on February 19 in Karachi and the final will be held on March 9.
There will be 15 matches across Pakistan and Dubai, after India refused to travel to rivals Pakistan, instead agreeing to play their matches in the neutral Gulf city.
The runners-up will get $1.12m, and the losing semifinalists will be awarded $560,000 each. Teams that finished fifth or sixth will each earn $350,000 while the seventh and eighth-placed sides take home $140,000.
The 2021 edition of the Champions Trophy was scrapped by the ICC in 2016, which wanted only one major tournament in each of the sport's three international formats, prioritising the 50-over World Cup. The decision was reversed in late 2021.
The 2023 edition of the quadrennial 10-team ODI World Cup, won by Australia after they beat India in Gujarat, featured a larger number of group-stage and knockout matches and offered a $4m prize for the winning team from a pot of $10m.
Pakistan beat Australia in the final at Lord's in London, United Kingdom, to claim the trophy when the tournament was last staged in 2017.

Japan score six in World Cup qualifier to match record against Indonesia
Daichi Kamada has scored twice as Japan has rounded off their successful World Cup qualifying campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia in Osaka. Kamada, an FA Cup winner with Crystal Palace in England this season, struck twice in Tuesday's first half as already qualified Japan finished their campaign as Group C winners, scoring 30 goals in their 10 matches. Kamada opened the scoring in the 15th minute, heading home from a Mito cross. The Palace forward turned provider for his team's second, combining with Kubo before the Real Sociedad man fired past Indonesia goalkeeper Emil Audero. Indonesia lost defender Kevin Diks to injury midway through the first half, and his replacement Yakob Sayuri lasted only 15 minutes before he also had to go off after a clash of heads. Kamada scored Japan's third on the stroke of half-time, waltzing through the Indonesia defence before tucking the ball over Audero. Morishita volleyed home at the back post in the 55th minute for his first international goal. Machino and Hosoya also got on the scoresheet as Japan continued to squeeze Indonesia until the final whistle.

Ronaldo set to stay at Al Nassr with another World Cup looming
dpa Munich Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly ended speculation about his club future, saying he will continue to play at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr as he also probably also sets his sights on next year's World Cup. 'Nothing is going to change. Playing at Al-Nassr? Yes,' he was quoted as saying early Monday by multiple reports after captaining Portugal to the Nations League title in Munich. Ronaldo, 40, joined Al-Nassr in 2023 after falling out with coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. His current contract is until June 30. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had recently suggested that Ronaldo could move to a side qualified for the upcoming Club World Cup. Ronaldo on Saturday confirmed talks but said he won't be at the tournament in the United States. On Sunday, Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties to give Ronaldo and his team a third trophy, the others being at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. 'I have many titles but there is nothing better than winning with the national team,' the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said. Ronaldo scored the 2-2 equalizer in the 61st minute which eventually set up the shoot-out, but came off in the 88th with an apparant thigh problem. He had also scored the 2-1 winner in Wednesday's semi-final against Germany. The two goals brought his tally to 138, from 221 caps, which are both world records in the men's game. Coach Robert Martinez said that Ronaldo had played a 'decisive role' in winning the title, after some had expressed scepticism whether the veteran still had a lot to give. Martinez has also come under criticism, mainly from the Portuguese media, over not always glorious performances of the team. Ronaldo named the criticism 'unfair,' and Portugal did indeed impress in Germany with well-executed tactics that stopped the resurgent host team and than also the classy Spaniards around their teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Ronaldo won the duel of the generations agianst the 17-year-old Yamal on the night but they may meet again at next year's World Cup, a title still eluding Ronaldo. Sunday's final showed that Ronaldo can still electrify the fans, and the hosting Americans, Canadians and Mexicans are expected to share the excitement in what would be his sixth World Cup. For Nuno Mendes, the Man of the Match on Sunday with a goal and assist as well as containing Yamal, there is no doubt about Ronaldo's value. 'He helps us a lot. He has a winning mentality. He is a role model. We are happy to have him,' Mendes said.

Alisson Becker expecting Liverpool to take up contract option
