Why are Gwyneth Paltrow and TikTokkers shunning sunscreen, despite the science? Fear over unknown chemicals and a distrust of commercial brands is fuelling DIY alternatives to proper sun care
When
Gwyneth Paltrow shared her skincare routine in a 2021 YouTube video for Vogue, fans were captivated – until she dropped her take on SPF. She wrapped up with a dab of Tinted Sunscreen SPF 30, casually mentioning, 'I'm not a head-to-toe latherer of sunscreen, but I like to put some on my nose and the area where the sun really hits.' A few dainty dabs, and that was it. Viewers didn't miss a beat, pointing out that a light tap of sunscreen won't exactly fend off UV rays, sparking a spirited debate online.

For a minute, it seemed like sunscreen was a done deal: essential, end of story. Then
TikTok popped up with a plot twist – 'Is sunscreen actually harmful?' Suddenly, SPF sceptics were everywhere, tossing around claims of toxicity like it was the newest health fad. The beauty industry is now in full-on damage control mode, trying to keep up as the anti-sunscreen train gains momentum.

Sunscreen's role once seemed obvious, but with TikTok setting trends, SPF has somehow lost its shine. Influencers are hyping unprotected sun exposure and even home-made sunscreens, setting back years of progress in sun safety and giving dermatologists a collective headache. Chinni Choi, NARS Hong Kong lead artist, warns that skipping SPF 'can accelerate skin ageing, as ageing slows down the renewal of epidermal cells, leading to keratin build-up and decreased cellular activity'. Fellow NARS artist
Phoenix Mok agrees, noting, 'Especially for facial skin, not using sunscreen can cause ultraviolet rays to stimulate the underlying melanocytes, leading to pigmentation and the formation of dark spots.'

The anti-sunscreen movement seems to trace back to claims that SPF is secretly toxic. TikTok creators have called out ingredients such as oxybenzone and benzene, painting them as villains. Sure, a few sunscreens were pulled due to benzene contamination, but here's the thing: benzene wasn't meant to be there in the first place. 'While there have been concerns about ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, particularly regarding coral reef effects, the FDA-approved ingredients in sunscreens have decades of safety data,' explains
Dr Ahmad Chaudhry , dual board-certified dermatologist at Scandinavian Biolabs. So unless someone's mixing up their own 'natural' SPF in the kitchen, commercially available sunscreens are the safest bet.
One big concern is that sunscreen leads to vitamin D deficiency. Yes, our bodies produce vitamin D from sunlight, but we don't need to roast ourselves to get enough. Felix Law, a senior trainer at Laura Mercier Hong Kong, clarifies: 'While sunscreen may reduce the amount of vitamin D produced in the skin, it does not prevent all vitamin D synthesis.' So even with regular sunscreen, you're still getting what you need. 'The impact of sunscreen on vitamin D absorption is actually limited,' adds Choi. And just to be safe, there's always food. 'We can also obtain vitamin D through our daily diet, so maintaining a balanced and healthy diet allows us to get enough vitamin D without deficiency, even when applying sunscreen,' says Mok.
Lab-tested sunscreen is far superior to anything you can concoct in your home. Photo: Handout
And then there's tanning – the age-old pursuit of that sun-kissed glow. Some influencers are out here calling unprotected sun exposure 'natural' and 'healthy,' but dermatologists have long warned that tanning is really just skin damage in disguise. That bronze glow? It's the skin screaming, 'Help!' Each tan adds up, leading to premature ageing and raising the risk of skin cancers like melanoma, known for its aggressive nature.

NBA Finals: Haliburton's heroics help Pacers steal last-second win over Thunder in Game 1
Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton sank the game-winning basket in the final second to give the Pacers a stunning 111-110 fightback victory over Oklahoma City in Friday's opening game of the NBA Finals. Haliburton, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, gave the Pacers their only lead of the game on a dramatic 21-foot jump shot with 0.3 of a second remaining to deliver a shocker after Indiana had trailed by 15 points with 9:42 remaining. 'We got the stop and coach trusts us in those moments to not call a timeout, trusts me in those moments, guys trust me and just trying to make a play,' Haliburton said of the last shot. 'Basketball is fun, man, winning is fun,' he added in an on-court interview. 'That's a great win for us.' With a game-closing 14-2 run, the Pacers seized a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, with game two on Sunday at Oklahoma City. Jon Hamm's cool, classic watch collection: the Mad Men star wore a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso and Omega Seamaster on the show, but his personal collection includes Panerai, Rolex
Jon Hamm has earned a reputation for playing renegade characters – the kind of guys who seem perfectly put together and in control, yet are always just one misstep away from unravelling. Case in point: his latest hit, the Apple TV+ series Your Friends and Neighbors. Hamm stars as Andrew 'Coop' Cooper, a hedge fund manager who, after losing his job and torpedoing his career, turns to stealing from his wealthy friends and neighbours to keep up his lavish lifestyle. His loot of choice? High-priced, status symbol items – including some seriously coveted watches, like a Patek Philippe Nautilus with an ice-blue dial, which boasts a resale value of about US$169,000. Photo: Apple TV+ via AP Advertisement Life imitates art, as they say, and Hamm certainly seems to be mimicking Coop's passion for timepieces. Off-screen, Hamm has been spotted wearing a few steal-worthy timepieces of his own at red carpet events and media appearances. Here's a look at some of the best luxury watches Jon Hamm has been known to wear – presumably all acquired the old-fashioned way, with a receipt and/or full consent. Vacheron Constantin Historique 222 The Vacheron Constantin Historique 222. Photo: Handout The actor sparked serious buzz among watch lovers earlier this year when he showed up at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party wearing a yellow-gold Vacheron Constantin 222, which GQ referred to as the 'big, bold bad boy of high-end sports watches'. One of the most sought-after reissues in recent memory, it oozes the vintage charm of the original 222, which was introduced in 1977 to celebrate Vacheron's 222nd anniversary. After it was discontinued in the mid-80s, it became a rare collector's grail. The modern version, relaunched in 2022 as the Historiques 222, pays faithful tribute to the original, right down to the 37mm case and integrated bracelet – though it now houses a modern in-house movement. With its throwback styling and quietly confident presence, it's no surprise the piece looks right at home on the wrist of the man who played super-slick ad exec Don Draper in Mad Men. Meet George and Amal Clooney's glamorous niece, Mia Hamiyeh: she was a flower girl at the Clooneys' 2014 wedding in Venice and has since joined the couple on red carpets wearing Giambattista Valli
George Clooney and his wife Amal are no strangers to life in the limelight. But when the celebrity couple hit New York for the Clooney Foundation for Justice's The Albies in October, someone else stole the show. That person was Mia Hamiyeh, Clooney's niece. Standing almost as tall as her aunt, the young woman, who turns 23 this year, made a glamorous appearance in a red dress with a sweetheart neckline, silver heels and a gold clutch – and was almost unrecognisable from the first time she appeared in public. Back in 2015, when she was only 13, Hamiyeh joined the Clooneys on the red carpet for the premiere of Tomorrowland wearing Giambattista Valli, flats and braces on her teeth. That cheerful little girl is now following in her aunt's footsteps, working as a legal intern at the Clooney Foundation for Justice. So, what else do we know about Mia Hamiyeh? Who are her parents? Mia Hamiyeh's mum, Tala Alamuddin, is Amal Clooney's sister. She has three siblings – twins Jad and Sari Hamiyeh, and another brother whose name has not been disclosed. Alamuddin married Italian businessman Nico Le Tallec after her split from Hamiyeh. What are her educational qualifications? Mia Hamiyeh is training to be a lawyer.
