‘Bit of a needle': Haas' Origin prep reveal
Haas was among several Blues players who watched or only took slight part in the opening training session at the Blue Mountains base on Wednesday, including Hudson Young (groin) and Brian To'o (knee).
Key playmakers Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai did some light drills with a week to ramp up preparations, and Haas was adamant that he was sticking to a plan that would have him ready to play.
'I didn't do much today, I had a bit of a needle and am just resting up for the game,' Haas told media on Wednesday.
'I think I'm just being soft. I'll do a bit more tomorrow, all good.
'I've had a back problem all year, I've been a bit sore, the staff at Brisbane thought it was best I had a needle before I come in (to camp) and feel good for the game.' Payne Haas watches his NSW teammates train on Wednesday. Rohan Kelly Credit: News Corp Australia
Haas said he was being 'transparent' with NSW team officials and he'd spent days in between games for the Brisbane Broncos resting to ensure he was fighting fit come game day.
'People are looking after me well and I've got full faith in that,' he said.
'It's all part of the game, You are never 100 per cent and I just want to go out there and do his job.
'I know my prep, I know my job and I want to go out the and do the job well.'
Haas said himself, Young and To'o would join in training on Thursday.
Penrith flyer To'o remains the major injury concern and needs to show by the weekend that he's ready to play. Jacob Kiraz, who is on standby as 18th man, did take part in Wednesday's session.
But Haas said he To'o was a 'freak' and would be ready come game time next Wednesday.

‘The big fella had a few tears': Injuries inspire unsung Broncos' debutant
In a side decimated by players withdrawn for State of Origin duties, the Broncos are set to usher in an unheralded debutant for a crucial clash with the Bulldogs. Ben Talty arrived from the North Sydney Bears midseason on a train-and-trial deal through to the end of 2026, having amassed 85 games in the New South Wales Cup. Named at 19th man for Friday night, he will replace Corey Jensen, out with a calf injury. Talty's call-up continues coach Michael Maguire's habit of forging careers. 'We've got some good stories. Ben Talty came in here about a month ago, he's put his head down and is going to be on the bench,' Maguire said. 'He reminded me about how special rugby league is. Loading 'I was able to sit with him yesterday and talk about how he was going to debut. The big fella had a few tears and gave me a big squeeze, and it actually gave me a real sense of what it really means to play. 'He's been trying, he's 26 now, so it just goes to show how special it is what our game brings. He's a great fella, he's a middle forward and done a bit of time down at the Storm.

Josh Papali'i relishing Maroons' State of Origin recall against Blues in series decider
He has just become a father for the fourth time, but Josh Papali'i was never going to turn down an opportunity to make a State of Origin return for Queensland. The 33-year-old was in hospital with wife Mesepa and baby son Jeremiah when Maroons coach Billy Slater called to ask if he wanted to make a 24th and final Origin appearance. "I missed the first couple of calls because my little fella and my wife were still in hospital at the time and there were a few complications with my little one," Papali'i said. "I spoke to Bill when I had that little break and he asked me one question, if I had one more game in me, and I replied with an 'F-bomb' and said, 'Yes, I had one more left'. "Hopefully I can go out there next week and put on a good performance." Papali'i last played for the Maroons in 2022 and had retired from representative football. He is playing his final season in Canberra this year and has been in career-best form. The Maroons are looking for extra punch in the middle for the Origin decider in Sydney on July 9 and Papali'i was the obvious choice for one last hurrah. "It's definitely my last. I'm obviously just looking forward to it and soaking in the week," Papali'i said. "I'm still buzzing just being back in maroon. I just need to work hard and turn up next week and hopefully perform. "I was happily retired. I was happy to just slug away down in Canberra. We're going pretty well down in the capital as well. "When I saw the first couple of missed calls (from Slater), I just didn't know what to expect. And obviously I spoke to Bill and it's very nice to be back." ABC Sport will have live blog coverage of the State of Origin series. In camp on the Sunshine Coast with the Maroons squad, Papali'i was as refreshed on Thursday as he had ever been in recent times. "It's the best sleep I've had in a few weeks," Papali'i grinned. "Last night was good. I had one of the boys come and wake me up." AAP
